"Absolute Beginners"

Thread ends.

i, grey, Sunday, 15 June 2008 07:11 (seventeen years ago)

wait a minute ... i am sure that there HAD to be a bowie single from "labyrinth"!

Eisbaer, Sunday, 15 June 2008 07:17 (seventeen years ago)

Hence the "some"!

Eazy, Sunday, 15 June 2008 07:33 (seventeen years ago)

I think that the Labyrinth single is probably the best one because it has the least amount of that 80's gloss. Unlike the video for "Absolute Beginners":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCL7kkn7MJQ
...8 minutes that summarises a lot of what went wrong with Bowie in the 80's: Davy "acting" at the start, breaking the fourth wall, etc., etc.. "That's Motivation" is much better and (intentionally for a change) hilarious.

for all that, though, "absolute beginners" is still the best of the lot.

"This Is Not America". These are the better three of his 80s movie singles though.

"Smack that baby, make it pee!"

This isn't even a contest : "Cat People (Putting Out the Fire)" EVERY TIME.

"Absolute Beginners" is unlistenable.

"Absolute Beginners". "Underground" from Labyrinth and "This Is Not America" are both great, though. Haven't heard the "Cat People" one

Here is the Cat People one, completely different from the version on Let's Dance.

Things I like about "Absolute Beginners":
-the unpredictible key changes and extra measures
-the horns throughout and the sax solo -- along with the background-singing guys, this song sounds like the full realization of the Let's Dance band.
-the harmony on "I absolutely love you."

But "This Is Not America" works so well in its own right as a winter pop song. (I feel like I've heard the instrumental part of this during sports-score highlights, or maybe it was on one of the cable channels that showed nothing but still ads for local businesses.)

And "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" was the creepiest thing I'd ever heard, the first time I heard it, especially first minute or two. And that it then goes on and on...

All three of these stand out and in some ways above other Bowie records from the 80s.

I may be the only person to prefer the Nile Rodgers re-recording of "Cat People." God, at least it omits the basso awfulness of Bowie's intro, and that tone-deaf shriek ("GAH-SO-L-E-E-E-E-E-N-E!!")
