If you haven't heard it for a while, it doesn't seem so bad. But if you heard it again right now... http://youtube.com/watch?v=aD_vJRatx-A ...you'll find as I did that your teeth start to itch before you're even 30 seconds through it because it's so bad. Maybe not the worst song ever, but still up there...
― snoball, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
Peaches covered the song in 2006, altering the lyrics humorously and changing the title to "My Dumps".
Alanis Morissette covered the song in 2007, seemingly as an April Fools' Day prank, although she has not confirmed this.[6] In contrast to the original "My Humps", Morissette's cover is performed slowly and in the style of a ballad, with only a piano accompanying the vocal. On April 2, a video in which Morissette parodies Fergie's dancing moves in the original "My Humps" music video was added to the website YouTube. By April 3, the video was the most viewed on Technorati,[7] and it was viewed 4 million times six days later.[6] The Associated Press wrote that Morissette's "quiet, somber version only highlights the ridiculousness of Fergie's original lyrics".[8] The video has been hosted on Morissette's official website. TIME stated that the parody proved that Morissette "understands" irony, in reference to her hit single, Ironic. On April 15, Fergie confirmed to E! News that she thought that the parody was "hilarious", and "genius". Fergie also said that she sent Alanis a cake in the shape of a "derrière".
American Greetings parodied the song in their Christmas e-card, "Three Wise Camels", in which the camels of the Three Wise Men rap about the gifts awaiting baby Jesus, which are sitting on their humps.
Afroman parodied the song for his album "Waiting to Inhale" entitled "My Chunc" where he raps about his genitals.
Peaches then covered the Alanis Morissette parody, changing the title again to "My Dumps". This version combines Peaches' original "My Dumps" lyrics with Alanis' melody.
Sketch-comedy show MADtv did a parody titled "My Slump" that featured George W. Bush.

snoball is correct. It is a ROTTEN track, def one of the worst singles I've ever heard.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)
I mean, the backing is sort of half-decent, maybe. What makes it so bad is the singer's HORRIBLE whiny voice, the embarrasing stupid lyrics and the "milky milky riight" bit. It's horrible, still.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
The backing is all sample, though, making My Humps essentially an unwanted downgrade.

― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)
My Humps is the best black eyed peas song, because it's honest in its total soullessness. There's no pretensions to hip-hop, no earnestness whatsoever, just blatant chart ambition.
― G00blar, Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)
The backing track sounds like a ringtone already, and there seems to be an almost deliberate attempt to make the lyrics a) nonsensical, and b) non rhyming.
― snoball, Thursday, 10 July 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

^^^exactly!^^^ xpost
― G00blar, Thursday, 10 July 2008 10:09 (seventeen years ago)
I find the lyrics offensive, not because of the materialism that they represent, but because they put across such a tiny worldview. There's a whole world out there, but all that matters to the performers is jumping around in a dingy basement club dressed like an aerobics instructor wearing platinum and diamond jewellery that's so gaudy it looks like it's made of plastic. Or standing around trying to affect some kind of badass pimp/gangsta look when really the closest you've got to crime is shoplifting sweets from the newsagents when you were six. If you're going to wear a watch that costs $10,000, get one that doesn't look like it came free with eight tokens from a cornflakes packet. And putting metallised cardboard pie plates on your hubcaps does not make you look like Iceberg Slim.
― snoball, Thursday, 10 July 2008 10:19 (seventeen years ago)
But you could say this about every other late BEP single! The reason why My Humps works is because it suggests that perhaps the band knows that they're ridiculous!
Do the lyrics "my humps my humps my humps, my lovely lady lumps" suggest "affecting some kind of badass pimp/gangsta look"???
― G00blar, Thursday, 10 July 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)
The song isn't a parody, so their knowing that they're ridiculous doesn't excuse them. The lyrics go on and on about D&G, LV, and bling-blah-de-bling, but it's the video that suggests the "badass pimp/gangsta look". Sorry about that, in my previous post I got caught up in slagging off Will.I.Am.

The song isn't a parody, so their knowing that they're ridiculous doesn't excuse them.
You talk like there's only two types of songs, Weird Al parodies and 'regular' songs, in which there is not a trace of irony, parodic intent, or (gasp!) humor. Parody is not a genre regulated by an on/off switch; it is a strategy, one of many in an art-maker's arsenel.
What really drives me nuts about the nature of opposition to this song is the common assumption that pop artists (and people of color in particular) aren't self-aware. Those simpletons in Black Eyed Peas couldn't possibly be making fun of themselves (and pop music in general); they *do* love bling!
― G00blar, Thursday, 10 July 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago)
sorry for challopian tubes
― G00blar, Thursday, 10 July 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)
The song can be interpreted as a parody, but I don't think they set out to make it as one. I don't assume that pop stars aren't self aware - most are. BEP are certainly aware of the ridiculousness of their image, but instead of using it to make humorous comment, they are pulling a Stones' Satanic Majesties' Request style "let's give people what we think they want", which comes down to them treating the audience as simpletons.
― snoball, Thursday, 10 July 2008 11:43 (seventeen years ago)
like while they were recording it they were like "yeah nigga, this song is sex"
If someone fires up Rock 'N' Roll Comics again, this NEEDS to be a very prominent panel in the Black Eyed Peas entry.
