From Mickey Kaus' blog/column...
Will Obama Kill Bling? Mary Battiata thinks maybe. ... Now that she mentions it, I kind of hope Obama's election will kill off much of hip-hop, at least the gangsta-inspired parts. But just killing off bling and gangsta fashion would be a start. ...
This just struck me as the type of declaration that would send ILM into a lather. Your thoughts?

People do dress like giant babies these days, but I don't think hip hop style is necessarily worse than anything else on the racks.
Also, lol @ well-to-do liberals moaning about "bling".
― Bodrick III, Sunday, 15 June 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
lol @ bling being outdated slang that whiteys use to simultaneously prove theyre down and to condescend

Sitting on the front porch of 67-year-old Willie Dorn, a retired corrections officer, Milloy noted the antics of a group of teenaged boys "shirtless, pants below their behinds," who, as Milloy and Dorn watched, launched a plastic bottle at a passing scooter, nearly causing an accident.
How many more scooters do we have to lose before we ban plastic bottles?

ah, sorry, didn't notice what that AMG link was at first. But anyway:
Review by Eugene Chadbourne
In the early years of the 21st century, rock critics could oft be heard moaning about the similarity of the way so many hit rock singles sound, how one sometimes can't even tell the records from the commercials on the radio. The uniform blandness of the average rock combo circa 2001 also extended to independent releases by bands that are not well-known outside of their local region, if that. This group is a collaboration involving singer and guitarist Mary Battiata and Karl Straub, a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and bandleader known mostly for his work with his band the Graverobbers. Here Straub keeps his mouth shut except for the odd backing vocal, leaving the singing chores to Battista, who is pleasantly piped indeed. When the band goes into a folk-rock or slightly country direction there seems to be at least a glimmer of personality in view, the light at the end of the tunnel as good old General William Westmoreland used to put it. Naturally a band wants to kick things off with a rocking number, though, and chances are the opening "Rocking Horse" is so generic that many listeners won't get past it.
lol

It makes sense if she's an alt.country musician, that she'd want other actually good genres to become equally emasculated anodyne versions of themselves as well.

oops shit, sorry i didn't realize i'd been beaten to it...
cosign with this, in these two pieces there's this current of "Obama - the kind of black guy who might serve as a ROLE MODEL!" that just pisses me the fuck off with its "our standards are the good ones" garbage
honestly I think some people hate on the sagging look because they can't pull it off & are jealous - I know if I wouldn't look ridiculous in 3XL, I would be rocking that look the fuck out, because it'd be really comfortable
I know my limits tho

Kaus is awful; I wish he weren't on Slate; I can't for the life of me figure out how someone like Mike Kinsley ever regarded him as an intellectual peer; and he has a longstanding habit of pissing me off with his terrible, paternalistic attitude toward black people, immigrants, and basically anyone he can imagine as a discrete culture. Really awful.
