TS: "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts vs. "Summer Breeze" by The Isley Brothers

I'm not sure how to pick one of these versions myself, tbh. Seems like the Isleys are a little more summery, and Seals and Crofts are a little more breezy, but in both versions the summer is linked inextricably with the breeze in a perfect covalent bond of 70's excellence. Waiter, bring me one of those drinks with a little umbrella in it.

good one!

I side with Seals and Crofts...(less vocally overwrought)...both are instant nostalgia trips...

Yeah, tough call. I voted Isleys.

I side with the Type O Negative cover of the Seals and Croft version.

Jackie Mittoo (the "keyboard king of Studio One") also rocked "Summer Breeze"...(he substituted "memories" for "jasmine")...

Yeah, I love Ernie Isley solos in general. Remembering hoping that thread about Ernie-ing was going to be about Ernie Isley.

On the subject of Isley Brothers soft rock covers, I heard their version of 'Fire and Rain' for the first time recently, it's amazing.

We really need to poll those, if we haven’t already, which is something I was thinking earlier.

Because “Love the One You’re With” is also grebt.

Was fairly interesting that funking up singer-songwriter shit was their whole thing for a year or two… don't necessarily see what market forces, which the Isleys were consistently responsive to, inspired this move…like, did Bill Withers show them an otherwise untapped market?

veronica moser, Friday, 7 February 2020 23:27 (six years ago)

what is the instrumentation on the Isleys' version intro? Mandolin?

lol there is a ~tiny~ bit of ernie-ing in that (grebt) solo

I don't have a direct quote on this, but iirc Ronald said it came from them being listeners and fans of all kinds of music. I imagine too that they recognized the potential of introducing proven hit songs to ears who may not necessarily have heard them before also played a part.
