i need to think about this a bit, but i want to see more answers. "Official Girl" is number one. "No Air" is number two. And it starts to get confusing after that (and OMG the chorus of that Annie song)

Tape Store, Monday, 7 July 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

Portishead "Small"

matinee, Monday, 7 July 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to list 15, because (a) I've included a handful of re-released/previously lost or unavailable songs, and I'm not sure they should count and (b) I've been so down on this year's new releases that I'm looking at this exercise as a way to reapproach 2008's offerings. With that in mind, here are 15 songs I've liked so far this year (in no order except that the first two songs -- both reissues -- are, by far, the best things I've heard this year):

Dennis Wilson -- It's Not Too Late
Spirit Of Israel -- Daniel
Annie -- I Know Your Girlfriend Hates Me
Atlas Sound -- Recent Bedroom
The Raveonetts -- You Want The Candy
Portishead -- Silence
Cut Copy -- Heart's On Fire
Mingering Mike -- Coffee Cake
My Morning Jacket -- Touch Me I'm Going To Scream (Pt. I)
Neon Neon -- Dream Cars
Mountain Goats -- Sept. 15, 1983
Why? -- Good Friday
Sian Alice Group -- Way Down To Heaven
Sun Kil Moon -- Heron Blue
Dengue Fever -- Sober Driver

This is heavily weighted toward indie rock, I guess. I like indie rock. Beyond that, (a) I haven't heard much exciting new stuff from other genres I enjoy (e.g., "world music," jazz) and (b) usually by now a handful of outstanding pop songs grabs my attention (last year it was Rihanna's Umbrella), but that hasn't happened so far this year. I do sort of like that "Sometimes I wake up early in the morning to play my con-con-congos" funky house song, but I'm not sure that's even a 2008 release, and it might be mostly novelty, too (haven't decided yet). Also, that Steinski reissue disc (What Does It All Mean) is great, but I'm not sure I could single out a particular song from it to include on this list.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 7 July 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

That Mingering Mike song is a novelty, too. I still love it. Can't really say why.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 7 July 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

This is missing a lot (and will be fixed later), but here's what comes to mind (roughly in order):
Cassie - "Official Girl"
Jordan Sparks feat. Chris Brown - "No Air"
Colby O'Donis feat. Akon - "What You Got"
Lil Mama - "L.I.F.E."/"A Milli Freestyle"
Alphabeat - "Fascination"
Mahjongg - "Rise Rice"
The Juan Maclean - "Happy House"
Hercules and the Love Affair feat. Antony - "Blind"
Kleerup feat. Lykke Li - "Until We Bleed (Cello Version)"
Mariah Carey - "Lovin' You Long Time"
Cupid feat. B.o.B. - "369"
Mariah Carey - "Touch My Body"
Wiley - "Wearing My Rolex"
Lil Wayne - "A Milli"
Mighty Infamous feat. Big Face, Mike Smoove - "Duck Down"
Mighty Infamous - "So Ghetto 08"
Cherish - "Killa"
Annie - "I Know Yr Girlfriend Hates Me"
Solange Knowles - "Sandcastle Disco"
Jazmine Sullivan - "Need You Bad"
T2 feat Addicted - "Gonna Be Mine"
Cassie - "2 the Morning"
Ryan Leslie feat. Cassie - "Addiction"
T.I. - "No Matter What"
Erykah Badu - "Honey"/"Soldier"/"The Healer"
Keri Hilson - "Energy"
Kleerup feat. Merit something - "3AM"
Scarlett Johannson - "Falling Down"

Need to hear more of:
Ciara - "High Price" (for the record: yes, i am on this track's side)
Annie - "Songs Remind Me Of You" (and in a much less controversial ftr: yes, i am on this track's side)

Question:
Is Pilooski's edit of "Send Him Back" from 2007 or 2008? It's AWESOME. Everything I've heard from him is, actually.

Also:
Hmm, are we considering "LES Artistes" 2008? I should have put it on last year's top ten, but i zoned out.

Tape Store, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

Hercules and the Love Affair feat. Antony - "Blind"

Damn. Forgot that one. Blind is a fantastic song. I like Antony far more when he's collaborating with others on more upbeat material.

― curmudgeon, Saturday, November 1, 2008 2:17 AM (3 hours ago)

i see what you're saying, but that's not all i listen to. it definitely makes up the majority, though (i don't see a problem with this). then again, there isn't an "umbrella" yet this year (that i've heard at least), which is one of the best songs of the decade imo.

Kevin Keller, Saturday, 1 November 2008 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

Okay... 2008
No Age "Teen Creeps"
Hot Chip "We're Looking For A Lot Of Love"
Holy Ghost! "Hold On"
Estelle "American Boy"
Vampire Weekend "A-Punk"
The Mars Volta "Goliath"
Black Moth Super Rainbow "Zodiac Girls"
Wolf Parade "Soldier's Grin"
Of Montreal "Id Engager"
The Sword "Fire Lances Of The Ancient Zypherians"

...compared to 2007...
Ne-Yo "Because Of You"
Yo Majesty "Club Action" (Yo! EP version)
Simian Mobile Disco "I Believe"
Radiohead "15 Step"
Justin Timberlake "Until The End Of Time (Remix)"
Studio "Origin"
Pinback "From Nothing To Nowhere"
DJ Unk f/ Andre 3000 "Walk It Out (Remix)"
Modest Mouse "Missed The Boat"
Spoon "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb"

Okay, 2008 is def a step down.. partially because there's virtually no top 40 I've been enjoying this year. Usually that's one aspect that will bring overall quality rating up or down for me.. But in comparison with what preceded, every year since 2005 has gradually gotten worse, and I'm fairly sure that right now is as bad as it gets. I have yet to hear a single remarkable release, single or album, that's been released in 2008. I keep getting pumped for all these forthcoming releases, and they all turn out to be more of the same shit. I'll hear or read about something that's been gaining attention, and it turns out to be more of the same shit. The state of the world right now is suggesting that this will not last much longer, so hopefully there is light coming soon.

billstevejim, Saturday, 1 November 2008 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, for me, 2007 was a pretty memorable year, both mainstream and underground.

Kevin Keller, Saturday, 1 November 2008 06:29 (seventeen years ago)

People who make definitive statements like "this year sucks" almost always have bad taste in music anyways, and their way of thinking about their taste in music even worse.

I think even on the level of genre it's hard to make these calls - was this a good year for hip hop or a bad year for hip hop? Maybe it was a good/bad year for hip-hop-you-like.

I would confidently say that this year has been a bad year for commercial dance, in the sense that the dance music that mostly charted was bad and the stuff that theoretically is both good and populist doesn't have a big enough profile (yet) to chart. But we're talking about a fairly limited claim here, which mostly boils down to "I'm over 'brazen' post-post-electro-house tedium."

Tim F, Saturday, 1 November 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)

well thank god no one said "this year sucks", then, right?

Kevin Keller, Saturday, 1 November 2008 07:19 (seventeen years ago)

Referring to t_g's general point, not you specifically. But it's not like you're distinguishing yourself in this thread.

I have less confidence in my singles list than pretty much any year, ever; it's a mess. I never hear the radio anymore, I don't download anything unless I have to review it somewhere and I have no choice, so it's really hard to hear any singles as singles, which is pretty much what I require in my head. My song of the year, by far, would be "High Cost of Living" by Jamey Johnson, which (1) isn't a single and (2) is also on my favorite album the year, which would probably disqualify it for my singles list even if it was a single. That said, here are 25 singles (in vaguely descending order of preference) that I'm more or less considering:

Miley Cyrus – “See You Again”
Phil Vassar – “Love Is a Beautiful Thing”
Sister Sin – “One Out Of Ten”
Buraka Som Sistema featuring Pongolove – “Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)”
V.I.C. – “Wobble”
Cyndi Lauper – “Into The Nightlife”
Kid Sister featuring David Banner – “Family Reunion”
Sway featuring $tush – “F Ur X”
Scooter – “The Question Is What Is The Question”
Arcade Lover – “Fantasy Lines”
Alphabet – “Boyfriend (Pete Hammond Remix)”
Early Man – “Sinking The Blade” (lead song on 4-song EP, therefore a single by definition in my book)
Alphabeat – “Fascination”
Blackout Crew – “Put A Donk On It”
M.I.A. – “Paper Planes”
Ashlee Simpson – “Outta My Head”
Kid Rock – “All Summer Long”
Runrig – “Clash Of The Ash”
Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons – “Beggin’ (Piloski Edit)”
The Knux – “Cappucino”
Prima J – “Rock Star”
Ashlee Simpson – “Little Miss Obsessive”
Ryan Shaw – “Do The 45”
Vein featuring Pitbull –“Get Up Stand Up”
Hot Stylz Featuring Young Joc – “Lookin’ Boy”

And four more songs that I'm pretty sure aren't singles, but would be in the running if they were singles, so if anybody knows otherwise, please let me know:

Daveigh Chase – "The Happiest Girl In the Whole U.S.A."
Maria Daniela Y Su Sonido Lasser – Duri Duri"
The Swear – “Chicago”
Kathleen Edwards – “I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory”

most of the lists posted after mine are only reminding me of songs i missed out of my list, not helping me trim it down at all...

Kathleen Edwards – “I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory”

Great song. Wikipedia lists it as a single (In Canada maybe?)

> the meat puppets - on the rise

Was released in July of 2007; the Puppets, sadly, had no releases in 2008.

But while we're on the subject, http://archive.wfpk.org/LiveLunch/20080314LL-meatpuppets.mp3 is definitely worth a listen.

who said these songs have to be singles? (x-post)

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 1 November 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

i see what you're saying, but that's not all i listen to. it definitely makes up the majority, though (i don't see a problem with this). then again, there isn't an "umbrella" yet this year (that i've heard at least), which is one of the best songs of the decade imo.

I forgot to put "With You" on my list. That's top 50 for sure. "Forever" would be top 100. But the best Chris Brown related thing I've heard recently is "Dreamer", which is the awesome "Don't Stop Believing"-style inspirational b-side to his duet with Keri Hilson.

The Kath Edwards is definitely a single - stumbled across the video on Yootoob a couple weeks ago. It is also very definitely year-end material.

I ain't got the foggiest what my list will be - since I've not written regularly anywhere, it feels like there's gonna be tons of stuff missing. I think I may have fallen into a hole sometime around March and not emerged until mid-September.

'No Air' ftw, is what I think I'm trying to say here.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 2 November 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

'a black man in space' and 'with you' YES!

crucial differences between 'with you' and oasis - sweet lyrics which make sense, a singer who is not a punchable twat

haha i thought 'dreamer' was an olympics song? my copy's tagged as "2008 olympics" anyway, and it suits the song to the ground.

my favourite item from the similarly ubiquitous rihanna is also a random b-side/bonus track (i don't even know which countries, not this one) - 'haunted' is this amazingly claustrophobic ballad w/distinct rebecca undertones.

also i urge anyone who loves 'a black man in space' to check out the ame remix of etienne jaumet's 'repeat again after me' - spooky ascending melody, messy saxophone climax.
