POO: CDs from an abandoned high school CD binder

Found a binder of CDs that hadn't been opened since Nov. 2000 (give or take - I know there are a couple of CDs I bought at Warped Tour that year). These were the CDs that even then I didn't like enough to keep the jewel cases.

Still a few in here I wouldn't mind hearing again (and some I've re-purchased).

The Reverend Horton Heat – It’s Martini Time
this is the point where I knew I should just stop by RHH CDs - but I lasted for one (Spend A Night In The Box?)

The Chieftains – The Bells of Dublin
one great great song w/ Elvis Costello

Sheryl Crow – Tuesday Night Music Club
re-purchased later

The Graduates – Up In Downtown
they did an in-store at the one okay CD store in my town - I think they actually tried to straddle ska and swing

Blur – Blur
always hated this except for Song 2

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Devil’s Night Out
god, I was a fucking Bosstones completist
The Shit Factory – Discs 1-6
first '77 punk-rock comp I ever bought, age 13-14, at Best Buy

Pietasters – oolooloo
at least it's not the Cherry Popping Daddies, I guess

Bob Marley and the Wailers – Babylon By Bus
don't think I've ever actually listened to this

Rob Zombie – Hellbilly Deluxe
senior year lunches were spent blasting this or the Office Space soundtrack while my friend Robbie drove like a bastard across town so we could eat cheap Arby's

MXPX – Teenage Politics
first not-family concert I ever went to, probably doesn't measure up to my memory

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Question The Answers
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – More Noise And Other Disturbances
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Ska-Core, The Devil And More
oh dear god

Five Iron Frenzy – Upbeats and Beatdowns
Christian ska-punk.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication
"Scar Tissue" still worth whatever I paid for this used

The Amazing Royal Crowns – S/T
god I'm glad my greaser phase was short-lived

Suicide Machines – Destruction By Definition
probably still awesome

Long Beach Dub All-Stars – Right Back
better than Sublime, at least

BB King/Eric Clapton, Riding With The King
ugh

milo z, Saturday, 12 July 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

meant to leave out NIrvana and Sonic Youth, I suspect they'll tip the scales a bit

milo z, Saturday, 12 July 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

as i scrolled down, i could sense the cake album approaching

mookieproof, Saturday, 12 July 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

back then i would have gone with op ivy, now, enema of the state

max, Saturday, 12 July 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

milo z, Saturday, 12 July 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

yeah really it's hard to imagine anything but Daydream Nation or maybe Babylon by Bus winning.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

I totally wussed out: Nirvana, Doors, SY, Rancid, Costello,Everclear, Beastie Boys, This Are Two Tone---the Black Crowes and prob everything on here would be good for driving like a bastard across town to eat cheap Arby's--except maybe the Brubeck, how was that?! And what was on Mashin' Up The Nation, and Songs In The Key of X, was that the one with a William Burroughs track?

dow, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah the King/Clapton would not be good for driving like a bastard.

dow, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Five Iron Frenzy – Upbeats and Beatdowns
Christian ska-punk.

lol you were a Bosstones completist I owned Five Iron b-sides & bootlegs.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 13 July 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

obviously Daydream Nation, but it'll receive enough votes to win already so i voted for REM - Up, which is pretty underrated i think.

stephen, Sunday, 13 July 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

No Control is great too so I voted for that one.

StanM, Sunday, 13 July 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

hello nasty.

Creeztophair, Sunday, 13 July 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

The Brubeck is OK, it's all from Peanuts specials I think
Mashin Up The Nation - standard anonymous ska - Bosstones, Bim Skala Bim, etc.
Songs In The Key of X - yeah, Burroughs w/ REM, Elvis Costello, Frank Black, really did not get this when I bought it (at Target!) but I was a huge X-Files nerd

milo z, Sunday, 13 July 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't there like a Key Of X remix collection? Anyway I'll prob get the first volume some time (and the second, if there is one)

dow, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

Saturday Morning Cartoons

was this the comp that had the ramones spiderman themesong on it? i bought that in 6th grade after i saw an ad for it in WIZARD MAGAZINE

and what, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

Okay where is the Jamiroquai?

Abbott, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

Blink 182 – Enema of the State

J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

Saturday Morning Cartoons has the Ramones, Juliana Hatfield, the Butthole Surfers, Helmet, Liz Phair

Okay where is the Jamiroquai?

I think I feel insulted.

milo z, Monday, 14 July 2008 05:17 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I have that Saturday Morning Cartoons comp anymore but I quite liked it. Even the Sublime track

DJ Mencap, Monday, 14 July 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

ooooh, the isaak. he angry. frickin weird video for 'go walking down there'.

yungblut, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

daydream nation or get happy

electricsound, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 05:12 (seventeen years ago)

lol you were a Bosstones completist

He didn't have "Don't Know How to Party"

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

haha, funny you mentioned Nirvana and Sonic Youth because those were the first two albums to jump out for me.

I'm still voting Nirvana, I'm not a Sonic Youth fan but I know Daydream Nation is damn popular.

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

babylon by bus is a really great live record brah

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

The Suicide Machines – Battle Hymns

first LP I ever owned (and still do, who's going to buy this POS) - I accidentally ordered it instead of the CD from Newbury Comics when they were the only place I knew of selling music on the Internet

milo z, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

Get Happy!! now, but in high school I was all about the Stubborn All Stars. I think I'll be the lone vote for that.

James, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

If Daydream Nation beat everything on Cobain's list, it should win this one in a stroll.

myndbloom, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

reverend horton heat and sy

Zeno, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

Voted "Blur". They have made better albums, but there are enough good tracks on that one to make it a solid effort too (their last solid effort in fact)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

Harvey Danger - for Flagpole sitta.
excellent tune and words

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

no really. i love that song.

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

Bad Religion, No Control. classic.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 20 July 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

I wish you'd left those off Milo, voted SY before I noticed Up which is a really good record

Niles Caulder, Sunday, 20 July 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

stephen, Monday, 21 July 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

Five Iron Frenzy – Our Newest Album Ever 1

this might have been me but i'm not sure

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 21 July 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

I think I forgot to vote. Probably would have gone for Destruction By Definition

milo z, Monday, 21 July 2008 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck Censorship

Forgot this one - it has a hilarious/awesome Lou Reed track, "Sex With Your Parents"

I was thinking of things that I hate to do
Sex with your parents
Things you do to me or I do to you, baby
Sex with your parents

Something fatter or uglier than rush rambo
Something more disgusting than robert dole
Something pink that climbs out of a hole
And there it was - sex with your parents

I was getting so sick of this right wing republican shit
These ugly old man scared of young tit and dick
So I try to think of something that made me sick
And there it was - sex with your parents

Now these old f**ks can steal all they want
And they can go and pass laws saying you can't say what you want
And you can't look at this and you can't look at that
And you can't smoke this and you can't snort that
And me baby - I got statistics - I got stats
These people have been to bed with their parents

Now I know you're shocked but hang and have a brew
If you think about it for a minute you know that it's true
They're ashamed and repelled and they don't know what to do
They've had sex with their parents
When they looked into their lovers eyes they saw - mom
In the name of the family values we must ask whose family
In the name of the family values we must ask - senator

It's has been reported that you have had
Illegal congress with your mother, - sex with your parents
Ah, senator
An illegal congress by proxy is a
Pigeon by any other name, - sex with your parents

Senators you polish a turd
Here in the big city we got a word
For those who would bed their beloved big bird
And make a mockery of our freedoms
Ah, without even using a condom
Without even saying "no"
By God we have a name for people like that
It's - hey motherf**ker

milo z, Monday, 21 July 2008 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

I would be perfectly happy to hear all of the following today, although I think I would probably get 1/3 of the way through all the songs and then hit Skip to the next thing: Nirvana, Beasties, Ben Folds Five, Songs in the Key of X, Enema of the State, POTUSA, Colour and the Shape, MXPX, and Smash. Mellon Collie I still actually listen to with some frequency.

That first No Doubt CD is kind of a wasteland if I remember right - when the bleating junior high social critique of "Trapped In A Box" is your standout track you know you're in trouble.

Also, I still can't believe that STP album was actually called "Shangri-La-Dee-Da." It might tie with "Honkin' On Bobo" for the worst major label rock CD title of the last fifteen years. At the time my friend PJ proferred as an alternative "STP?-Blah-Blah-Blah" which still makes me giggle.
