POLL: Best Track on Tom Waits' "Rain Dogs"

Second of the Frank albums (and I would say the best one, overall). I really do think "Downtown Train" is the most immortal track on here, so that's mine. If that weren't there, it would be between "Hang Down Your Head", "Tango Till They're Sore", or "Time".

dog latin, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

even though it's my favourite by tom, i was never keen on the run between midtown and walking spanish.

"Jockey," the title track, "Walking Spanish" and "Gun Street Girl" are all really strong candidates for me. The bass on "Walking Spanish" is fantastic.

oh yeah, good call.

Jordan, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

Cemetery Polka for the lyrics, but it's a close call between about 8 others.

"Time", I dig a bit of maudlin.

i tend to pull out swordfishtrombones more often but the songwriting on this one is unfuckwitable

deej, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

ya the Waits albums I listen to most would be this one and Real Gone I think.

wilter, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

a college friend introduced me to tom waits by playing "time" over and over. love this album, love that song.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'm surprised that song hasn't been covered a shitload of times.

wilter, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

"jockey full of bourbon"

latebloomer, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

jockey full of bourbon sounds like the theme tune from black books - or should that be the other way round?

dog latin, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

'singapore' is another great one, forgot that

saw him do that live a year or two ago

deej, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

i like the way he pronounces "hatters-here!" in that song.

Top 3 predictable...

Anyone else seeing Mr Waits on his current tour?

stephen, Sunday, 22 June 2008 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

I'm seeing him in Atlanta (second row pit!!!), but based on the setlists--and 2006's as well--it seems he's not playing Jockey Full of Bourbon much anymore

Malcolm Money, Sunday, 22 June 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

yeah bummer, he'll only play 20-25 other BRILLIANT songs instead, huh? ;)

stephen, Sunday, 22 June 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

"Gun Street Girl" is perfect Saturday clean-your-house music.
