How Could I Have Lived 23 Years Without Ever Knowing That The U.S. & U.K. Versions Of Virgins & Philistines are COMPLETELY different!!!???

I mean, really. WHAT THE FUCK???? This is one of my all-time favorite records of 1985. I've played it a THOUSAND times. COMPLETELY different!!!

LOOK:

UK LP version:

1. "Thinking Of You"
2. "Faint Hearts"
3. "Castles In The Air"
4. "Take"
5. "Cruel Circus"
6. "Hammond Song"
7. "Virgins And Philistines"
8. "Armchair Theatre"
9. "Yours Sincerely"
10. "Sorry"

North America LP version:

1. "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" (Linzer, Randell)
2. "Pushing Up The Daisies" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
3. "Faint Hearts" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
4. "Castles In The Air" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
5. "Take" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
6. "Thinking Of You" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
7. "The Colourfield" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
8. "Cruel Circus" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
9. "Hammond Song" (Margaret Roche)
10. "Your Love Was Smashing" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons, Karl Shale)
11. "Virgins And Philistines" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)
12. "Sorry" (Terry Hall, Toby Lyons)

Where the hell are "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" and "Pushing Up The Daisies" on the U.K. version????????

"Pushing Up The Daisies" is one of the GREATEST terry hall songs EVER! how could he exclude it from the u.k. release?

They were trying to rock the U.S. college crowd, I can see that. And it works. That opening trio of Baby/Daisies/Faint Hearts cannot be fucked with or improved upon.

And there is a long-standing tradition of including U.K. singles (in this case, "The Colourfield) on U.S. albums. But why didn't they put "Your Love Was Smashing" on the U.K. version?

Mood-wise and thematically, these are two RADICALLY different albums.

I just got a U.K. copy today at the record store. I thought: oh, cool, my old copy isn't in great shape, here's a clean U.K. copy. it'll probably sound a lot better. Boy, was I surprised! On the U.K. album "Faint Hearts" (one of my favorite songs by anyone ever) has a completely different a capella intro that is missing from the U.S. version!

And don't even get me started on the U.K. tracks "Armchair Theatre" and "Yours Sincerely". i know them from the U.S. colour field ep, but not as a part of the album.

long story short: u.s. version is GREAT. u.k. version is not so great. it's nowhere near as powerful. don't get me wrong, i still love the individual songs on the album, but this is one case where an altered track-listing totally improves upon the original.

why do people have a problem putting slightly older singles on albums? especially if they rule?

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

Holy fucking shit are you kidding? I love this record too? I only ever had the UK version!!!

Bimble, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

Damnit why can't you mainline this into my iPod?

Bimble, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:17 (seventeen years ago)

"And there is a long-standing tradition of including U.K. singles (in this case, "The Colourfield)"

and also "I Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" which was another pre-album U.K. single. (just looked that up)

too bad smashmouth probably ruined that song for anyone who has never heard the awesome colourfield version.

wait, and "Take" was a single before it was on the album and yet that's on both versions. "Pushing Up The Daisies" was the b-side to the "Take" single. I can't believe they left that off the U.K. album. It's unbelievable. this isn't like tacking on "Dear God" to an already great XTC album. "Pushing Up The Daisies" totally MAKES the whole album. Everything revolves around it. (The rush of those first three songs is so powerful. thinking of you/faint hearts/castles in the air is the like the polar opposite almost. total power -vs- full-on whimsy (and faint hearts even loses a little of its power by being the tongue between two slices of whimsy)

Ah yes.

stephen, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:43 (seventeen years ago)

and "sorry" was a pre-album b-side! and "thinking of you" was a pre-album single! hmmm, was it terry's idea to put the poppier, softer stuff on the u.k. release? i may never know.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:44 (seventeen years ago)

i hardly ever say this, but...buy american. *gulp*. but it's true! so much more satisfying. i'm usually so happy to find a u.k. or overseas pressing of ANYTHING, cuz i know they will probably sound so much better, but in this case, i was wrong. doesn't sound much better and it made me wish i had a pristine u.s. copy.

but don't worry, i'm not crazy. euro releases almost always better. try telling someone that they positively HAVE to have a dutch or euro version of the first gruppo sportivo album and NOT a u.s. version. one is pure genius. one is near genius with a censored cover. and don't get me started on the chameleons.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

Goddamn you I don't even have the vinyl of this anymore! AARRRRGH

Bimble, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR

Bimble, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

Bimble, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

there is a japanese cd that compiles everything including non-album b-sides onto one cd. if i saw one cheap i would buy it. i don't buy CDs that often.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

There's always a Japanese CD isn't there?

steampig67, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

So wait, does thw Japanese version contain BOTH versions?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

wow just stumbled their version of the hammond song, I really like it - and it doesn't seem like the likeliest song to work as a cover.
a real heartbreaker. should I track down the rest of the record?

brio, Thursday, 16 June 2011 05:17 (fourteen years ago)

hell yeah. but i would say that.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 June 2011 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

In 1999, the album was re-released in Japan with twenty tracks, including all of the songs on the UK and US versions of the album plus all of the singles, B-Sides and remixes that were released before and immediately after the original release of Virgins And Philistines.

In 2010, the album was reissued once again, this new version was released by Cherry Red and it included most of the bonus tracks of the 1999 version.

From the wiki page.

I saw the Colour Field at some point between the release of "Thinking of you" and the next album. (I don't think they played the hit)

Terry was very grumpy, even though the audience sang happy birthday. (he smiled for that bit, then went back to being grumps).

They did a cracking version of "She", which was nothing like the eventual released version.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:35 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, Stump played support! I was trying to recall who headlined...

Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:38 (fourteen years ago)

i have the japanese version - totally worth it btw
