I have 2 hours on Thursday, July 3rd on wvvy.org and thought I might play songs that scrutinize America. Suggestions? They must not contain swear words.

Maria :D, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

The 12-inch "Freedom Mix" of "Born in the U.S.A."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

Clean version of Luda's "Slap."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

Los Lobos, One Time One Night

gabbneb, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

I guess American Pie is too obvious huh?
How about Dead Kennedys "We've Got A Bigger Problem Now".

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

I've got Morrissey "America is not the World" and John Wayne's Tribute to America so far.

Maria :D, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

Ah! That's a good Morrissey one, I wouldn't have thought of that.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

"The American Ruse" -- MC5
"I'm So Bored With The USA" -- The Clash

Way too obvious choices...But there must be better ones by...Tom T. Hall? Gil Scott-Heron?? Like that...

Maybe toss in 4th of July songs by X and Shooter Jennings while you're at it, though? I sure would.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

Not really scrutinizing America but putting it in a different context, but... "America Is Waiting" by Brian Eno and David Byrne.

jonathan - stl, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

"The Ugly American" by Big Black

stephen, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:46 (seventeen years ago)

I find myself going patriotic. I've got some John Denver now and the Montana Melody by Legrande Harvey. It's love/hate. Also playing "Fat-bottomed Girls"

Maria :D, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

Really, two hours of Chuck Berry would probably do it! (But that wouldn't leave room for anything else.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)

"200 years" from the nashville soundtrack
"america" by trick daddy

reacher, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

Aristocrats on a mountain climb
Making money, losing time
Communism is just a word
But if the government turn over
It'll be the only word that's heard

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

Little sister making minimum wage
Living in a 1-room jungle-monkey cage
Can't get over, she's almost dead
She may not be in the black
But she's happy she ain't in the red

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

Freedom
Love
Joy
Peace

Jimmy Nothing never went 2 school
They made him pledge allegiance
He said it wasn't cool
Nothing made Jimmy proud
Now Jimmy lives on a mushroom cloud

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

Freedom
Love
Joy
Peace

boom, boom, boom, boom
the bomb go
boom, boom, boom, boom
the bomb go boom.
Teacher, why won't Jimmy pledge allegiance?

-- Prince

Ice Cube - I Wanna Kill Sam

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

"The army is the only way out for a young black teenager.
We'll provide you with housing.
We'll provide you with education.
We'll provide you with everything you need to survive in life.
We'll help you to be the best soldier in the U.S. of A."

"Because we do more before 7 A.M.
than most niggers do in their whole lifetime."

I wanna kill him, cause he tried to play me like the trick
but you see, I'm the wrong nigga to fuck with
I got the A to the motherfuckin K, and it's ready to rip
Slapped in my banana clip
And I'm lookin.. (lookin..)
Is he in Watts, Oakland, Philly or Brooklyn?
It seems like he got the whole country behind him
so it's sort of hard to find him
But when I do, gotta put my gat in his mouth
Pump seventeen rounds make his brains hang out
Cause the shit he did was uncalled for
tried to fuck a brother up the ass like a small whore
And that shit ain't fly
So now I'm settin up, the ultimate drive-by
And when you hear this shit,
it make the world say "DAMN! .. I wanna kill Sam."

"Momma!! Some man at the front do'!"
"Sit yo' ass down."
"Uhh hi.. I have reason to believe that someone in this household
has just turned eighteen, am I correct?"

Here's why I wanna kill the punk
cause he tried to take a motherfuckin chunk of the funk
He came to my house, I let 'em bail in
cause he said he was down with the L.M.
He gave up a little dap
then turned around, and pulled out a gat
I knew it was a caper
I said, "Please don't kill my mother," so he raped her
Tied me up, took me outside
and I was thrown in a big truck
And it was packed like sardines
Full of niggaz, who fell for the same scheme
Took us to a place and made us work
all day and we couldn't have shit to say
Broke up the families forever
and to this day black folks can't stick together
And it's odd..
Broke us down, made us pray - to his God
And when I think about it,
it make me say "DAMN! .. I wanna kill Sam."

"I'm comin!"

Now in ninety-one, he wanna tax me
I remember, the son of a bitch used to axe me
and hang me by a rope til my neck snapped
Now the sneaky motherfucker wanna ban rap
and put me under dirt or concrete
But God, can see through a white sheet
Cause you the devil in drag
You can burn your cross well I'll burn your flag
Try to give me the H-I-V
so I can stop makin babies like me
And you're givin dope to my people chump
Just wait til we get over that hump
Cause yo' ass is grass cause I'ma blast
Can't bury rap, like you buried jazz
Cause we stopped bein whores, stop doin floors
So bitch you can fight your own wars
So if you see a man in red white and blue
gettin janked by the Lench Mob crew
It's a man who deserves to buckle
I wanna kill Sam cause he ain't my motherfuckin Uncle!

"We've gone nowhere in 200 years?"
"That's correct."
"We-we-we've gone nowhere in 200 years?"
"That's correct."
"We-we-we've gone nowhere in 200 years?"
"That's correct."

Beach Boys - Amusement Parks USA.
Laurie Anderson - O Superman, or Hendrix at Woodstock .. but those might be too long if you only have 2 hours.

What about This Land Is Your Land:

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

SFA, "Liberty Belle"

Liberty Belle is ringing out across the sea
And everyone sings along
Though she's singing way out of key
From the shores of Galilee
To the runways of Anglesey
You know we're digging to hell
Right past our oil wells
As the magpies fly from Tallahassee
To the sky
Memory Lane forgot her way after all this time
And she never learned from her mistakes
And all the crime
That caused the gulf of misery
That's separating you from me
You know we're digging to hell
Drowing in our oil wells
As the seagulls fly from Abu Dhabi
To the sky

The birds still sing their melodies
Songs of love and food and trees
Oh my, how they fly
So little do they know, yeah
Yet their days are numbered so
Alarms are ringing in the trees:

You know you're digging to hell
Drowning in your oil wells
As the ashes fly from New York City
Past the grimy clouds above New Jersey
Past the kids who like to smoke like chimneys
To the sky

Question: Are the anti-American choices coming from typically snide irony or ILM's general ignorance of decent pro-American tunes? Are you exclusively either stuck with the awful MC5 or are you singing with the Toby Keiths of the world?

Cunga, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'm including Copland, John Denver and Legrande Harvey. It doesn't have to be one or the other. I'm not going to include jingoistic tunes that say we're better than the rest of the world except ironically, but I'm all for songs that praise the beauty of our landscape.

Maria :D, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

"Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"

Pillbox, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 00:00 (seventeen years ago)

Are you exclusively either stuck with the awful MC5 or are you singing with the Toby Keiths of the world?

Ha ha, I nominated the MC5 song, and Toby Keith is probably my favorite singer of this decade. Go figure.

Woody Guthrie - "This Land Is Your Land"

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

Can't go wrong with the Fastbacks' In America:

Lately been thinking about
What it means to be in a country that's not
All that it should be
I don't know if I'm all ready to leave
Do you really want to be in America?
See - you don't really have to be in America
Somewhere else might be better
I'm not just talking about weather
But I don't think that I'd be willing to get up and go
You've got the answer?
Speak up if you know
Maybe it's just that I know
What it means to me to be living a life
Almost thinking free
I can pretty well choose how I want to be
Do you really want to be in America?
See, you don't really have to be in America
Somewhere else might be better
I won't be living here forever
But I don't think that I'd be willing to get up and go
You've got the answer
Speak up if you know
Who says your life's an easy ride?
Who says the government's on your side?
Think for yourself
Who cares what they decide . . .

scott seward, Thursday, 3 July 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Happy Birthday, America!

I blame this thread for making me dig out that damn Dylan song.

For next year:

Dr. John - "Mama Roux"

(She was the queen of the little red, white, and blue)

Grateful Dead - "U.S. Blues"

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 5 July 2008 13:14 (seventeen years ago)

Heard a bunch of awesome ones at the fireworks last night, but I was too busy being wowed to take notes. Weird juxtapositions of Sousa marches and 80s AOR and action movie soundtracks and uh, REM songs ("Pop Song '89" o_O).

When did fireworks start having musical soundtracks to them? Is this a recent development or has it always been going on depending on location?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 5 July 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

oops. Sorry. utterly failed on the scrutinize bit, although "u.s. blues" isn't entirely appreciative

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 5 July 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

"although "u.s. blues" isn't entirely appreciative..."

Garcia and Hunter were pretty patriotic in their own way.
