i love "one more try" a lot.

horseshoe, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, this was inspired by hearing "One More Try" on the drive home from Father's Day activities. He manages to sustain that intensity for six minutes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

oh, the 80's...the times when a synth keyboard and a drum machine was enough for playing a song. (see also "nothing compares to you")

Zeno, Monday, 16 June 2008 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

Wish I could vote for the Jam-Lewis remix of "Monkey."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 16 June 2008 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Kissing a Fool". Beautiful song and his best ever vocal performance.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

But fine for me if "One More Try" wins. That is the other one I would have picked here.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

"Monkey"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY_nw_otN1U&feature=related
...unfortunately the hat makes him look like he's auditioning for NKOTB. And does he really sing "spank the monkey" near the end?

snoball, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

Oooh you know you've gotta spank the monkey!
:)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

Did GMick ever actually realise that "Monkey" was a metapho for smack?

I mean, it seems plain, but.

Mark G, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

Well, that's what the song is about.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, but it just seemed like he nicked all the lines from every song about "monkeys on yr back" ever.

Mark G, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

father figure

Tracer Hand, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

why didn't george michael ever do a duet with madonna?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

I think a Madonna/George Michael killer house-y dance duet could be the single of 2009.

Eazy, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought that "Monkey" was intentionally written about heroin.

snoball, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought that it was about bestiality.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

PS: I voted for "One More Try," one of the very best vocal performances from anyone in the decade.

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

I can't think of anyone who can belt that song without turning into a whiner.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously such a good album.

kate78, Monday, 16 June 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

I like "Older" better. "Faith" is kind of patchy - great ballads, but too many of the faster songs are a bit too repetitive.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 June 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

gotta be "Father Figure"

jaime, Monday, 16 June 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

Good poll.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)

very good.

i LOVE Hand to Mouth, but i just automatically chose Faith

might regret it

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 29 February 2016 14:37 (ten years ago)

hah I was just coming here to say this is easily "One More Try". one of my favorite 80s pop albums.

I like the lesser known tracks like "Hard Day" and "Hand to Mouth" a lot too.

have grown sick of Father Figure cos I sing it at karaoke so often. not its fault.

"Monkey" always reminds me of "RELAX"

he doesn't even really do the pop vocal riffing at the end, he changes it to be more comfortable for his mid-crooner range. lame.

under-rated! and only an extra track on the CD (and the tape?).

piscesx, Monday, 29 February 2016 15:48 (ten years ago)

I always liked how George was a deftly talented vocalist that often minimized his full-voiced vocal acrobatics - granted he'd use them when the song called for it ("One More Try", the chorus of "Praying for Time", etc), but that hushed tone of his often suited the songs better.

How the hell did IWYS get no votes? The transition into the second part is all-time!

IWYS is #2 after "Kissing a Fool" imo

I'm actually glad that a point was made regarding GM meticulously programming up this record, because in my experience - his personal life aside - GM mostly tends to be talked about as a singer first, a songwriter second, and a musician third.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 6 August 2018 20:08 (seven years ago)

I mean, this is understandable - he had a great voice, and was rarely seen holding an instrument, but I often wonder how many people realise just how involved he was in the production/playing side of things.

"Hand to Mouth" kind of anticipated his later direction a bit, yeah?

the message song (well, one of them at least), breathy vocals, melancholy instrumentation.

it's not the best on this album but I enjoy it in that vein.

also what's up with the "Monkey" hate itt that song rules.

best moment on the album, however, is "C-C-C-C-C-C-COME ON"

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Friday, 16 February 2024 17:57 (two years ago)

weird that I didn't get this as a kid, cos I didn't listen to a ton of music then, but I loved all the George Michael and Wham singles. think I almost got it but got a lame Chicago album instead, so I didn't wind up hearing this til my 20s!

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Friday, 16 February 2024 17:57 (two years ago)

Hard Day. Was a single in some territories?

piscesx, Saturday, 17 February 2024 00:55 (two years ago)

I AM A LOVER

brimstead, Saturday, 17 February 2024 07:12 (two years ago)

the original mix of "hard day" was the b-side to the 12-inch versions of "i want your sex". the pettibone remix got released in its own right (on 12-inch only afaict) at around the same time as "faith" in the states, which brought it back to the dance/club chart and onto the r&b chart

dyl, Saturday, 17 February 2024 18:55 (two years ago)

Not going to vote in this poll, but Father Figure's lyrics are very creepy...

BriefCandles, Saturday, 17 February 2024 23:38 (two years ago)

it's ok the poll closed 15 years ago

dyl, Monday, 19 February 2024 02:13 (two years ago)

"Hard Day" got R&B airplay in fall '87, exactly the background he wanted to build to earn a #1 song on the R&B chart in a few months.
