Bee OK, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

balls, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

This one is also really tough, but I'm gonna vote for the Nightcrawlers cuz I dig that song. Interestingly unlike the first volume where the stompers tended to rule, the best tracks on this one tend to be the poppier ones.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

For me it is between these songs, all of them true pop gems:

6. Outside Chance - Turtles
10. Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock
18. Why Do I Cry - Remains
19. Laugh, Laugh - Beau Brummels
21. I Wonder - Gants
25. Live - Merry-Go-Round

"I Wonder" - although I love it - is ruled out because it sounded too much like "In My Life". "Outside Chance" is ruled out because, well, there are other Turtles tracks I would rather love to vote for.

Really hard to choose between the rest, but it has to be "Laugh Laugh" I guess.

"Talk Talk"

abanana, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

picked "Laugh, Laugh" by the Beau Brummels after originally thinking it was going to go to "Incense and Peppermints". could of realistically gone for about nine to ten different song on this thing. didn't realize, until today, how much bitterness there is towards women on this CD.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

how much bitterness there is towards women on this CD 95% of 60s garage rock.

electricsound, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta be 7 and 7 is. The weird breakdown part of that song kills.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

"Outside Chance" must be the winner. Surprised to see that it is a Warren Zevon track.

zeus, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

"follow me" from (i think) disc 4 is another one of his

electricsound, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

'sweet young thing', such an awesome groove.

haitch, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Those Music Machinists were up to no good. But I gotta go with my beloved "Spazz." Why settle for one song when you can have three?

I've never gotten the fascination with "The Little Black Egg." All the Nugget-ness is in the lyric.

how much bitterness there is towards women on 95% of 60s garage rock.

Yeah but I always suspected The Litter at least were frontin'. I bet they had their fair share of action women.

It's still the sexiest disc - Chocolate Watch Band, Swingin' Medallions (more for the context than the band or song). And my favorite pic in the booklet is adorable Kenny with his Kasuals because...well, just look at it really closely.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

SPAZZ!

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART!

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

Here's the part of the poll where I do the weaselly "I really want to say '7 and 7 Is' but I'll go with 'Incense & Peppermints' in case nobody else does" thing...only to change my mind and say "Nah, fuck that, NOTHING beats '7 and 7 Is!'" because truly nothing does, or almost nothing. That level of escalating weirdness - like Arthur Lee's afraid that all his nonsence about hypnotized dogs and ice-cream cones is too conventional, not sufficiently insane; so he has to resort to "Boom-bip-bip-loom-bip-bip, yeah!" Adding that "Yeah!" on the end for emphasis, as if we're supposed to know what the hell he's on about. And so on and so on until that atomic blast. The whole damn record is one big explosion! It's no wonder they had to break out the acoustic guitars on Forever Changes.

"Seven And Seven Is" is my 11 favourite songs of the moment, fuck.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, gotta go for love. gonna go for chocolate watch band if "are you gonna be there (at the love-in)" comes up in another poll.

i really need to dig into The Turtles albums, which one should i seek out first?

Bee OK, Thursday, 26 June 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

This is way harder than the poll for the original Nuggets (disc 1).

billstevejim, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

this is totally the best disc in the set.

goin with "last time around," myself. so heavy! almost-sabbath-heavy! and agh the raveup in the middle! so rad.

pretzel walrus, Friday, 27 June 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

Another for the Sonics, but this is very hard. I spent a lot of the 80's partying to this stuff.

Soukesian, Friday, 27 June 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 28 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

These are all fabulous but today I went with "Can't Seem to Make You Mine", just ahead of "Spazz" (that riff!).

Euler, Saturday, 28 June 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

i'm going with another unpopular choice...Shape of Things to Come. I just dig it so much.

dan selzer, Sunday, 29 June 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 29 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Lot of good stuff didn't get a vote.

A good singles compilation would be the best place to start. Other than that, I would say "Happy Together" is the best. Perhaps also "Battle Of The Bands" although that one contains some rather strange tracks too.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 June 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

don't forget Turtle Soup. Especially if you are a Kinks fan. One of the most underrated albums of the 60's and the only outside production work that Ray Davies ever did:

The Turtles Thread (Cuz I Couldn't Find One) A.K.A. I Finally Heard Turtle Soup.

scott seward, Monday, 30 June 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

actually, anyone who likes 60's rock and pop should own a copy of Turtle Soup and i'm always surprised by how many people have never heard it. i can't believe mojo hasn't hyped it by now. or maybe they have.

scott seward, Monday, 30 June 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

I think Battle of the Bands is several years ahead of its time. (And I don't even particularly like the Turtles!)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 30 June 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

thanks for that Scott, will be getting that shortly.

Bee OK, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

WTF I'm the only one who voted for Blues Magoos. bullshit

billstevejim, Thursday, 10 July 2008 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

billstevejim, Thursday, 10 July 2008 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

yes all are great but outside Paul Revere, none of those are the best song on this disc.

Bee OK, Thursday, 10 July 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

sixteen years pass...

How did "Nobody But Me" get no votes? That drop where it goes all psychedelic is so, so great.

The best comp is the best of all-time.
