He may have been in the shadow of Andy Partridge, but Moulding did actually write several of the best XTC songs, including a handful of singles. This poll is a tribute to one of the most underrated singer/songwriters ever.

It's gotta be "Grass" although I would like to rep for his "Nonsuch" output, which has gotten way too much verbal abuse. "The Smartest Monkeys", "My Bird Performs" and "War Dance" are all brilliant songs!

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 15 June 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

He wrote "Funk Pop a Roll"? Doesn't Partridge sing it?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 15 June 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

So much in the shadow of Andy Partridge that Geir doesn't know what he looks like

Tom D., Sunday, 15 June 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm. I followed an image link from Google, but I now see that is a young Andy Partridge.. Bummer...

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 15 June 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

This is actually very hard. "Wake Up", "English Roundabout", "What In The World??...", "My Bird Performs" and "The Smartest Monkeys" are all contenders IMO.

LOL GEIR :D

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Life Begins at the Hop. He wrote my favorite songs on Drums and Wires.

dan selzer, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Dan beat me to it

Tom D., Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

"That Is The Way" is one of XTC's worst songs, dude.

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

although "Life Begins At The Hop" is really really good, yeah

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

I don't remember "That Is the Way"! What's that on?

Tom D., Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

Ten Feet Tall for me.

MaresNest, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

"That Is The Way" is the really shitty boring one on Drums And Wires, it sticks out from the rest like a sore thumb

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

I've just realised how long it is since I've heard that album, this must be recitfied pronto

Tom D., Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm, just had a listen, hasn't aged as badly as it might. Still a pretty dull track although the post-chorus horns are nice. Put up against that album's highlight's it's a pretty nothingy song.

"Reel By Real" and "Complicated Game" are my favourite D&W tracks, they're fkn awesome.

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

I mean when it comes down to it I find Partridge's invective usually beats Moulding's whimsy.

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

I find it upsetting to look at the list and see all the good work undone by those last five pieces of shit that could have spat from Richard Digance's wrinkly old arse.

MaresNest, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

RUNAWAYS

Abbott, Sunday, 15 June 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Also why do we have "What in the World" as his only Dukes of the Stratosphear song?

Abbott, Sunday, 15 June 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

I love That is the Way.

dan selzer, Sunday, 15 June 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

I gotta go with "Crowded Room" -- and that's Andy in the picture, not Colin.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 15 June 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

Also why do we have "What in the World" as his only Dukes of the Stratosphear song?

The others are listed after the "Skylarking" numbers as they were released in 1987.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 15 June 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

o i c

Abbott, Sunday, 15 June 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

"Runaways" is really good too!

Voted for "English Roundabout" tho.

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

Funk Pop A Roll is Andy Partridge! The bloke in the picture.

Meeting Place

Zeno, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

btw I might have REALLY, GENUINELY voted for "Smokeless Zone" if Geir had woken up on the right side of bed this morning, it's fucking AWESOME

Just got offed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

"Making Plans for Nigel"

stephen, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

Everyone knows that I am a Colin Moulding whore.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

and that's Andy in the picture, not Colin.

Thank god someone pointed this out.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

SACRIFICIAL BONFIREEEEEEE

cutty, Monday, 16 June 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

generals & majors, totally pwned andy in the singles dept. for a brief time

velko, Monday, 16 June 2008 02:17 (seventeen years ago)

"BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN-GaaalOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW"

I hope this one gets a vote even if it's the worst.

"Standing In For Joe" is probably the best Moulding song that will get zero votes.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 16 June 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

Went for "Vanishing Girl"

Mark G, Monday, 16 June 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

"Ten Feet Tall".
And "That Is The Way" is a good song too.

zeus, Monday, 16 June 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

It's between "Hop", "Ten Feet Tall" and "The Meeting Place" for me

Tom D., Monday, 16 June 2008 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 23 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Thirteen tracks:

Ladies and Gentlemen and Majors: The best of Colin Moulding.

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 07:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'm glad I missed this - I'd never have been able to choose between: "I'll Set Myself On Fire", "Heatwave", "Cross Wires", "Ball And Chain", "Fly On The Wall" and "Do What You Do".

Stewart Osborne, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I didn't try to choose, either. I kinda wish "Officer Blue" from Rag & Bone Buffet had been included, though.

Bimble, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

The Affilated 0

:(

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

How did Bungalow get 0 votes?

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

that song is awful

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

That's where you're wrong. It's easily one of his best. Easily.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

"Ball and Chain" getting zero votes is kinda madness

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

agreed...WTF?

Joe, Thursday, 26 June 2008 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

A couple of years ago I remember vowing to make myself a compilation of only his songs. I can't understand now why I abandoned that project.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Thursday, 26 June 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

One vote for King For A Day? Oh man, ILM has seen better days.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Thursday, 26 June 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago)

King for a Day is awful. Well, not awful, but not great or good or anything.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 26 June 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

B-b-but I totally voted for "Dying!"

nabisco, Thursday, 26 June 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

Talking of forgotten projects, I once intended to edit together every XTC middle eight into one long file.

MaresNest, Thursday, 26 June 2008 08:44 (seventeen years ago)

I *did* once edit the intro to "No things in our house" for a PE style backing track jam.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 June 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

^^^Ballet For A Rainy Day ftw
