Obviously it's a big area, but I'm thinking of stuff like Moondog, the Indo Jazz Fusion albums, 'Out To Lunch' by Eric Dolphy perhaps. Jazz which is fun to listen to without being kitschy or silly. Any more recommendations?

i was listening to jack teagarden the other night and my head almost exploded cuz there was so much joy and insane invention in what he was wrapping around some old warhorse of a tune and it made me want to grow my own and pass out pickles and dangle my shoes from wires.

i'm checking out some teagarden stuff on youtube but can't find much that features the trombone, mostly vocal stuff.

this is the best definition i've come across yet of the difference between dixieland and new orleans jazz:
What’s the difference between Dixieland and traditional New Orleans jazz? Chris Rose inadvertently helped define the difference in his interview with Leroy Jones when Jones told Rose, “I don’t play repertory.” Jones insists on playing the music with his own personality, and when he plays “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans,” he can make you forget that the song has been played before by countless others because for that moment onstage, the song is his.
Dixieland is music played by musicians who are consciously evoking the memory and arrangements of musicians from the past. Traditional New Orleans jazz is played by those musicians who are themselves part of an ongoing tradition. (JS)

Part of me wants to argue with that, but the other part of me is thinking about how painfully stiff guys like Dr. Michael White are and thinking that maybe Jones is right.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 13 June 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
I doubt MW would term himself dixieland, though, although I agree with you.
― Jordan, Friday, 13 June 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)
honestly i've only heard "dixieland" used as self-description by lame bands outside of new orleans.
― Jordan, Friday, 13 June 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)
i kinda hate the term.
Well yeah, especially what with the "dixie" part.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 13 June 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
But yeah I guess MW probably uses "trad jazz" or something like that?
yup.
