Which is the best Style Council single?

seeing as the thread about them has been revived recently.....
I have no idea how this one will turn out. As yet, I am even unsure how I will vote myself. Both of these things are rare for the singles polls I have seen so far.

I don't actually remember Money Go Round, Soul Deep or Life At A Top People's Health Farm.

At the moment I am torn between Shout to the Top!, Wanted and Promised Land.

I'm torn between "My Ever Changing Moods", "You're the Best Thing", "Shout to the Top!" and "Walls Come Tumbling Down".

"Speak like a child" in a second. Personal reasons.

Mark G, Monday, 9 June 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

'Money-Go-Round', but only because 'Headstart For Happiness' wasn't a single, I guess.

SeekAltRoute, Monday, 9 June 2008 11:31 (seventeen years ago)

"My Ever Changing Moods" was rather ace. Also like "Long Hot Summer" though.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 9 June 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago)

"My Ever Changing Moods" in a second. Personal reasons. But the A Paris EP (all four tracks of it, including "Long Hot Summer") comes a close second.

there's much greatness here but i'm going for "long hot summer".

grimly fiendish, Monday, 9 June 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

I really want to vote "Milton Keynes" here but in good conscience I can't. But then nobody else might, so maybe I can.

I blame this thread for making Long Hot Summer go round in my head all day (and I'm going to play it again in a minute here). I really should have voted for that because it was the song that got me into Style Council in the first place, really (I'm forever in debt to Grimly!). But instead I voted for "Wanted" because I know no one else will. I think that song is charming in that it's about some poor guy who just can't find the courage to talk to girls and yet Weller is this mega famous rock star! Haha...but I like the music on that as well. Excellent song to play at the gym, I've found.

"My Ever-Changing Moods" and "You're The Best Thing" could turn into standards.

I'm waiting for Diddy or someone to sample the chorus to "You're The Best Thing".

I think I'm going to make "You're The Best Thing" my wedding-dance song.

Eazy, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

Was "Boy Who Cried Wolf" a single? I know there's a video.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

Looking through my box set booklet, I can't see any evidence for that as a single release, no.

Bimble, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

But instead I voted for "Wanted" because I know no one else will

Bimble, I am considering voting for it for the very reasons you mentioned! And also the fact that it opens with the lines "There's a girl in my office who keeps on stopping, right in front of my eyes" and the way D.C. Lee contributes the "why, oh" on the backing vox.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 08:41 (seventeen years ago)

'Soul Deep' was the Council Collective thing with Jimmy Ruffin and those cats. Doesn't count.

I have most of these on 7" and love them bad. 'Speak Like A Child', then, by the width of a wispy Tracie backing vocal.

I remember one smash hits annual had PWeller's orig a4 page of the first draft of the lyrics for "speak like a child"

the fade out had:
"the way you hate the homely rank and the file..
I really like it when you speak like A child
you belong to no one, you have no..."

that last line remained uncompleted and unused.

Bah! So predictable.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 June 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

Sometime gotta do "Have You Ever Had It Blue?" vs. "Absolute Beginners".

Eazy, Sunday, 15 June 2008 06:44 (seventeen years ago)

thought speak like a child would run away with this. shocked.
