I guess this started off on one hand with stuff like booker t, and on the other hand with guys like jimmy smith, boogaloo joe jones, and leon spencer. these days i hear it in bands like lefties soul connection, budos band, calypso king and the soul investigators, etc, but i'm interested in recommendations on some of the old stuff that works this sound. i think the definitive lps that i have in this "genre", if you want to call it that, are 'where i'm coming from' by leon spencer and 'no way!' by boogaloo joe jones.
this thread is for recommendations and discussions of this sound and anything that comes remotely close.

I just picked this up and so far it hasn't blown me away like I expected it would. I could very well be dead inside but it's still early.. I liked Montgomery's "Smokin at the Half Note" better.

Lee Michaels would seem fit for this thread. Often dropped the guitar entirely in favor of loud Hammond and drums, no bass, none needed. Most noteable for Lee Michaels and Lee Michaels Live.

yeah the jimmy smith/wes montgomery records are not quite as killer as they should be ... though that cover is awesome.

i've never loved organ based jazz, but if you're into that kinda stuff, you should check out charles earland.
i do love Larry Young's later fusion stuff. so hard.
lee michaels is pretty fucking great.

Jack McDuff's "Moon Rappin" is awesome ... but I generally like the early 70s jazz organ stuff better, guys like Ronnie Foster and Mandre ... more synth-o-sizers.

i guess so: http://www.amazon.com/Hail-Caesar-75-Frazier/dp/B00000JO9N
for a new groove : chris joss.
last years album, sticks, was all david holmes style 70s funk with sitars, this years album, monomaniacs volume 1, is authentic funked up hammond organ riffs.
a little cheesy in parts perhaps, but in small doses, absolutely brilliant.
