the more local the better. like, down the street local. there are local artists threads, but i want a fresh one. your friends count too!

i love love LOVE local Oak Bluffs native Nina Violet. I need to get her new album cuz i keep listening to all her myspace songs over and over. i think she could be huge for real. i don't know how you get huge these days, but, whatever, i love her voice. she has even toured a bit in the u.k. maybe you saw her! she has toured with local boy made good willy mason too as part of his band and opening for him. i think. (but i dig her a bunch more than him. shhhhh, don't tell.)

anyway, if you like alt/oldetyme/folk-ish/americana stuff with lovely vocals and great songs and cellos and fiddles and banjos and stuff you might dig her:

OH AND POST SOME OF YOUR OWN NEW MUSIC TOO IF YOU HAVE ANY TO SHARE. YOU ARE LOCAL TOO.

Not so much local music but local-ish zine - this guy: http://only-in-it-for-the-music.blogspot.com/2008/05/excuse-or-notice-you-decide.html
is doing a cool hardcore punk zine called Distort Hackney, mainly what I would call "noisecore" but when I started a thread about it, seems like everyone else thinks that's something different.

I wanna hear this band the Wankys that's in it, supposed to be a total Confuse-style noise punk assault. Name obviously a homage to the Swankys!

lots of chicago bands i like but most of them are bros so i feel weird about repping for them. um aleks and the drummer are releasing their dave sitek-produced EP today, those guys are crazy ... organ + drums playing crazy polish gipsy rock music. killer whales have been pretty amazing the couple of times i've seen them live, james chancey polyrhythmic no wave type stuff with two drummers and fretless bass, kind of intimidated by them.

I was thinking about starting a thread wondering if anyone else had heard/dug the Crystal Antlers myspace.com/crystalantlers

Sort of a woozy Comets on Fire/Blue Cheer thing.

the people down the street from me have a web radio station that seems to be respected and written up. it's not exactly to my taste but i love having people in the neighborhood pushing ambient soundscapes and no-hope singer songwriters and also playing t-rex http://www.hollowearthradio.com/

First impression: I like their playlist, Jergins. Thx for the link/recommendation.

In Brooklyn, these guys:

http://blankdogs.blogspot.com

Also, most everything on Sacred Bones: http://www.myspace.com/sacredbonesrecords

Great thing about the Blank Dogs site is that you can download everything they've got. I'd start with the "Diana the Herald" 12". They ask for a donation. Be cool—make one.

Their "leaving the light on" vid is on you tube. hunt it down.

Other Sacred Bones bands: Pink Noise, Factums, Dead Luke, Nice Face. All worth your time.

and am I genuinely excited: well, yeah! I first found her peculiar way of singing out of tune (?) verrrrry annoying, but after a while, hearing the singles on local radio over and over again, I started to hear the songs and it somehow all clicked.

I've been getting into Isabel Reidy's band, Izzy True, of late:

Also, Sarah Hennies (the woman in the red shirt in the video below) is a really versatile and adventurous percussionist and has been playing some really exciting experimental shows this past year:
