Mackro Mackro, Monday, 23 June 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

It's pretty clear which will be #1

I'm more interested in what will be #2.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 23 June 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Yeti followed by Phallus Dei if I was voting, but I am guessing that Wolf City will be #2 in the poll.

Alex in SF, Monday, 23 June 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

and yet, four votes in total.

(I'd voteYeti, but it's the only one I've got)

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 07:46 (seventeen years ago)

I thought 'Lemminge' was the accepted "other one to get"

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 08:37 (seventeen years ago)

... dunno about that. "Yeti" 1st and "Wolf City" 2nd is right, when all is said and done.

Tom D., Tuesday, 24 June 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

since I am just getting to know this group belatedly the poll results & comments will be my consumer guide.

vote carefully.

m coleman, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

I never listen to sides 3 and 4 of Yeti but I jam Wolf City from beginning to end time and time again. Lemmings is a mess.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

I never listen to sides 3 and 4 of Yeti

BO-RING

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

I'll trot out my standard issue minority opinion; yeti's great but live in london is what I listen to more than any other, it brings the rock.

now you will know where that 1 vote came from.

Edward III, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

I had a cd of Live in London that sounded terrible. What format of the album have you got?

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

yeti >= tanz > wolf city >>>>>>>>> who cares what else phallus dei is lame

69, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

Here is likely the only vote for "Made In Germany."

it's the reish on repertoire. haven't heard the newer version on revisited.

Edward III, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

I think mine was Captain Trip or something. The Repertoire reissues that I've heard all sound excellent. There have been some really terrible sounding cd reissues of this stuff over the years.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

I had the version on UA. It was OK.

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

coleman - in order:

Yeti
Wolf City
Phallus Dei
Carnival In Babylon

If you like those, you'll be pretty disappointed in everything that came after. I'd stop there.

Also, for curios, check out the Amon Duul I album too

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

Viva La Trance is good, though.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

And which Amon Duul album do you mean?
Psychedelic Underground is great, so is Para Dies Warts Duul.
There are a lot of gems in the Amon Duul mine.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

My top 2 remain "Yeti" and Wolf City". "Phallus Dei" seems to get less impressive the longer the album goes on. Agree that "Lemmings" is a mess, but it's still better than "Carnival", which has always struck me as a bit feeble - I'd probably sooner listen to "Vive la Trance" than either and, actually, I probably would listen more to "Made In Germany"! "Hijack" is pretty crap. Never heard anything else. Oh, "Lemmingmania" has some OK, but not startlingly brilliant, singles and b-sides on it.

Tom D., Tuesday, 24 June 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

I think a lot of post Wolf City albums are slept on. They're not as good as the earlier ones, but none of them are bad.

Late 70s AD2 >>>> Late 70s Can, for instance

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

I do stop at Vortex, tho

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

"Late 70s AD2 >>>> Late 70s Can, for instance"

Damning with faint praise there if you ask me.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

Well, yeah.

Later AD2 albums aren't solid, but each has at least 2 great songs.

Best Of Post Wolf City comp time!(?)

"Kirk Morgan" from '78's Only Human is one of those tracks. it's waay ahead of its time as far as use of electronics in a dance fashion. It's quite different than Moroder's work at the time, and there's a lot going on in that track as far as genre-mashing that no one could have probably predicted.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

Late 70s AD2 >>>> Late 70s Can, for instance

No way, I love "Saw Delight"

Tom D., Thursday, 26 June 2008 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

Nada Moonshine

Someone defend this.

Matt #2, Thursday, 26 June 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Defend "Hijack" being better than "Soon Over Babaluma", or, like, in the same universe as

Tom D., Thursday, 26 June 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

haha, I'm not going to do that, but I'll defend anything up to Vortex being better than Saw Delight, Out Of Reach, and Can (Self titled).

Hijack is pleasant psych pop guitar album, not really proggy at all -- at least if you pretend it's a totally different band than the one who made Yeti or Tanz. Soon Over Babaluma is a better album, but I listen to Hijack more.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

De Guadaloop is a highlight, as well as I Can't Wait, both parts.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 29 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Phallus Dei remains my favourite, especially in its original cover: http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s689634.jpg

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

It becomes more difficult to more I listen to Phallus and Wolf City, as I'm really coming around to those albums, and Renita rocks on both of those far more relatively...

but Tanz is tugs at my heart. It's not a good album to cherry pick moments on. But the construction of that album is so influential to me and serves as the best role model on how to make a multi-part song, period. The end of Restless with the creeping rock groove and the funny voices and then the horrifying "AAAAAAAAACK"... "EEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAACH" out of fucking nowhere is one of my favorite rock moments ever.. and this is within the final 30 seconds of the major opus too. (Sorry for the spoiler, lol.)

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

went with Yeti, still have no idea what the consensus choice is supposed to be but from the looks of this thread, it's Yeti? I just really love that song "Archangel's Thunderbird"; there's a great video of it too.

Euler, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

I like the 1st 5 a lot and could have a different favourite album each week. Made In Germany is also good.
But Yeti gets my vote.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

And I love the later song Metropolis I bought a greatest hits cd about 10 years ago just for that song.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

to clarify, well yeah, Yeti is fucking amazing. Tanz just beats it in a photo finish for me, that's all. Phallus Dei and Wolf City are just a second behind each.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

Also worth mentioning: of all the 18 minute improv pieces between Yeti and Tanz, the single one on Tanz,"The Marylin Monroe Memorium Church", beats any of the three on Yeti, even though all four of them are great. ("Sandoz In The Rain" is a bit more meh than the others tho.)

John Weinzierl is interviewed and goes through all the AD2 albums up to and including Wolf City.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

best thread title for a poll yet

get bent, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

Is anything else on Only Human as good as "Kirk Morgan???" Because if so I'm totally buying it

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 31 July 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

carnival in babylon was such a letdown for a first buy from these guys

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 31 July 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - not *as* good unfortunately, but there are other good ones too. "Spaniards and Spacemen" is awesome.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 31 July 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

Later when we recorded Phallus Dei, the first Amon Duul album, this former producer realized that Phallus Dei was a major seller. His greed told him to get the useless tapes back from the dungeon and every time we released an album, he cut an album's worth of those tapes and brought it to the market to use our success. Unfortunately, we were too inexperienced then to stop this, and so we have a big pile of rubbish being released as Amon Duul. The sad thing is that some people like this shit.

Ouch! No love for Paradieswarts Duul?

Sparkle Motion, Thursday, 31 July 2008 05:19 (seventeen years ago)

I think he means Disaster and Experimente...

sleeve, Thursday, 31 July 2008 05:39 (seventeen years ago)

Probably right.

Sparkle Motion, Thursday, 31 July 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

Well, John Weinzierl plays on "Paradieswarts Duul", so I imagine he doesn't think it's shit, I think it's all the other albums he considers shit! I didn't even know Peter Leopold was dead :(

Tom D., Thursday, 31 July 2008 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

six years pass...

Q: Is the remaster of Phallus Dei a huge departure from the previous reissue? The one I have sounds like total garbage but I don't want to buy another one if it's not substantially improved.

carnival in babylon is so great, strange to see it lagging far behind WC in this poll

first of all yes -- the first like 2 min of that song are delicious, then imo it goes off the rails in a direction i don't really enjoy as much. i love the drums in the first portion an absurdly large amount though.
it starts off so promisingly and then...chicka chicka :-/ i just want the monster groove, lol
i like the album as a whole, but can't quite shake off a negative vibe from the title

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 16:27 (eight years ago)

for sure the first few times i heard it i felt that but the more i've listened the more i appreciate the prog scatting 'chicketachicketachicketydow' before the amazing break a la "sound chaser"'s 'chachachachacha' -- give me a land! it's going to be weird! -- as the chorus to the national anthem of krautrocksampleria. the places it goes are where the court of the crimson king only hinted

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 16:52 (eight years ago)

ZEY BROKE MY MAGIC STICK!

frogbs, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 17:34 (eight years ago)

i do like "it's going to be weird"

i just don't really need to hear that part of the song. i am there for the jam.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 18:50 (eight years ago)

the last 10 minutes of the title track are amazing. I've yet to find anything that sounds quite like it.

frogbs, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 18:55 (eight years ago)

two weeks pass...

"restless skylight - transistor - child" might be their best sidelong epic

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:28 (seven years ago)

"Vive La Trance" is my fave... luv that slick, sinewy, sophisticated sound. YMMV, tho.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Thursday, 24 May 2018 22:25 (seven years ago)

(Further to the above -- "Trap"->"Pig Man" is such a killer one-two punch of pop/rock jams!)
