Rick James is cool and everything, but this is hardly a choice at all.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 July 2008 11:38 (sixteen years ago) link

You could poll Prince against any post-70s funk/R&B artist, and Prince would always win.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 July 2008 11:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Possibly Rick James in a fistfight, but is there a Smog song about Rick James?

linea, Friday, 4 July 2008 11:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I think these days Rick James is kinda stiff for a fistfight.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 July 2008 12:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Prince in a basketball game, apparently. Or a dance-off. Or a guitar-pull. Or a wardrobe throwdown. Or at hittin' the high notes. Or at, you know, writing great songs and making great records.

Being a weird-fucker-a-thon? Draw.

Rick James had the better 1978 debut album, and the better moustache. And The Mary Jane Girls were better than Vanity 6. Also, I preferred RJ's pro-cannibis stance, but that's kinda negated by his unfortunate pro-crack pipe stance.

Aside from that...

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 4 July 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

if you do it up to around 84, its a bit fairer.

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 4 July 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Myonga does a good job of reasoning this.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Friday, 4 July 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Apparently, Breakin' Out of L Seven is quite spendy on CD these days. And as best I can find, there are no complete-works-of-RJ collections yet.

I'm only spottily familiar with Prince from Purple Rain on (& LRC), and all that stuff just bores me senseless. Maybe his early recordings are better.

Prob worth getting the LP just for the cover:

This is fucking ridiculous. There is no fucking way Rick James should have a chance here.

HI DERE, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link

parliament/funkadelic vs prince may have been more interesting

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

This poll might have made sense in 1982.

Poor Rick James doesn't deserve to be put up against Prince.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow, I hadn't seen that album cover before, libcrypt. The inner label of the record looks just like the "Glow" album I've got though.

Anyway I can't stop hearing that part in my head where he sings "give it to me/what you say/give it to me right away..." at the end of "Give It To Me Baby". It's like a broken record in my brain.

Also I just got the Prince & The Revolution Live VHS cassette. I watched some of it last night. He was totally dressed over the TOP on that damn thing. It had to be the 80's or a guy could never get away with wearing that. Usually I don't care how he dresses, but I was kindof embarassed for him, actually. It was crossing the line into "too gaudy" territory.

I'm keen to see more Lisa on this video, though cause she is the hotnessssxxx.

I've got the Rick James "Street Songs" now, man. And I have lost my virginity. I will fight to death anyone who says Prince is better than that album, because these people are deluded.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 5 July 2008 23:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Street Songs is awesome, I have that on cd. My mate has the other early stuff on cd.

Bimble, Friday, 11 July 2008 23:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Prince is easily the best artist to have debuted during the last 30 years, I challenge anyone to dispute this claim.

Tuomas, Friday, 11 July 2008 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I dispute that claim.

Party Sausage, Friday, 11 July 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I admit I am hardpressed to think of someone with the depth and impact of his catalog who debuted post-'78, but my inner contrarian wants to disagree with Tuomas anyway
