POLL: Sleeper "Do Not Miss" Performance at ATP New York

Message Bookmarked

I figure best act at ATP New York would be too predictable. So tell me what not to miss instead, that I might otherwise overlook. Not that there's too much to choose from, you know. But nonetheless. What would you absolutely *NOT* miss if you were going?

Needless to say, feel free to vote if you're not gonna be there.

What do I do now? Are we going under?

James Mitchell, Sunday, 6 July 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

C-Man, we miss you down here. Hope you up there smoking blunts with Pun and Pac and Heath Ledger in heaven.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Sunday, 6 July 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

Mercury Rev, just to see if they're finally going to turn into butterflies.

Billy Dods, Sunday, 6 July 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

Okay so maybe this was a lame poll. Vote anyway please.

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

Tough choice - a lot of sleepers on that list.

Hurting 2, Monday, 7 July 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

I was momentarily fooled by the thread title into believing (despite logic) that Sleeper had been added to the bill.

zaxxon25, Monday, 7 July 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

hahah oops!

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

mbv will win, maybe for good reason, but i wanna see built to spill doing "perfect"

Zeno, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

the whole point of doing a "sleeper" poll was to get away from the obvious DO NOT MISS performances, of which MBV is first and foremost, no doubt. i'm sure all 3,000 or so people will be at that one.

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

right.still, there is the mbv option to choose in the poll

Zeno, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

Om

Reatards Unite, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

the drones might be a nice one. def. NOT go to growing and low - so boring

Zeno, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

I saw Edan and Dagha's most recent set in London and it's really fun.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

xpost are you kidding about Low? absolutely one of my favorite live bands on the planet. soooo great.

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

also, question for anyone who knows... how do ATP set times work? are there gonna be overlaps? choose A vs. B for a certain time slot? or with only 30 bands at this one, do you think they'll be staggered so i can see everything i wanna see?

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

saw low open for wilco last year or so,most of the audience didnt pay much attention .(and i dont think it was cause they are wilco fans).
it wasnt bad, just nothing special

Zeno, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

i would never miss a chance to see Silver Mt. Zion.

myndbloom, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

Harmonia, Om, Meat Puppets, Wooden Shjips, Sonic Boom, Edan=All things I would very much like to see.
Taking into account the MBV=No brainer aspect.

Trip Maker, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

so which did you vote for, then?

;-)

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

Low are much better in a 300 capacity club, playing to their own fans. (This is true of almost every live show, mind.)

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

I think I voted for Harmonia? I don't put much thought into voting in these things in most cases.

Trip Maker, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

The Meat Puppets doing II sounds promising but, I am dubious that they will actually pull it off. No Bostrom, drug addled bassist...

kwhitehead, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, they played about 1/3 of it (along with a half dozen or so other songs) when I saw em open for Sonic Youth last year...

stephen, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

fuck buttons. not seen them live yet, playing the shit out of the album.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 7 July 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

Would love to see Fuck Buttons and Harmonia (have seen before and would definitely go again), Wooden Shjips and Polvo (have not seen and probably never will, sigh). Would quite like to see the Tortoise set.

Like Thurston Moore and all but have pretty much no desire to see him recreate anything from Psychic Hearts; likewise, Bob Mould in 2008 and Le Volume Courbe in any year seem worth avoiding. Saw the Drones once and went and hid in the bar downstairs.

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 08:16 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know about American ATPs but the UK ones I've been to (not for years but I think it's the same now) have overlaps between the times on the two stages, plus at least one of them running late.

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 08:18 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck Buttons bored me to tears live.

myndbloom, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

Lilys, maybe? there's a bunch of stuff on the list of acts that I'd have got all hot & bothered about in the late '90's but I'm a bit meh about now.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, they played about 1/3 of it (along with a half dozen or so other songs) when I saw em open for Sonic Youth last year...

I am glad to hear they played them but how did it sound?

kwhitehead, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno, I never saw em in their prime. But it sounded pretty good for Meat Puppets in 2007, nice 'n loose 'n jittery.

stephen, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

the drones are awesome on record. I bet they'd kick arse live. therefore they have my vote, since I don't think of Low as a "sleeper."

Simon H., Tuesday, 8 July 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

i do think of sleeper as a low, though.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

i've never heard the Drones on record (or at all, mind). what should i hear first?

stephen, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

Gemma Hayes. Because I'd be willing to bet that K. Shields gets up on stage with her...

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 02:40 (seventeen years ago)

Second album, "Wait Long By The River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By", especially 'Shark Fin Blues'...

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 02:43 (seventeen years ago)

i would like to see polvo.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

the whole point of doing a "sleeper" poll was to get away from the obvious DO NOT MISS performances, of which MBV is first and foremost, no doubt.

Perhaps you should have asked a slightly different question then?:
What would you absolutely *NOT* miss if you were going?

Voted MBV, because that's the answer to the question.

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

Gemma Hayes. Because I'd be willing to bet that K. Shields gets up on stage with her...
