What are the songs you've put on mixtapes most over the years? Do you have a set of staples that seem to get included almost every time you make a mixtape? Would a mixtape made entirely of these staples be your ultimate mixtape?
Tell me about your mixtape staples. What are they, and why?

Lush - "Stray" was my staple opener of Side B. It fulfills the same function as it did on the album - deftly bringing the listener from silence to a low murmur to a wall of noise in under 2 minutes, with an open enough ending to segue into anything afterwards. I could have used this song for side A as well, but I usually reserved that for inept attempts at audio pastiche.
Staples Singers - "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" I did not discover the Staples Singers until I heard this on Kurt Loder's iTunes celebrity playlist. I used it for a mix CD exchange that I did with some friends a few years back. That Christmas, someone gave me a mix with this on it as well, so I decided I might as well just keep using it. It's a great song.
i don't think that a mixtape made entirely of staples would be as good. It would start sounding stale. You need some random filler to keep things fresh.

Depends on who the tape is for, though I find myself wanting to put something by Rose Tattoo in nearly every one.

I've certainly put the BoC and Can tracks on more than one mix. And the PJ Harvey track once as well, I think.
If I had to pick my most-used staples:
Nightsong - Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft Don't Let Me Down - Charlotte Dada I Just Can't Help Believing - Elvis Presley Matadjem Yinmixian - Tinariwen Shake Some Action - Flaming Groovies Goin' Back - Dusty Springfield If It Feels Good, Do It - Della Reese The Only Way Is Up - Otis Clay
