the demented albums of George Carlin.

Okay, we've beaten up on Bill Hicks, now lets beat up on George Carlin.
I think the first two thirds of his career are cute but not spectacular. (ie. If you took the first, oh, 7 or 8 of his albums, you'd have enough to build a nice c120 mixtape. But thats it.); its the last four albums: Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics, Jammin in New York,Back in Town and You are All Diseased are the only ones that are good all the way through.
As as he transformed from the Hippy-Dippy Weatherman to the Disgruntled Nihilist, he started getting really good. Anyone want to challenge that assertion?

Also, the book on tape version of Napalm & Silly Putty is generally useless. Half of it is just Carlin repeating, verbatim, material from You Are All Diseased.

all joking aside, is he any relation of Marcello?

Though I agree with your take on Bill Hicks, I think this is the wrongest things I've read today. Not having heard the more recent Carlin material I can't really comment on its superiority over the earlier albums, but the first 6 albums were really quite solid, if a little bit dippy on the drug stuff. Carlin was like Hicks in that no matter how goofy or druggy he got, there was always an underlying humanity in the material and his outlook: there was a piece called "Gay Lib" on one of the records which was really quite enlightened, instead of the homophobic rant you'd probably expect out of a stand-up comedian. Lots of good social commentary, too. I can't point to pieces from those first 6 that I thought were a waste of time, myself.

Well, his first 6 albums were VEEERYYYY druggy. He sounded like he was half asleep...very slow. He started to pick up the pace a little with AM & FM And got even faster and more agressive with his mid-80s albums; but he would have a strong A-side and a weak B-side. His 90s albums are much stronger (read: the B-side of the tape was only 60% as cool as the A, rather than only being 40% as good.)

The only funny stand up comedian ever was Bill Cosby.

Cosby's fifties and sixties records = pure gold. And still more than fine after it -- Bill Cosby Himself was a great film.
