I recently came to the realization that Ante Up is my all time favorite hip-hop song. If one were to put together a whole mix of hip hop songs with a similar style, what would be included? Going for the overall vibe, not just music from a certain time or geography, or songs with similar lyrical themes.

Not quite the same type of thing, but I recently realized that the beat to Beyonce's "Freakum Dress" has a similar level of hypeness.

Damn, I forgot about "Stomp the Shit Out Ya". That was my hardcore shit for a sec. "I'm quick to bloody a crip and cripple a blood"

hooray for teflon & remy martin. particularly like the part where they play 2 secs of "nautilus" during remy martin's verse: "wish i could bring pun back ..."
video is ... interesting.

The video is the one with the proto-"Party Like A Rock Star" vibe, yes? And some Suicide Girl writing "MOP" in lipstick on a mirror?

yeah, sort of like the promoter booked them to open for limp bizkit or something. except they don't seem to meet much resistance from the crowd (and why would they, IRL?) so it sort of undercuts the idea. a real half-assed attempt at one of the oldest gags in the book.
great for the panoply of bad rap-rock fashion, though

maybe the theme was "MOP @ SXSW"

this is a weird thread. like, has the person already bought every MOP album or are they looking for MOP-like songs only by other artists for some reason?
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)
pretty sure it was somebody's sock tbh
― Y Kant Torres Red (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)
to be fair, it is the best beat
― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)
makeitpop was always kinda suspect but was there ever any strong evidence that it was a sock?
the MOP/Styles P. song "Bang Time" that was on albums they both put out in 2009/2010 is pretty killer btw
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)
entirely valid thread, Ante Up has such ferocity and rhetorical dynamite in its delivery
― acoleuthic, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)
It is an excellent driving song.

Got nothing but love for "Ante Up", was just saying that if somebody round here didn't invent makeitstop then they should've done.
