^^^i have that album, its pretty good but i havent come back to it a lot ... not saying thats necessarily cuz of quality, more out of my laziness
― deej, Thursday, 12 June 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)
anyone hear the new album?
― truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)
Yup, NPR was streaming it for a couple weeks, I played it twice. Not bad, not thrilling. Peaks on the first track (which I understand is now the theme song for some TV show I've not seen yet).

yeah that song is amazing
― truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)
I liked his first album better -- it wasn't a straightforward of a '60s Stax/Motown blue-eyed soul throwback, had a bit more of the "Stones Throw vibe" whereas this new one may as well be on [insert random record label here].
― more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
it wasn't as straightforward...
daptone isn't really that random

My yoga teacher has been playing "I Need a Dollar" in class for the last few months, and I had no idea until now that it was contemporary!

Freelancer Sarah Godfrey says in part:
Anyone who doesn’t yet know that Blacc is the future of soul music will come to that realization soon: He’s the unsung creative force behind Swedish EDM producer Avicii’s 2013 monster hit “Wake Me Up”; his platinum single “The Man” can be heard in a Beats by Dre commercial; and he has served as a mentor on the NBC singing competition show “The Voice.” Blacc, formerly signed to legendary underground label Stones Throw, releases his first major-label studio album, “Lift Your Spirit,” this week. He calls its sound “folk soul,” and of his many sonic experiments over the years, his artful blend of these two styles seems to be what will finally launch him from underground favorite to commercial success.

"future of soul music"
"underground favorite"
― dyl, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 16:19 (twelve years ago)
That "future" line clearly stands out (and because of the ol' Springsteen one, is hard to take seriously). I haven't heard this yet
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 16:52 (twelve years ago)
Finally listened to this--it's uneven. I like his Bill Withers like vocals, but the melodies aren't varied enough and too often the rhythms are kinda predictable, but other cuts do work. I need to listen to it some more
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 17:08 (twelve years ago)
eww people here liked "I Need A Dollar"?

Hey folks, its his "breakout year"
2014 is different, that it is the breakout year for black artists such as Beyonce, Aloe Blacc and Pharrell. But in each case, these artists have broken out despite pop radio, not because of it. Aloe Blacc used television commercial licensing, Pharrell dominated YouTube and Europe, and Beyonce won the PR and marketing wars, all creating their own hits and buzz.

― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:23 (twelve years ago)
that avicii song is just, the worst thing I am aware of hearing in the past ~5 years, just, a shit-heap of different kinds of mediocrity offered up as one abysmal, pandering package to awful people
― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:24 (twelve years ago)
i love "wake me up" and i think "i'm the man" is pretty good as well
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:25 (twelve years ago)
he should be shot for taking part, unless he was actually forced to take part at gunpoint, in which case he should have chosen to be shot rather than taking part
― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:26 (twelve years ago)
I pretty much did a 180 on "Wake Me Up". Kinda love it now, mostly due to Aloe Blacc. "The Man" is just whatever. I feel no type of way about it.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:29 (twelve years ago)
it's hard for me to separate my tolerance of "the man" with the little bit of the elton john melody he snips, which is perfect on its own
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:32 (twelve years ago)
ehh yeah, that's the best part of it, which isn't saying a lot
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:37 (twelve years ago)
it's pretty admirably bizarre that one of the biggest pop hits in recent memory is a country song made by a Swedish EDM producer, a former Stones Throw rapper and the guitarist from Incubus. almost makes me want to like "Wake Me Up," but i don't.
― some dude, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:42 (twelve years ago)
ha, I didn't even know about Incubus dude's involvement, didn't their guitarist used to be in the Roots?
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 21:45 (twelve years ago)
nah, their bassist, different guy.
