Can't really tell if this album is out yet or what, but to me it sounds like what I thought Animal Collective were going for with Strawberry Jam, but unlike that overproduced mess, this thing is completely amorphous and bizarrely iconoclastic and, at the same time, all over the place. Lot's of fun too, the Vampire Weekend ILM has been looking for or more shite indie to complain about at the MBV reunion concerts?

Album is called Skeleton btw
One of my favorite "underground" bands in Los Angeles...I'm happy to see them come up here. The new album is due July 8th, I believe.

― stevie, Monday, 30 June 2008 12:54 (seventeen years ago)
I didn't realise I had been waiting for it for so long, it is a weirdly perfect combo of everything that's supposed to be hip now though (balearic no wave) which makes me a little suspicious but could not would not put me off as it is excellently great.
― I know, right?, Monday, 30 June 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)
"balearic no wave"
Two month ILM ban on "balearic" please.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 30 June 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)
What does that phrase mean anyway? The band members are not from the Balearic islands, do not ride horses from that region, nor do they sing in Catalan; of course, they refer to themselves as "tropical pop punk," which isn't entirely helpful either...
― augustgarage, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)
it means slow, propulsive dance music with shimmery sounds, strong basslines and either a little or a lot of psychedelic flourishes
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)
What is it supposed to have to do with the Balearics, do linstrom and studio live in the balearics? I know I used it first on this thread but I'd like an eymology of the word and why.
― I know, right?, Monday, 30 June 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)
etymology
the sound was first popularized by a german dj named friedrich balearic
― max, Monday, 30 June 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I don't think I ever ended up really listening to this. It's kinda samey and trebly, could be these shitty speakers tho
― I know, right?, Friday, 22 August 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)
No. You nailed it. I've found two layers to this album. Most of the sounds and tunes have an Animal Collective vibe, and that expectation leads to a second expection: that the production should like Animal Collective's -- rich and textured. But Abe Vidoga are basically from the noise rock scene, so they made the production flat, metallic and kind of aggressive in that "trebly" way you're responding to. This accentuates the rhythms with are truly post-punk/no wave in that they're anti-grooves. Incessant and harsh, especially that kettle drum sound, which is usually associated with Caribbean laid back fun. I'm not sure if I like this album, but I like that clever trick they pulled (intentional or not). At least, that's what I've noticed!
― QuantumNoise, Friday, 22 August 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

Is that why? I know he was initially just the drummer because the band needed one--he was self-taught, and it sort of showed on everything before Reviver. New guy is really on the mark, though. And Crush is one of my favorite albums this year, with ease. Their new sound is probably how it is not least because the rhythm section allows for it now. A pleasant, if not unpredictable, change.

Listening to Sky Route (Star Roof) album from 2005, this is like no wave, Scissor Girls type noise, not like the stuff I've heard from them before at all.
They're playing London with No Age in a couple of weeks, will probably go I expect.

― I got yr comedy modding right here (HI DERE), Friday, 8 October 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
I'll give it another listen because I loved Skeleton so much, but the new album seems like a waste of time to me. It's all well and good that they chose to take their sound in a different, more polished direction, but in the process they've apparently lost all of the off-kilter energy that made them so fucking awesome. I guess the best thing to do is listen to this as if it is an entirely different band. But I can't help but feel disappointed that they seem to be chasing some sort of trendy sound (and haven't pulled it off very skillfully.)
― your mother verna (abbygarnett), Friday, 8 October 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not sure it's the sound that bothers me, but the songs? The most polished and electronic sounding tracks stand out to me as the better ones, while some of the rest sound more like the kind of neo-80s new wave style that lots of bands have and is boring. Again, I only listened to it once!
― dan selzer, Friday, 8 October 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)
yea, agreed. they obviously were aiming towards a certain style and just missed the mark with the quality. They sound like they TRIED harder for something specific on this one, but they had such a pure sound when their recordings were lower quality, the singing was pitchy and it seemed like they were just going for it. "Cranes"? "Endless sleeper"? "Dead City/Waste Wilderness?" that shit was awesome.
― your mother verna (abbygarnett), Friday, 8 October 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)
man you are making me CRAVE this first album
― I got yr comedy modding right here (HI DERE), Friday, 8 October 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
They have more then one other...I don't like the oldest stuff much either! Just the middle!
It's not that I don't like the new one, I'm still processing it, but I feel like it's lost some of the energy and edge of Skeleton while not going far enough with the new wave sound. They should listen to Lansing-Dreiden, one example of an updating of that 80s new wave sound that works, for me at least.
I think it's Skeleton and the Reviver EP I love the most. The earliest stuff, the shouty no-wave stuff doesn't do it for me.
― dan selzer, Friday, 8 October 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

Those of you not feeling this album; what do you think of the last song, "We Have To Mask"? That, along with "Dream of my Love (Chasing After You)" are the two songs that are really elevating the whole album for me.
― I lettered in Sam and Carl (HI DERE), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)
"November" strikes me as pretty similar, or at least the most similar on Crush, to Skeleton. Thoughts on that?
― AlexPh, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)
ha yeah, I love that song too
The album goes in waves for me, alternating back and forth between pleasant soundscapes and attention-grabbing "oh wait which song is THAT" moments

objectively, dude is kind of a dodgy singer, but the yelpy thing he's doing goes really well with the music (it's kind of the Karen O effect, only with a guy)
