I think The Stooges sort of mention it on the opening lines of '1969'

DJ Mencap, Friday, 27 June 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

Did Lee Renaldo ever figure out what year it was on 'Hey Joni'? Poor dude was strugglin' there.

NickB, Friday, 27 June 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

There's Lifter Puller song where he says 1999, but I can't remember which one it is.

I have a vague feeling there's something from SY's Goo or Dirty as well.

David Berman does it on good 'ol American Water's 'Random Rules' - "In 1984 I was hospitalized for approaching perfection ... "

'1967' on the Auteurs' How I Learned to Love the Bootboys - not the year it was written, but I think it's the year Haines was born, and then he mentions 1999 a bit later on in it and says everyone's record collections are shite, presumably 'cos not enough of them have Auteurs records in.

Clash "1977"

"It's 1977/ Guns in West 11"

Wire "It's So Obvious"

"This is '77/ Nearly heaven"

Canned Heat "Same All Over"

"Well 1968 is turning out fine

This is not exceedingly rare.

And, wow, were Canned Heat wrong about 1968!

There must be a bunch of songs from 1984 that say the year. 'Sex Crimes' for one.

NickB, Friday, 27 June 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

I think The Stooges sort of mention it on the opening lines of '1969'

Iggy sings "it's 1969 OK, all across the USA", and also repeatedly "it's 1969, baby".

The Stooges' "1970" pulls the same trick, "1970, rolling in sight"

Martha & the Muffins, "Black Stations/White Stations":

A voice inside my car told me today
there was a song of love they would not play
She was black, He was white
A voice inside my car told me today

Black stations, White stations break down the doors
stand up and face the music, this is 1984
Black stations, White stations feet on the floor
dance on the ceiling with us, this is 1984, Ha!

When I Dream, I dream in black and white
trip the light fantastic through the night
Dance with me while they sleep
When I Dream, I dream in black and white

Black stations, White stations break down the doors
stand up and face the music, this is 1984
Black stations, White stations feet on the floor
dance on the ceiling with us, this is 1984, Ha!

If waves could speak, I wonder what they'd say
the tides are growing stronger everyday
Sink or swim, let them in
If waves could speak, I wonder what they'd say

Black stations, White stations break down the doors
stand up and face the music, this is 1984
Black stations, White stations feet on the floor
dance on the ceiling with us, this is 1984, Ha!

Black stations, White stations break down the doors
stand up and face the music, this is 1984
Black stations, White stations feet on the floor
dance on the ceiling with us, this is 1984, Ha!

She was black, he was white
She was black, he was white
She was black, he was white
She was black, he was white

British Sea Power "Lights out for Darker Skies"

"Unless 2007 becomes a pitch black heaven, stop acting like you're my best friend"

Album was an '08 release... now that was some poor planning.

Did Lee Renaldo ever figure out what year it was on 'Hey Joni'? Poor dude was strugglin' there.

I think he was reciting the years of birth of the members of SY.
