its 'coca cola', for every single reason discussed on the other thread incl those proffered by the naysayers - coca-cola is the more recognizable taste, & cherry cola tastes far more like ass than champagne.

and more importantly, the poetry of the phrase is pretty obviously the entire point of it, from the narrator's perspective.

You'd have to be pretty drunk to think that either Coca Cola or cherry cola tasted like champagne. Or used to pretty bad champagne.

Cherry cola is a more intriguing visual because (excepting 1985) Coca Cola has exactly ONE taste.

Cherry cola can taste like anything from a regal spark of Dr. Browns Black Cherry, to the familiar sting of a Cherry Coke, to the candy tartness of a 99-cent Faygo, or the super-sweet corn-syrup pooling in the bootom of a beachside fountain drink. The listener has the freedom to project on to the song whichever flavor of Cherry Cola they have the fondest memories of.

Actually depending on which bottling company bottles the soda, Coke can taste quite different. i live in Texas & visit friends in California. The difference is very noticable.

Bonus points to the BBC censors for making the song dirtier. Changing the lyric from Coca to Cherry adds a sexual connotation that fits nicely with the never been kissed perspective of the narrator.
