SO WHAT CAN WE HEAR ANY OF THESE SONGS YET?
― wilter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)
friend opportunity was a major disappointment. i hope this is much better
― electricsound, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)
I hope this back to the awesomeness of Runners Four, I was kind of disappointed in Friendship Opportunity
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)
there were three or four superb songs on FO tho
― wilter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)
y'all are nuts, friend opportunity was awesome.
― Simon H., Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)
they're both awesome!

"One song from Offend Maggie will soon be available from an interactive website as a downloadable written score. Fans (or foes, or perfect stangers) can then record the song and share their mp3s with others on the website. It is not yet known which song it will be. Everyone can hear Deerhoof's own solution to the song when the album is released October 7."
xxxpost
they did it already for the last song in "runners four"
― Zeno, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

i will not listen to this band again until they sack the singer.

Greg Saunier's voice is so underrated, though.

FRIEND OPPORTUNIY WAS AND IS AWESOME!!!
can more of my favorite bands release an album every year plz?
― poortheatre, Thursday, 19 June 2008 10:20 (seventeen years ago)
I'm with the Runners Four fans here, Friend Opportunity was a bit of a letdown. Lets hope they remember to rock (by "rock" I mean "lurch like a tranquilised cow") again
― Thomas, Thursday, 19 June 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)
Agreed, Friend Opportunity = big disappointment.
Runner's Four was phenomenal. More such grooving please.
― Hadrian VIII, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)
i wonder how the fact that one of their guitarists left the band(Cohen?!) will effect their sound.
― Zeno, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)
That was the last record... for this one they got a NEW guitarist!
I'm with the "FO is awesome" crowd, but still wouldn't mind if the upcoming record is even better

haha yeah no doubt....she's pretty core the whole of the band...amazing bassist as well.
anyway i pretty much dig all the deerhoof stuff. friend opportunity included.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)
at least Friend Opportunity doresnt need the "skip" button as much as Runners Four does. and i think both are great.
― Zeno, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
'Friend Opportunity' was a step down from 'The Runners Four' I thought. The latter was pretty amazing though, and benefited from having three or four coherent different movements going on. The running order stymied 'Friend Opportunity' for me quite a bit, always found myself enjoying it more on shuffle.

Oddly enough they were even more transfixing live as a trio, imho.
at least for my experience,Deerhoof with 4 members > 3 members ,live
― Zeno, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)
they playes some songs of it live - sounds great. if the arrangements on the album are the same as the live set were, Maggie will be more jazzy/post rock than previous records, in a very good way.
― Zeno, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
still excited!!!
― M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)
jazzy is good!
postrock is not!
― wilter, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)
The running order stymied 'Friend Opportunity' for me quite a bit, always found myself enjoying it more on shuffle.
maybe that was my problem, because i never listened to this as much as i intended to, but whenever i would hear a track out of context i would be all "holy shit, this is pretty sick."
― Jordan, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)
i did prefer the first burn i made where i messed up the track order. 'whither the invisible birds' was a great opener.
what a solid band.
― poortheatre, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)
"jazzy is good!
postrock is not!"
i have to add that the songs werent slow or something, the jazzy/post rock/prog/math thing was played in the deerhoof way, which is kinda jammy, but fast and skillfully. before the show, "mr. know it all" by Primus was played at the background, and for the first time i could see some similiarities between the bands.
anyway,Maggie will sure be a 2008 highlight
― Zeno, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
BTW, I look forward to Zeno's album-oriented threads. This particular disc, ehh. . . I have my doubts. I like some of Friend Opportunity, I must admit.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 21 July 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
More jazzy/post-rock sounds like good news when it's about Deerhoof... really psyched for this. Hope I get to see them live on this aswell, as a trio on the FO-tour they were amazing.
― sonderangerbot, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)
"Zeno's album-oriented threads"
it's a dirty work, but somebody got to do it
― Zeno, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)
they were amazing each time i saw them and Greg Saunier is the god of drums
― Zeno, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
Noisier Deerhoof is gooder Deerhoof
― wilter, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)
But yuh I'm very much looking forward to the album.
― wilter, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)
God of drums is a fair description... I saw them at this smaller, not very crowded venue, so I could easily stand at the front basically putting down my beer on the stage floor. And when you heard just the sound on stage, and not so much the PA, I was blown away by how tight they were and just how well they know their sound.
― sonderangerbot, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
"Fresh Born” is the first single from Deerhoof’s upcoming record, Offend Maggie. Download the sheet music, make your own version, upload it to your webpage or blog, then post the link here. Deerhoof’s version of “Fresh Born” will be shared soon too. Then get ready for Offend Maggie — October 7th on Kill Rock Stars!!!! "

when i was 14 i learned to play keyboards and could read sheet music, but now...
here are some people at the prospect park show trying to "sing it": http://www.imposemagazine.com/mag/index.php/deerhoof-leaks-new-song-in-non-audio-format/
― Zeno, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
Someone should make me a Deerhoof primer. I think the only thing I've heard is "Matchbook Seeks Maniac" from Friend Opportunity, but I really like that song.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
I think I dismissed them for a while because I thought they would be too weird for me, but I suspect they are the right kind of weird. Unless that song is really atypical or something.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)
Apple O' + Runners Four + Friend Opportunity = Deerhoof less experimental, much more pop and absolutly awesome.
― Zeno, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)
correct me if im wrong but i think this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3YcVCxgFVE
and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-GNg7GolVA
are new songs
― Zeno, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)
revielle is super dope dawg, don't front on that album either!!!!!
i like the more fucked up US maple type shit. but their pop shit is rad too.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)
Someone said, live, 3-person Deerhoof < 4-person Deerhoof, but I thought they pulled it off awful damn well as a 3-piece on the last tour. It's just that, as a record, FO was boring after the first four songs. Older stuff still sounded GREAT live.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)
Sheet music! I wish more bands did this.

― Zeno, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)
Reviving to say again that I love Deerhoof's decision to make the sheet music available (I guess they figure few will be able to play their complicated stuff, anyway?). More bands need to be courageous enough to do this.(n.1)
____________________________________ (n.1) My understanding is that many successful bands won't make sheet music available for fear of people learning their most valued trade secret (exactly and precisely how they play their songs). But my understanding may be way off-the-mark.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)
Also I kind of liked the PaperThinWalls group's version of the song.

hi this has leakt
― fREETIME (wilter), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, and surprisingly enough, it's kinda minimalistic, like a more accesible, melodic version of Apple o'or somethinf.
― Zeno, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)
i didnt get a chance to listen this morning :/
― RUSH LIMBAUM (jeff), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)
it's pleasent, it's good but it doesnt offer anything new or developed to their sound either. if anything, it's going back to the pre- runners four period, only with catchier, subtler tunes.and thats ok with me, too.
― Zeno, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah it's pretty tame.
― fREETIME (wilter), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)
i mean, with the new guitarist, i'm surprised its so minimal.sounds more like a trio.
― Zeno, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)
damnit don't tell me that. i want some freak out drums and strained guitars to infinity like the old stuff. what the hell.
― Beast, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
wow Buck and Judy is awesome
― Dominique, Thursday, 25 September 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
jesus christ did I miss the point where someone cast a spell that prohibits non-retarded discourse on this band, this thread
this record is completely amazing. they've somehow simultaneously leveled up both the prog and the discipline. "snoopy waves" might be the funkiest thing i've heard in the past X years, even to the point where saying "funky" doesn't upset me
also the ballads/lighter stuff seem to work better here, they seem to have dropped the indie/twee in favor of sort of a simon&garfunkel/madrigal/CSNY thing
― Bangelo, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:25 (seventeen years ago)
they've somehow simultaneously leveled up both the prog and the discipline. "snoopy waves" might be the funkiest thing i've heard in the past X years
^^that is not non-retarded discourse
― 'Breaker' Moran (wilter), Friday, 26 September 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)
that's fair
― Bangelo, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)
(snoopy waves is awesome though)
― 'Breaker' Moran (wilter), Friday, 26 September 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)
I know! I guess I'm just amazed that people already inclined to pay attention to Deerhoof wouldn't be all over this. I guess production-wise it's more consistent/focused, but I don't see that at all as being a bad thing here. The songwriting and composition is all pretty epic.
― Bangelo, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

just got the vinyl through the post. sounds good, like a more poppy runners four. oh yeh and it came with a sheet music booklet which contains the whole album arranged for piano and voice.
― zappi, Friday, 3 October 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)
i wish you could get instrumental versions of deerhoof albums
― Jordan, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
it's a good album, but it has it buts.
― Zeno, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)
it's bizarre how the vinyl version doesn't start w/The Tears and Music of Love. such a great opening track; i got used to the cd order...weird. it's in the middle of side one. ?A N D , i'm seeing them on thursday. anyone know anything about Experimental Dental School? is it worth going early to hear them?
― nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)
Chandelier Searchlight is my favorite Deerhoof song right now.Saw them in Milwaukee last week and they were quite awesome.I only caught the last couple of EDS songs - did'nt leave much of an impression.
― Pinto Basin, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)
where did they play in mke? i didn't know about it.

I like this yet I can't really place the songs that well even after repeated listens. The production is dope, vinyl sounds amazing.
― sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
The Runners Four > Offend Maggie > Milk Man > Apple O > Friend Opportunity > Reveille
Out of the ones I know well. This record is fantastic..gets rid of the all-over-the-place unsatisfyingness of FO and recaptures some of the groovy glory of TRF.
― Mister Craig, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)
sonderangerbot otm, love the production on this.
ed rodriguez (formerly of iceburn, for one) is a perfect addition to the deerhoof lineup, great energy. really nice guy too
switch milk man w/ runners four and reverse the signs and mister craig's list is just like mine

― zappi, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)
Seeing them this weekend. Offend Maggie is quickly growing on me, but I was disappointed on first listen how simplistic it is. Title track and Buck and Judy are great. Basket Ball has cracked me up every time I've heard it, especially the time while driving to play basketball.
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)
i don't really like what i've heard of this so far, seems way less interesting than friend opportunity.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)
it doesn't really have the peaks that some of the other albums have but it's nice and pretty and consistent and works better as an album than most of their other albums. i still prefer the old loud stuff with the previous second guitarist, they did some great stuff with dual guitars back then
― metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)
I like this album, esp. the title track. Perhaps I should check out other Deerhoof albums.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)
it's kind of weird how much their sound has changed yet stayed the same across all their albums

Runners Four did feel like some kind of a peak. I like the new one though.
