Something to get my adrenaline going, but outside of the traditional jock jams catalogue.

Can, Neu, (I imagine Hallogallo is entirely perfect for this) more or less any krautrock that has a steady beat I guess.

I've been running 5/6 times a week for 11 years with a walkman/ discman / ipod, and the only truth i've found is: run to whatever keeps your interest. southern hip hop's good just cos of the pure hookiness (right now I'd go killer mike / weezy / ugk, but not outkast), singer / songwritery stuff is good cos the pauses somehow create a mood (andrew bird, the verlaines, but not nick cave). melodic house / space disco is generally amazing (prins, adultnapper, many RA mixes, but not Basement Jaxx). what i wouldn't recommend is stuff that's designed to be "pumped up." Running gives you an hour or so to explore stuff you normally wouldn't spend an hour or so with in normal distracted mode. Cherish your music choices for that reason.

I find it very difficult to choose music for the gym. I used to have a gym playlist but many of the songs would bore me after only one play and anyway it got wiped out in my big iPod disaster anyway, through no fault of my own.

I must begin to turn my attention now to compiling things specifically for the gym again, for this week I just kinda coasted on whatever came to my mind at the time and I wanted things to be more planned and thought out for my workouts.

Big up in my workout music-playing options will always be:
1. Northside - Chicken Rhythms (I never really get tired of this record even after 17 years...I have no idea how to explain the way this sounds to the kids nowadays...do the words baggy or jangly mean anything to them? Notice I didn't say pop - a word I try to stay away from, but in their case...they were fucking perfection in that department)
2. Life Without Buildings - Any Other City (They came, they went...they left a classic album, the end, period.)
3. Almost anything by LCD Soundsystem. In fact, an awful lot of LCD Soundsystem has helped my workouts immeasurably! I think I'd say they're the kings of my workouts pretty much. I haven't yet tried the 45:33 thing at the gym, though. I tried it at home and I couldn't keep exercising for the whole thing. I do think there are some boring bits of that, I hate to say.
