Is he a demented genious or just some talentless fat fuck with delusions of being Roky Erikson with the wrong drugs?

Evidence for greatness: "Never Relaxed," all of the terrifying _Hi How Are You_, his version of "I Saw Her Standing There" (which spins it as a heartbroken lonely slow one).

He's written far too many GRATE songs to be written off as some tame sideshow freak - 'Walking The Cow', 'The Beatles', 'King Kong' etc. etc.

1990 is very good, some things last a long time and devil town are heartbreaking...

oh, def. a classic. Search: well a lot of it, but especially Songs of Pain & Yip/Jump music-- two of the most affecting things i've ever heard (the cassettes just went up from $4 to $5 dollars). destroy: mary lou lord

Speeding Motorcycle deserves better treatment than she gave it.

King Kong, tho, is just tremendous.

Hi, How Are You, Yip/Jump Music and even Fun are all classicks. What Mary Lou Lordie Lord did with his songs was utter shit though.

nathalie, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I find "Fun" the least.

daniel is a classic nutjob. search the stress tapes (and his new one which features a grate [sic] pic of him at mcdonald's on the back). his alb w/ jad fair is good too. I haven't heard all of his stuff, but I've been a fan since I was fourteen and sold my alice in chains and primus to get 'hi, how are you'. my groop got to open for him last november, and I was excited to meet him. he wasn't in a very talkative mood, tho. he played a short, sweet set and drew a many-headed animal for me.

I remember listening to the one LP of his that I have (Fun, I think) and thinking it was much more "normal" sounding than I expected, but then he lets out this huge burp, and I couldn't help but wonder where the producer was.

His last name is Johnston, BTW.

nickn, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Classic.

nickn, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Fun" is the most "normal" but also with the worst & least affecting lyrics.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant to email you about this Sage but I might as well say it in public -- I loved your interview with Johnston on Pitchfork. Good stuff.

One the greatest songwriters of the past 20 years.....

Personal favourites are 1990 and Artistic Vice

not too keen on all the garage rock stuff he seems to churning out at the moment tho....
