I am regularly, if not consistently baffled by the decisions made by the chimps who enter data for this service.

new Youthmovies album (complex prog-indie) is apparently "Gospel & Religious"

Don't even get me started on all the albums that are apparently 'compilations' because there is a guest artist on one or two tracks.

Another couple favorites - numbering the tracks and/or putting the artists name in the titles.

Yeah that's one of the things I was really surprised by when I first got my iPod. I thought "oh this very popular gadget must work well..." Nope. I've got plenty of complaints, yeah.
― Bimble, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)
You're responsible for what you put on your ipod, no-one else.

at least half the CDs I rip to my computer aren't on CDDB so I have to fill in all the tags myself (and have kinda come up with my own personalized genre filing system), but with the ones that are on CDDB I just leave the tags as is until I get annoyed with some lame genre tag and change it.
― some dude, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)
genre tags are the least of my problems with the CDDB compilations (especially imported) appear to have a 50/50 chance of either having the artist and song titles flipped or else half the information is in a language I can't type into the search bar
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)
that applies not just to comps but basically anything from asia
hey guys a lot of times the band or label enters this information and they think it's funny to put wacky genre names on shit. like i'm guessing that's what happened here:

There are MANY recordings of classical works. Include the performer and conductor, dumbasses.
― Oilyrags, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)
iTunes actually requires you to label it that way else it will not sort albums with guests correctly. Blame Apple.
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
Very well, I shall!
It's equally annoying when you have a folder for 'x featuring y' and just one song in it and it's not in the same folder as the rest of the tracks on the album.
― Oilyrags, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, where's the 'iTunes is fucking rubbish' thread so I can rant about how much I fucking hate iTunes?
― asey, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)
See, I edit all of my tracks with "featuring" artists as follows:
Title: "Lollipop (f. Static Major" Artist: Lil Wayne
rather than:
Title: "Lollipop" Artist: Lil Wayne feat. Static Major
I feel like it keeps the artists' list cleaner.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)
Because you listen to albums, not tracks
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)
I'm about 50/50 actually, but I just prefer the way it looks when I scroll through the artists list instead of seeing:
Kanye West Kanye West feat. Lupe Fiasco Kanye West feat. Lil wayne Kanye West feat. GLC & Consequence Kanye West feat. Your Mom
Ya know?
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)
Not so- for example, take the Alan Braxe and Friends Upper Cuts comp (first example I could find alphabetically). Before ripping, make sure "compilation" is unchecked, enter the individual artist names (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke, Stardust, The Paradise, etc) in the "artist" field for each song, then enter "Alan Braxe and Friends" in the "album artist" field. It'll rip all of them into an "Alan Braxe and Friends" folder, and they'll show up together in itunes as an album by "Alan Braxe and Friends" but the individual artist names will all be intact. You can also do this for hip-hop stuff with "featurings," I just put that in the song title field though.

― Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)
I've got one song by Peter Gabriel that stubbornly sits in the 'G' section and refuses to be grouped with where the rest of my Gabriel stuff is (under 'P') despite me fiddling with the tag in "Get Info". How do you explain this shit?
― Bimble, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)
I get about six or seven of these on my iPod; everything pertinent is collected under each of them:
The Rolling Stones Rolling Stones

I wondered why people would enter something so crap on shit I'd d/led. Didn't realise it was an iTunes thing.
I rip everything using LAME and hand enter the data coz I'm anal.
Itunes is so pathetic in the options it gives you to sort stuff. Why can't I get albums to sort by artist not album title? Fuck you Apple.
Bimble -- probably you need to straighten stuff out in the sorting tab.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)
If you click on the 'artist' heading it should sort the albums by artist ?
More annoyingly, the 'albums by year' option doesn't seem to work. It sorts them artist - year - album but then goes and messes up the tracklisting.
― asey, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)
My iTunes has Blossom Dearie as jazz, for what it's worth.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
Actually this is what probably makes my blood boil the most. Yes you can usually fix it, but why all the hassle?
Sorting tab? I'll look for it, Raw Patrick, thanks. I never noticed a sorting tab before.
I really couldn't give a crap about genre names. Sometimes I'll give a group of songs a really stupid genre name just so I can import it as a playlist without having to fiddle too much in iTunes.
― Bimble, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)
Sorting tab is 3rd along when you do get info and determines whether stuff like "the" counts in band name or not.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)
To make it clearer, I get six or seven sets of:
This thread reminded me to add "The" to the handful of Stones tracks that needed it, but I still expect to see "The Rolling Stones" repeated needlessly a half dozen times.

Crazy making, but almost the only time I use "genres" is to choose from the dub albums I have . . .
― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)
So I gave up on correcting them.

Importing the five CDs of a JSP Charlie Parker comp last night, I discovered that CDDB provides a wildly different album title for each disk.
GRRRRR

― Oilyrags, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)
You know that you guys can easily fix these issues en masse by selecting all the tracks to fix, doing get info, and entering the correct info for all (just one time)?
― libcrypt, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)
OK, not all the issues, but any that are common to all tracks selected.
― libcrypt, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)
Haha, yeah, and wrt to genre tags I don't really give a shit anyway. Besides, complaining is fun!
― Oilyrags, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)
Genre tags are useful for things like random playlists if you set them yrself according to yr own notions of the artists you'd like to hear next to each other in a playlist.
― libcrypt, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)
Good tip, libcrypt, thanks! I was doing this track by track.
― Brad C., Monday, 23 June 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I knew you could edit multiple items at once, but I've actually found it to be more helpful recently than I would have thought. For example, Coldplay offered a song from their new album for sale prior to their albums' release. I bought it. Then when the album came out they offered me a reduced price on it so I wouldn't have to pay for the same song twice. But I was really frustrated because I couldn't get that song to group with the album tracks no matter what I did in "get info". I found the only thing that worked was to select all the tracks and give it the album title.
Also, thanks to Raw Patrick - he was right that there was something sitting in the sorting tab that was preventing that Gabriel track from grouping with the rest!
