I still lol at Lucas's video when he keeps turning around from his little mixing board and saying "Whatever bubbles bubbles up!" all fruity.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 12 July 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

SoHo, "Hot Music"

Eric H., Saturday, 12 July 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

But, yeah, "Cantaloop."

Eric H., Saturday, 12 July 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

A random note about each:

My uncle loved "Cantaloop". This is back before he went crazy.

When I was a kid, I used to think "Lucas With the Lid Off" and "Here Comes the Hotstepper" were by the same person.

I go with Lucas.

Gondry! I had no idea

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 12 July 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

There's parts of Be Kind Rewind that are like straight out of "Lucas With The Lid Off"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 12 July 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

Lucas because of the video, but was it really all shot in one take?

Gondry calls this video "a big turn for me, because it was so challenging. Nobody really believed - even me - that we could pull that off when we made it after 17 takes, because it was really done all in-camera in one shot. There is no post-production at all. I think this one really gave me a lot of attention."

ILX System, Sunday, 13 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

The jazz-sampling elements of the 2 songs in question do not appear (as heavily) in any of the 3rd party candidates.. so sonically-speaking I don't see how they qualify.

billstevejim, Monday, 14 July 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

Both songs are kinda gay.. but sorta guilty pleasures for me.

billstevejim, Monday, 14 July 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

I would have gone with "Cantaloop" at the time, but "Lucas With The Lid Off" has worn much, much better.

I hate to say it, but we'll probably never hear anything this original and, yes, uplifting coming from the hip-hop/rap genre ever again.
Nobody has the creativity anymore to make a great song like this, it's all about throwing shitty under written and over produced garbage (songs) to the money wielding brain cell deprived comsumers. It kinda pisses me off. But every once in a while a star, like lucas for example, does shine on us. Not to often though.

"Lucas' father, Paul Secon, is perhaps best known as the founder of Pottery Barn."

While it inarguably had a brilliant video, I can't imagine listening to "Lucas With the Lid Off" now without getting insanely annoyed. "Cantaloop" -- though not without its own annoying elements ("biddy biddy bop"), isn't quite as grating.

The PBS station in Idaho, for years, wld broadast their list of local affiliates over sillhouettes of some kids doing the Running Man to 'Cantaloop.'

It is like what would happen if Brick had shown up in the '90s.

fillibustar superstar! (Abbott), Monday, 4 May 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

xp: Interesting, considering that the PBS station in Seattle seemed to have a severe "Canteloupe Island" fetish.

I have nothing to confess. I was merely exclaiming at the visual invocation of Buck Rogers' diminutive robotic sidekick

The appeal of the song and (especially) the video was lost on me at the time. This video! Kinda makes me nostalgic for the days when major labels still had oodles of stupid money to hire someone like Gondry to shoot a video for a prospective one-hit wonder

Wimmels, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 15:16 (nine years ago)

It took this thread to remind me of a Lucas song that was usually summoned into the CD player of my 1992 Toyota Tercel by a fellow stoner going, "uh play that song with the rappers in different languages."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcJi8hsfCnM

It was all very Carmen Sandiego.

Devilock, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 15:35 (nine years ago)

thank god I embedded a video with no video. One of these days I will remember which url to use.

akm, Monday, 13 April 2020 14:39 (five years ago)

wonder if this is a generational marker -- millennials mostly going for Lucas vs. Gen X and older going for Cantaloop?

Half-assed theories here

sarahell, Monday, 13 April 2020 14:46 (five years ago)

some thoughts:

at the time, this would have been 'cantaloop' without hesitation. all the annoying preppy kids liked lucas and i wasn't down with that shit.

'cantaloop' was my gateway to empyrean isles. can't be too upset about that.

just looked both artists up on discogs and was surprised to learn that lucas had more than one album and that it actually preceded his hit. absolutely shocked to learn that us3 has (so far) released nine albums.

in retrospect, both of these acts seem embarrassingly gimmicky.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 13 April 2020 14:48 (five years ago)

I was a DJ at an alt-rock station when these came out: the station played Cantaloop in heavy rotation

sarahell, Monday, 13 April 2020 14:51 (five years ago)

I was just thinking about all the other hip-hop acts that made their way onto alternative radio at this time: Digable Planets, MC 900 Ft Jesus, Basehead, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Arrested Development... I really considered myself quite the rap fan for a minute!

Maybe. I've already flipped my own opinion as reflected upthread.

Vegemite Is My Grrl (Eric H.), Monday, 13 April 2020 15:03 (five years ago)

I would definitely vote Cantaloop. The other one feels more like a novelty song and it’s somewhat annoying. I haven’t watched the videos for either.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 13 April 2020 16:47 (five years ago)

On spotify “Lucas with the Lid Off” is mostly a forgotten one hit wonder compared to Cantaloop.

Lucas has 200k listens vs Cantaloop with 15.6 million.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 13 April 2020 16:54 (five years ago)

Never heard of Lucas but it's the better song. Cantaloop always had the taint of a novelty song for me, and it's more poppy.

I don't remember Lucas being a very prominent hit in the UK compared to Cantaloop?

lucas with the lid off i ONLY ever heard via the video (and I swear I only saw that twice in those days, but I remember both times pretty clearly which is a feat considering I was drunk most of that year). cantaloop of course was omnipresent.
