"Ebony and Ivory" is a 1982 number-one single by Paul McCartney, performed with Stevie Wonder. It was released on March 29 of that year. At the simplest level, the song is about the ebony (black) and ivory (white) keys on a piano, but also deals with integration and racial harmony on a deeper level.

Just the enunciation of py-ah-no

Eric H., Friday, 27 June 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

the use of the phrase "piano keyboard" is kinda awkward, like many things in this song

The Reverend, Friday, 27 June 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

landslide on this one...

PappaWheelie V, Friday, 27 June 2008 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

that momus post is a kind of conceptual art piece on the concept 'tl;dr'

banriquit, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

No fewer than four totalising, reductive tropes appear in that introductory statement: 100% of us know that 100% of us are 100% the same in 100% of the world.

(xxxpost) Classic Momus pedantry...

It's not as bad as "My Love," the hit Stevie Wonder had in duet with Julio Iglesias in 1988, lyric apparently written by Hongro, G:

"My love is warmer than a smile
My love gives to every needing child
If anyone should ask you who's my true love
Tell them my love true is ever letting all their love come through."

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yes but how exactly do you sit side by side on a piano keyboard?

Tom D., Friday, 27 June 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

... which appears to be the avowed intention of Steveland and Macca after all

Tom D., Friday, 27 June 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

And predictably I have Babelfished the Iglesias/Wonder epic into Spanish and back to find:

"My love is hotter than a smile
My love gives each boy of necessity
If any person requests who' to him; s my true love
Dígales that my love truth never is leaving all their love arrives."

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

Obviously Macca didn't feel that this duet was awkward enough, so he sang "The Girl Is Mine" with Jacko...

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

I'm looking at that record cover and I'm seeing a subliminal cat's face on Jacko's crotch. Is anyone else seeing this?

NickB, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

It's really quite disturbing.

NickB, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

I obv. haven't spent as much time as you staring at Michael Jackson's crotch

Tom D., Friday, 27 June 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

You wanna come pet the kitty son?

NickB, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't that the name of a Gary Glitter B-side?

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

No llamas no credibility

Tom D., Friday, 27 June 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

it saddens me that i can't vote for "At the simplest level, the song is about the ebony (black) and ivory (white) keys on a piano, but also deals with integration and racial harmony on a deeper level."

fact checking cuz, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

i genuinely love this song. i know this is unforgivable. also, all the perinent parts of the eddie murphy/joe piscopo SNL version have been quoted, so i have nothing to add.

stevie, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

Nothing from the Culturcide version yet, though.

By the way, great to have you on ILM, Mr Wonder.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

The song is better than its current reputation, yet one of the weakest tracks on the otherwise excellent "Tug Of War" album.

"We all know that people are the same where ever we go" is terribly banal, but also quite true.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

If only the ebony barbarians had not wrecked music by ignoring ivory classicism melodics in favour of amelodic rhythm dominate hip op beats...

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Welcome back, Comstock!

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 June 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

I have never seen so many people at a concert simultaneously get up to go to the bathroom as when Paulie pulled this one out on the Flowers in the Dirt tour.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 28 June 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

As long as people don't launch from this into a needless assault on "Say Say Say," s'all good.

"Ebony & Ivory" > "The Girl Is Mine" >>> "Say Say Say"

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 June 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

this is one of the worst songs of all time

J0hn D., Tuesday, 1 July 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

My husband and I have changed the lyrics of this song in order to make it about our cats.

kate78, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

Why didn't you just name your cats "Ebony" and "Ivory"?

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

or testicles?

PappaWheelie V, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

One is black, the other's orangy.

kate78, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 05:31 (seventeen years ago)
