Mars even though "Hairwaves" is the worst song on here. Gawd, each and every one of these people still look positively scary on the back cover. Even Arto.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 16 June 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

And check out the fantastic Optimo No Wave Mix if you haven't already here:

http://www.optimo.co.uk/nowave.htm

featuring great bands I've never heard (Blurt) or even heard of (Tools You Can Trust). And what's up with that neato Arto/Neto track?

I love me some Optimo!

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 16 June 2008 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

Contortions > Teenage Jesus > Mars > DNA

I wonder: Did that particular Contortions lineup record (and release) more than those three racks?

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 16 June 2008 05:19 (seventeen years ago)

...or tracks, for that matter?

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 16 June 2008 06:14 (seventeen years ago)

i think george scott got kicked out before the "buy" LP? dan selzer probably knows or check one of the recent no wave histories by thurston moore/byron coley or marc masters (I'm saving my pennies for these books).

perusing thurston & byron's book it looked like the musicians on NNY didn't think eno really "got" them.

the DNA 2.0 lineup w/Tim Wright is my absolute fave no wave unit.

m coleman, Monday, 16 June 2008 10:37 (seventeen years ago)

voting contortions

m coleman, Monday, 16 June 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)

DNA mark 2 was a fantastic band. Tim Wright really opened up the band's sound. I hear elements of funk, rn'b, blues, jazz, plus a lot of other sounds jammed in between Arto's scraping and squawking. It's too bad they didn't record more.

I don't really like the sound on No New York. The Contortions tracks in particular sound too dry. I'm not a technical person so I'm not sure that makes any sense.

leavethecapital, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:35 (seventeen years ago)

toughie, I'll get back to ya

I know, right?, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

yeah wtf
how come four years ago there was only one web site w/ a few photos and scanned handbills
now everyones dissertation is dropping at once

sanskrit, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

according to Marc Masters book, George Scott left right before or early on in the Buy sessions. Adele was gone by then as well.

For me, No New York is:

Mars>Contortions>DNA>Teenage Jesus

Actually, for me:

Helen Fordsdale>>>>>Every other song written in the history of mankind

dan selzer, Monday, 16 June 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

Mars wins

If this were a single track poll, Contortions' "Dish It Out" would win easily, tho

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

DNA all the way (hey, that rhymes!)

Alex in NYC, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Contortions > Teenage Jesus > Mars > DNA

^^^

absolutely.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

On NNY:

Mars > Contortions >DNA > Teenage Jesus

Generally:

DNA > Contortions > Mars > Teenage Jesus

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

mars win for "helen fordsdale" and "puerto rican ghost", and for having the best band name

r1o natsume, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

Generally:

DNA > Contortions > Mars > Teenage Jesus

This ^

stephen, Monday, 16 June 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

That too.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 16 June 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

i've heard more by dna, and i really like them; altough mars are cool as shite. James Chance gets the vote.

outdoor_miner, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

Mars >>>>>>>>>>>>>> DNA > Contortions > Teenage Jesus

No one in their right mind should actually consider Teenage Jesus better than Mars. At least not on record.

brightscreamer, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

now everyones dissertation is dropping at once

I know someone who's working on one right now. Maybe this means that more of the scene's films will crawl out of their cans. I've been dying to see She Had Her Gun All Ready for eons.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

did anyone see the teenage jesus reunion show?
how was it??

Zeno, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

james chance james chance james chance

G00blar, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

Mars on the record, but if I could pick one of these to see in their prime, James Chance.

dad a, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

I like Orphans better than any song by the other 3. Am not in right mind tho.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

There is a serious film about the No Wave cinema scene in the works now. I helped music supervise.

The Teenage Jesus reunion show was great. They were better then I expected they'd be, I mean how long has it been since Lydia held a guitar and played those songs? She kept berating Jim Sclavanus and Thurston for messing up, and yellng at the audience. It was a bit schticky, a bit silly. The real reason the show was great was the opening band, Information, who put on one of the best shows I've seen in ages.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)

A bunch of these have been screening in New York recently. Anthology Film Archives did a full James Nares retro. I wouldn't get too excited about She Had Her Gun All Ready or any of the others really.

"you know that thing you've been dying to see? i saw it, it's crap. don't bother."

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

More like "you know that thing you've been dying to see? It's only celebrated because of it's relative scarcity". I just don't think the films of Beth B. and Scott B. or whoever else are really going to get the No New York treatment.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

I like Orphans better than any song by the other 3.

I like Teenage Jesus just fine, but man...I have a really hard time ignoring the lyrics to that song. They strike me as grade school shocker. Have you heard 78+, DNA on DNA, or any James Chance music outside of No New York? I'm not trying to be a prick, I'm just having a hard time understanding how someone can like Teenage Jesus more than the other three bands on No New York.

brightscreamer, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

Have you heard 78+, DNA on DNA, or any James Chance music outside of No New York?
Yes to all of those. Orphans was the first TJ&TJ song I ever heard (on that Lydia Lunch Widowspeak comp). I don't really have a problem with grade school shocker lyrics though (isn't that quite common to No Wave anyway?)

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 08:29 (seventeen years ago)

"Red Alert" is the jam. I voted for DNA, though.

DLee, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

This actually seems like a good thread to ask for recommendations for books about No Wave...?

its a kirt not a skilt (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 10:57 (eleven years ago)

That's expensive.

I think there's some no wave talk in Rip It Up and Start Again, I don't remember.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 14:58 (eleven years ago)

as mentioned above many years ago, check out the movie Blank City as well. Also Downtown 81. Both tangentially related.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 14:59 (eleven years ago)

I just ordered this by patron request for the academic library I work at. I may want to check it out when the patron is done with it

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 15:00 (eleven years ago)

Blank City would be great if it wasn't for the five-second-soundbite style of editing, plus it's more focussed on the film side of things.

Position Position, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:46 (eleven years ago)

There's this thread: Please explain to me just what exactly No Wave is. And I'm just now realizing that I've lost most of the stuff I mentioned in that thread to some data crash or another over the past decade. But it's probably all much easier to find these days.
