Their cover of "Wichita Lineman"

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Sunday, 13 July 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

A perplexing omission to be sure. Probably a rights issue. I remember picking up a Gladys Knight greatest hits and wondering what they hell happened to "Midnight Train to Georgia."

Oilyrags, Sunday, 13 July 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

The backbeat to "Hey Pocky A-Way" is incredible, one of the funkiest things in existence. So that one.

Tuomas, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

I know the main reason for their greatness was how tight all four played together, but if there's one element that gave them the edge over almost every other soul/funk band, it's Zigaboo Modeliste's drumming.

Tuomas, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

too hard to choose

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

No "Just Kissed My Baby," no justice.

ellaguru, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

ellaguru OTM.

I hate to go with the obvious and all, but "Cissy Strut" is the first thing to pop into my brain when I hear the term "funk music."

Pillbox, Monday, 14 July 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

Or any funky term for that matter.

Pillbox, Monday, 14 July 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

But not a funky worm, because that would be a different song.

Pillbox, Monday, 14 July 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

complaints that I should have included classics that are NOT on the Rhino Anthology otm

Oilyrags, Monday, 14 July 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

voted "hey pocky a-way" because it's a straight up mardi gras indians jam, but i love it all.

Jordan, Monday, 14 July 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'd vote 6v6 la, if it was there. And I'm gonna put some hurt on you, even though it is so wrong.

Jamie T Smith, Monday, 14 July 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

i ended up voting for People Say

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 14 July 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

Impossible to choose. About 13 years ago my cousin, when he was in hs, was a great drummer. I gave him a tape with James Brown, mostly featuring I think Clyde Stubblefield on one side, and the Meters with Zigaboo on the other. He actually learned to play 'em! Walking around San Francisco in 1996 I saw that Zigaboo and his band were playing at this little shack near Fisherman's Wharf. I went back that night, and though it was no Meters, it was a good show. I met Zig after and told him about the tape and my cousin, and he gave me his drumsticks to give him! I think he might still be living in Oakland. Wiki says he put out a solo album in 2000.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

it's funny, zigaboo was really on some next-level shit translating second-line & indian rhythms to the drumset, but he's most drummers only real exposure to new orleans feel. which is cool, but it's kind of like starting with john coltrane without going back.

Jordan, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

i'd only vote for it to be difficult, but their version of witchita lineman's really great. it's just this kind of trembly guitar high note, until it does this little deviation that makes you realise what song they're playing. and from then it's some pretty smooth meterisation.

schlump, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

"Tippi-Toes" is my favourite

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

No, Hand Clapping Song? It's gets my vote anyway. It's the track that got me to seek them out.
