So this ATP NY 2008 thing...

A few questions:

1. Was the "first batch of tickets" sold like 15 tickets total? The first batch literally sold out in around 5 minutes, but the second batch has been on sale for a month and has yet to sell out. I know there's only around 3000 tickets total, so...

2. Has ATP ever come to the states ever since that one time in LA in 2003? May be a stupid question, but I don't normally pay attention to this type of thing.

3. Any word on who the yet-to-be-announced bands might be? I'm really hoping for some quality groups, as I hate quite a few of the ones already announced. (My girlfriend is making me take her -- I DO really like Om, Harmonia, Shellac, Polvo etc. though)

4. Anyone on here going?

Reatards Unite, Saturday, 7 June 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

First batch included a room in the country club on-site. Second batch is offsite and you still need 2 to 3 friends to go in on it because tickets only come in groups of 3 or 4.

ie, not as cool and you have to have three friends ready to pony up $400, which some of my friends are having trouble doing right now.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 7 June 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

I have a pair of tickets, but have yet to secure hotel/flight/etc. I think the last time ATP came to the US was in 2004. Could be wrong though. No idea on yet to be announced bands (though I do have a wishlist, of course).

stephen, Saturday, 7 June 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Wow, the finishing adds to the lineup are pretty un-fucking-spectacular. Suggestions on how to get rid of my ticket? I think it's the type of deal where you have to show ID that matches up with the name of the person who bought the ticket. I honestly thought it would be a "here-are-the-last-few-tricks-up-our-sleeves" kind of release for the last groups, but Bob Mould? Bardo Pond playing their "classic" album? Give me a fucking break.

Overall probably the worst ATP lineup yet.

Reatards Unite, Thursday, 3 July 2008 06:21 (sixteen years ago)

WTF with ATP's obsession with Alexander Tucker??

gnarly sceptre, Thursday, 3 July 2008 09:44 (sixteen years ago)

He's on their label- PAYOLA!

Neil S, Thursday, 3 July 2008 09:53 (sixteen years ago)

fuck atp and their IT'S ABOUT TO SELL OUT bullshit
the routine's getting old guys.

tpp, Thursday, 3 July 2008 09:59 (sixteen years ago)

they're not the last adds!, y'all. just some adds, put out at the same time as ticket detail. kevin's done a lot of stuff with a lot of groups, but they aren't as well connected as some groups (cf dirty three, who were kind of perfect curators). i'm sure there'll be more hot groups though.

schlump, Thursday, 3 July 2008 12:12 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know...they originally said there would be 30 acts, and they're up to 31 now. It's probably pretty final. And either way it pretty much sucks.

Reatards Unite, Thursday, 3 July 2008 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

Has ATP ever come to the states ever since that one time in LA in 2003?

ATP has been in the US three times before. Once in 2001 (Sonic Youth curated), 2003 (Matt Groening), and 2004 (Modest Mouse)

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 3 July 2008 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Has Harmonia played other shows recently?

mizzell, Thursday, 3 July 2008 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, the finishing adds to the lineup are pretty un-fucking-spectacular.

Sonic Boom does a great show these days, I've seen him twice in the past year and he's great. Les Savy Fav, while not my thing musically, are guaranteed to be entertaining in the live setting. Bob Mould is, well, okay, not too sure about that add. But c'mon, Bardo Pond performing Lapsed? Fuck me, that's gonna be fucking amazing.

stephen, Thursday, 3 July 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

rrr, i saw spectrum supporting the valentines. it was so budged spacemen 3; he's even got this imitation jason guy playing sub-jason-tremolo guitar, instead of sub-staples-style-guitar, which is what it was all about. just kind of ploddy spacemen 3 hits without the edge or punctuation.

schlump, Saturday, 5 July 2008 10:05 (sixteen years ago)

he's even got this imitation jason guy playing sub-jason-tremolo guitar

well, can't say he had this guy when i saw him. that's new. and sort of lame, it sounds like.

stephen, Saturday, 5 July 2008 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

oh, and when i saw him the only S3 song he played was "Transparent Radiation" -- the rest was Spectrum/Sonic Boom stuff, plus a Kraftwerk "Hall of Mirrors" cover, which was awesome.

stephen, Saturday, 5 July 2008 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

BARDO POND PERFORMING LAPSED

DO WANT.

I have no idea how to plan this -- it sounds like the on-site hotel would be the way to go unless I rent a car?

Leee, Sunday, 6 July 2008 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

gemma hayes?! lol?
doesn't it seem like atp haven't listened to any new music since about 2004?
HEY, THE KIDS WENT CRAZY FOR THAT SHIT LAST YEAR, LET'S GET 'EM AGAIN!
atp line-ups are getting way predictable.

horses, Monday, 7 July 2008 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

well, can't say he had this guy when i saw him. that's new. and sort of lame, it sounds like.

yeah. i was gonna say that if you've seen him on his lonesome it might be a whole other thing, him getting lost in drones. but it was really bad. apparently there's something on the internet where he talks about putting his new group together, and how the bass player couldn't play bass. his bass player can't play bass, but does an unnecessary bootsy stomp while playing three notes of revolution bassline.

but yeh, maybe it'll be good if it's just him.

schlump, Monday, 7 July 2008 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

atp line-ups are getting way predictable.

yeah, but they also hardly ever make it to the US. so i'm happy it's at least on our half of the world, for once.

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Brian Jonestown Massacre, Lightning Bolt, and Robin Guthrie added with a couple acts yet to be announced. I wish MBV had picked some acts out of the shoegazer realm...

Reatards Unite, Monday, 28 July 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

Patton Oswalt!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 28 July 2008 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

Robin Guthrie! holy fucking shit

stephen, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

I wish MBV had picked some acts out of the shoegazer realm...

Are you nuts? Kevin Shields has always hated the tag.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 02:52 (sixteen years ago)

Doesn't matter whether he does or not...

Lilys
Yo La Tengo
Mercury Rev
Mogwai
Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins)
Brian Jonestown Massacre

--- all have shoegazer elements in their music, and some of the other acts (Spektrum, etc.) have a similar sound. It's not necessarily a bad lineup, but about halfway through the day I'm probably going to be wishing there were some acts with a completely different style playing.

Saturday's lineup is pretty awesome though.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

OK are there any of you who need or would like to split a room or a batch of tickets???

Leee, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

is anyone still looking for a room for this? me and a friend are either looking to find someone to sleep/cook/clean in our room, or looking for someone else's room to accommodate us. x

schlump, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

my girlfriend and i already have accommodations set up...

so, who else on ILM is going to this thing, for sure?

stephen, Friday, 29 August 2008 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

me!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 29 August 2008 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

are we gonna have an ILX meet up? :)

who else??

two weeks pass...

WFMU is pleased to announce that the station will be broadcasting and streaming live from the huge All Tomorrow's Parties festival (curated by My Bloody Valentine) up at Kutsher's Resort near Monticello, New York. As of now, WFMU will be live Saturday and Sunday (September 20/21) at the site, On board: Yo La Tengo, Polvo, Dinosaur Jr., Growing, Harmonia, Om, Mercury Rev, Lightning Bolt, Bob Mould, Low, Wooden Shjips, Silver Mt. Zion, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spectrum, and more!

Before MBV fans get too worked up, we should mention that our broadcast permissions have all been given subject to the bands' approvals and some are still pending/in channels of communication. But as you can see above, we've worked out things with a mighty healthy chunk of the weekend's unbelievable roster. We're still hammering away on this and making preparations for a dual-stage broadcast; news may change day to day, so please stay tuned to our site and airwaves for listings of exact set times we'll be able to carry. The festival, by the way, was rumored to be sold out, but as of today is not, so please check in with ATP for more info:

I'm still glad to be seeing this in person (and coming from Texas to do so), but the live broadcast makes it seem a bit less "exclusive," so to speak.

It's sold out, so why not broadcast? They did it for Terrastock 6 and I thought it was one of the cooler things they did.

Man, I completely forgot Low were on this bill -- after what happened the other day at the UK festival I'm really wondering now!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 September 2008 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

w'happened? is Alan OK?

don't worry, in-person attendees will be shown the secret handshake so you will still be cool on monday

Edward III, Thursday, 18 September 2008 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

Anyone know if it's video streaming or just audio?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 18 September 2008 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

seen nothing about a video feed.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 18 September 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Oh shit, now that there's an audio feed, I'm staying home! That's completely equivalent to attending!

All I know is that Alan hurled his guitar into the audience at the end of the set.

Low: Classic or classic?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 September 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

Uh, word to pass on from Windy and Carl here:

this is an emergency. please pass on to Everyone you know who may be at all tomorrow's parties in new york right now. this is important public health information that must be shared and immediately acted upon.

PLEASE Share with all mailing lists.....

the hotel at the venue - Kutschers - has BED BUGS. i repeat - BED BUGS.

go into your hotel room, remove the headboard from the wall and look for black dots and Moving things.......

look under your mattress, look at the sheets and under the sheets - look for tiny blood spots, tiny dark spots of dried blood.

bed bugs WILL go home with you.... they will get in your luggage and on your clothes, you will take them home and they wil infest your home......they are near impossible to get rid of.

bed bugs will bite you and suck your blood. they itch, they hurt, you cannot get rid of them. you DO NOT want to take them home.

please tell everyone you know who may be at ATP in new york this weekend to demand they get a new hotel room at a new hotel - do not stay onsite at Kutschers because you will get bitten and you will take them home.

if you have no other option but to stay there, every bit of clothing and bedding you take home with you MUST be placed in a freezer for at least 24 hours, and or must be washed reapetedly in very hot water.......4 or 5 times at least. there is no other way to kill these insects - YOU DO NOT WANT THEM IN YOUR HOME. and your car will need to be professionally cleaned.

please spread the word..............post on all mailing lists.......please!!!!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 September 2008 02:56 (sixteen years ago)

my parents went to atp, and i all i got were these lousy bed bugs.

Creeztophair, Saturday, 20 September 2008 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

Holy shit, bed bugs. I was aiming for Kutsher's before it sold out quickly, but I'm very glad to be staying at the Raleigh at this point. That is fucking ridiculous and very gross.

ilxor, Saturday, 20 September 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

Also, a bit of gossip from Steve Albini's poker table: Last night around midnight, Ryan Pfork discussing the new Sigur Ros album during the poker game, eating a pot brownie, and eventually losing all his chips and leaving the table. Also at the table: Jason, lead singer of Trail of Dead.

ilxor, Saturday, 20 September 2008 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

Matronly warnings about bed bugs are the 'don't eat the brown acid' of the ATP generation obv.

sonofstan, Saturday, 20 September 2008 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

thanks for that great bit of gossip 'ilxor'

Mohammed Butt (max), Saturday, 20 September 2008 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

That gossip is going to spread and overwhelm the whole nation by monday evening, mark my words.

Z S, Saturday, 20 September 2008 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

Growing are fuckin killing it.

Creeztophair, Saturday, 20 September 2008 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

Really? My girlfriend and I didn't really get into Growing earlier today. I personally liked them better in their Kranky days, the new stuff isn't nearly as engaging.

Highlights of day one: Bardo Pond and the comedy lineup, which was very solid.

Highlights of day two, so far: Alexander Tucker, Fuck Buttons (too loud though!) and Harmonia.

Overrated: Apse.

Looking forward to: Low especially. But several other things as well.

Currently drinking: Amaretto and red wine. Separately.

ilxor, Saturday, 20 September 2008 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

I have also decided, upon seeing five minutes of their show last night, that Built to Spill sounds like Death Cab for Cutie after going through puberty.

ilxor, Saturday, 20 September 2008 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

i'm recording some of the sets and putting them on my blog.
http://radicalriffage.blogspot.com

i think i'm going to stop for a while after om. i'm getting bored of sitting at my computer.

Creeztophair, Saturday, 20 September 2008 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

oh, i should mention that you can hear some mouse clicks around the start of growing's set, cause i was trying to figure out how to shut them off. and wfmu had a problem with their stream in the middle of harmonia's set, and cut to a beastie boys song for a few minutes. i edited that part out.

Creeztophair, Saturday, 20 September 2008 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

Pretty good Low set last night, a bit downbeat though, even for Low. Alan seemed in good spirits, made fun of the crowd of "white people," and said that half the guys "probably couldn't lift their arms over their heads." No guitar antics, either. Almost all recent material, a lot of stuff from Trust, a couple from The Great Destroyer, maybe one old song but I don't remember.

Shellac was very good, and very loud. Lots of banter between the guys and the crowd, Bob Weston taking questions between songs. "Big Black or Mission of Burma? Hmmm... Steve, I think I'd have to say Mission of Burma on that one."

Kevin Shields was standing in the aisle during Shellac, toward the back. After the set I said a quick "hi, thanks for putting together and playing this event," he said thanks for coming out, we shook hands and that was that. Seemed genuine though. So that was cool.

Skipped on Lightning Bolt, not a fan.

Thoughts forthcoming on today's lineup at some point. This has been fun so far.

ilxor, Sunday, 21 September 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

lightning bolt's set was full of great new songs.
can't wait for the new album.

Creeztophair, Monday, 22 September 2008 03:30 (sixteen years ago)

Elvis, I thought you were going to this. How'd you like it?

ilxor, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

they sounded amazing for the couple of seconds without earplugs i withstood, but sorry, i'm not gonna sacrifice that much of my hearing for any band, let alone them. and with the earplugs in, i lost a lot of midrange (with the aid of some low-mixed/disinterested singing) on a good number of songs. so the show, while certainly awesome in parts, also kind of sucked at the same time, evening things out to i'm glad i saw them, but it wasn't super-memorable. that dude's quite a drummer, yeah?

gabbneb, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 04:42 (sixteen years ago)

Colm? Quite a drummer, indeed. He was killer on pretty much every song from Isn't Anything. The names of which I cannot remember. Blame it on the wine.

ilxor, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 07:03 (sixteen years ago)

Elvis, I thought you were going to this. How'd you like it?

I took an early pass on this. Would rather see MBV in a non-festival setting (and will do so when they get to LA next week)

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 08:06 (sixteen years ago)

How big is the LA theater, anyway? The ATP venue was 3,000 capacity with great sightlines, better sound and (not to cop Pitchfork's festival review, because I had this thought while at the festival) a very David Lynch-esque atmosphere. Totally awesome.

ilxor, Thursday, 25 September 2008 02:19 (sixteen years ago)
