POLL: Best Track on The Monkees' "More of the Monkees"

Before you press that button for "I'm a Believer", consider:

there's the gorgeous "Sometime in the Morning" (perhaps Dolenz' best vocal performance?), the stompin' "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)" (that chorus...perhaps Jones' most forceful vocal performance?), and the beautiful country-rock cum percussion-fest of Nesmith's "Kind of Girl I could Love". Hell, you might even like "Laugh" a lot more than the liner notes do.

For me, I think it's gotta be "Sometime in the Morning"

Funnily enough, I just got an (LP) copy of this yestarday.

It's all about the Stepping Stone. Of Course.

Mark G, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

"She" by a million miles.

Pancakes Hackman, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

yestarday!

all my troubles seemed so far awoy!

Mark G, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

It's funny, I've always thought "Stepping Stone" kind of overrated. "Words" I liked when I was little and watched the t.v. show...not so much nowadays.

Joe, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

This is kind of tricky. At first I thought 'Look Out', no question, but I love 'Your Auntie Grizelda'.

aldo, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

"stepping stone" wins any poll it appears in. not overrated at all.

"Steppin' Stone." One of my favorite albums when a kid. But, boy, there's some genuine crap on it, from the JC Penney fashion to "The Day We Fall In Love." I bet just thinking about that one gives Davey Jones the shakes.

Gorge, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

I've said it before, but when Peter Tork (?) hollers "Go!" in "Stepping Stone" he could totally be the Iggy of "Fun House".

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

This is perhaps their weakest album, so for me this is "I'm a Believer".

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

Geir, you must not have heard Changes.

I went with "Sometime in the Morning" but want to mention the forgotten "Hold On Girl." Quirky instrumentation!

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 10 July 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, Joseph, I have a CD of Changes on my desk. I thought I wanted to hear "I Love You Better," but after I played it I wasn't so sure.

This isn't a very good album... even though it has at least seven great songs on it! And stop including bonus tracks in polls, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!! "Steppin' Stone" for me.

Tom D., Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, grrrrrrrr!!!1

Seconded! These Monkees polls appear to all have happened while I was on holiday - would certainly have voted "Grizelda" although objectively "Stepping Stone" and "Believer" are better songs.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 February 2012 06:34 (fourteen years ago)

most of the time I find the Monkees either insufficiently weird or insufficiently pop - they tried to split the difference between cynical commercialism/pop professionalism and goofball psychedelia and ended up not fully committing to either. I've tried to really get into them and there's definitely stuff I like, but a lot of it is very half-baked.

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 February 2012 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

that being said Your Auntie Grizelda is still awesome

When Love Comes POLLING at Your Door

timellison, Thursday, 15 March 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

All the big name songwriting contributors - Boyce & Hart, Carole Bayer Sager and Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Goffin and King, and Nesmith himself have knockouts on this.

timellison, Thursday, 15 March 2012 05:26 (thirteen years ago)

Saw an episode tonight that featured ''Look Out,'' never really noticed how fiery it was, easily as much oomph as ''Stepping Stone,'' which is MAYbe overrated but certainly not by much. Would still have voted Grizelda though.
