It's jammy, weird and wonderful. It's Nomo's new album 'Ghost Rock'
NOMO's previous effort, the brilliant New Tones, relishes in a swaggering "live" shuffle of acoustic percussion, tape-bleed, shimmying horns and lugubrious tempos. This time around, the band tightens up those loose ends, harnessing the rhythms into edited sequences, boosting the tempos, injecting more Funk into the mix and largely eschews the Balinese gamelan-like feel in favor of electric mbiras. Compare and contrast aside, how is it? The prominent horn section is still spot-on and a bit more mature, showcasing virtuosity across the disc, but the draw of this band, that which gives their music a unique, compelling and immediately gratifying personality, has always been the organic, raw nature - the occasional stray note and all. Perhaps these are live jams translated in the studio, but the dancier (more East African than Carl Craig), more mechanical nature is something fans will need to acclimate to. Not worse, not better: just different. Let it stew for a bit.
My forum alias is The Macallan 18 Year and I endorse this record.

re that blurb:

MORE East African??? Than Carl Craig?!??

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sort of adjusting to this after their first album, which was MY JAM for about a year. This is WAY more electronic and structured and it's not hitting as hard as New Tones, but I'm willing to keep with it for a minute.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't realize they had a new one out, New Tones is still a favorite of mine.

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

not that i don't like the sound of that

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

just kidding

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

no i'm not

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, i really do like the clips from their myspace page, but they just kinda sound like antibalas with thumb pianos and maybe a bit of post rock. what was that band on Hefty that did african type stuff? Slicker?

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

please stop

cutty, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

no, go on.
although truth be told jaxon, they're really great live and all the rest of that "oh god are they co-opting hipsters? i'm so conflicted"-jive is sorta whatever past that.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

good to know that they're great live, i saw that they're playing in sf on 9/5, will def be there.

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

yes I like that clip, but it almost seems like I would like the older stuff more

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 26 June 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

they r my friends.

This new one might help them blow up a bit, judging from the gathering rumble in the blogosphere. They've got their own ILX thread now. Top marks from Pitchfork and who knows? Bergman and his crack team of hippies and their jazz degrees from The University of Michigan.. I'd say "whooda thunk it," but the truth is, they really are fucking great, even when they are practicing in yr basement at noon on Sunday when you're nursing a hangover. Eliott is hot shit, period. It's nice to see him outgrowing his Fela Kuti fetish (if you've heard their first record, you'll know what I mean) and begin chiseling out his own vision. Given his youth, drive and ability, I'd mark him as one to watch, seriously. No uppin my bros or anything. The guy just has that thing. And for any of you muso jazz types out there who care about the technical aspects of drumming and such, check out their drummer: Dan Piccolo. In a town full of hypereducated drum geeks who dedicate themselves to speed and complexity, this guy was a whole tier above the rest of them.

As noted upthread: Personal biases be damned, go see them live if you can. They will blow your mind grapes.

listening to this on myspace now...pretty fucking awesome

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 27 June 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

Could've sworn I started a New Tones thread... took Jon and Tza to see them on my birthday two years ago!

forksclovetofu, Friday, 27 June 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

That's cool fct, I've never done a search for them on ILX so I probably missed the last one. Are you talking about the CMJ show in 2006? ( just venturing a guess, based on how many ILXrs are from NYC). If so, I was at that one as well.

Pillbox, Friday, 27 June 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

At Joe's Pub?

forksclovetofu, Friday, 27 June 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

Think so. It was around halloween, if I'm remembering correctly.

Pillbox, Friday, 27 June 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, good. I was hasslin' Bergman about getting a new one out. I've got a couple of live shows they did at WCBN that are fantastic. Hopefully, they'll come to the west coast soon ('specially since their label's here).

8.3. I enjoy reading Joe Tangari's Pitchfork reviews. He's a good writer (he usually reviews the "world music" discs).
