As adjunct to the ongoing bossa thread. The new reissue of Elis Regina and Tom Jobim's classic '74 Elis & Tom amounts to a different record. Whole intros that were included on the '90 reissue gone, instruments taken drastically out of the mix...stuff like that. No liners explaining what the fuck is going on. Puzzling, to say the least; what is Verve thinking? Equivalent to reissuing, say,Pretzel Logic (same year) in a totally different form and not saying anything about it. So, anyone know what is going on here? Was the new edition the way the LP first appeared, or what?

Sounds crepey.

I'm trying to imagine this: the musical intro to, say, "Corcovado" is cut short and they basically start singing right off the bat, is that it?

i imagine they play the first two bars, then there's like a turntablist "scratching sound," then it goes into the singing

Maybe João Gilberto owned the rights to those parts and his lawyers made Verve remove them.

What?!! This is sacrilege!

it's substantially different. listening to the new version of "Triste" right now, and the flutes you hear on the '90 reissue are totally gone. the electric piano parts on "Brigas, Nuncas Mais" are gone, and the song sounds totally different. the guitar intro for "Photograph" (it sounds like "I'll Be Home for Christmas") is gone, as is the slow, almost rubato section that leads into the faster part (with an eletric piano part). so the new version starts at about 1 minute into the previous; and I think it might even be a different take. some of the songs aren't substantially different, and the mastering is way more forceful. it's kind of a more spare, swinging album in this version.
it's a mystery on Verve's part--uh, you reissue this record and then don't bother to indicate anywhere that it's really quite different? no liners of any kind.

Just saw the new film doc Elis and Tom and it has some great footage of Elis Regina and Tom Jobim recording the album, plus interviews with the musicians and engineers from the record, and interviews with others associated with the album plus Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Brazilian journalists and the New York Times Jon Pareles. But the movie is a bit disjointed and doesn't give enough background on Elis and Tom, or enough details on the various songs from the album. But if you're a fan of the album you will still get something out of it. I am not quite as harsh on it as the reviewer for Film Threat. I found it fascinating how the film depicted the creative process at work. Also, it was very interesting how Regina grew to have a grudging respect for Jobim, and how Jobim eventually accepted the pianist/arranger who played on the album plus the occasional use of an electric bass and Fender Rhodes rather than just acoustic instruments. Regina's depression and death at a young age also lent the film a very melancholy aspect, although it is gratifying to see her smile and hug musicians when the songs came together.

Y’all should see the Elis & Tom doc anyway despite its flaws if you can. I think it’s just at film fests and some art film theaters now

I guess this Elis and Tom doc hasn't gotten much distribution...

who is the guy talking in english the trailer? one of the most odious tropes of all time, some random self-important man proclaims this or that is an important or essential album and we're supposed to think, "oh okay, so this is important music"
it's honestly so cool that they have this footage but as with most music docs i wish they wouldn't let the music critics near it
