Mute has been bought by EMI

I just got information that Daniel Miller has sold Mute to EMI. It's no longer the longest running indie label. Miller will still be in control of Mute but knowing how these majors are they're eventually going to be the last word in deciding who stays or goes. I wonder if artists like Pan Sonic, Barry Adamson and Diamanda Galas will be affected by this.

10th May 2002

LONDON, 10 MAY 2002 -- EMI Recorded Music has acquired Mute, one of Europe’s leading independent record companies, extending an existing licensing relationship that Mute has had with EMI’s Virgin Records for over 15 years.

Founded in London in 1978 by Daniel Miller, Mute has consistently been at the forefront of artist development with an artist roster that includes Moby and Depeche Mode - whose last albums sold 8 million and 2 million each respectively - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Goldfrapp. The acquisition includes Mute’s catalogue and its operations in the UK, US and Germany.

Miller, executive chairman of Mute, will continue to be responsible for all of the company’s global activities.

Commenting on the agreement, Alain Levy, EMI Recorded Music’s chairman and CEO said: “It’s a great sign of confidence that Daniel Miller has decided to associate his future with EMI. Daniel is one of the most respected finders and nurturers of talent in the industry and we’re incredibly proud to be strengthening the relationship.”

The new agreement was initiated by EMI Recorded Music’s chairman and CEO of Continental Europe, Emmanuel de Buretel. He said: “This deal is a natural progression of our relationship with Mute. I believe in the independent sector. It provides the business with an immense wealth of new talent. It’s a source of new musical trends and an integral part of the industry’s future.”

EMI will pay £23 million for Mute, plus up to £19 million of potential performance-related payments, over a period of four years.

That's the best line I've seen on ILM in ages...

Distressing, if only because I just always liked the fact that Miller was out there just having fun, in his own way. Well, we shall see what the future holds.

Cool. Diamond Galas and Abdel Halim Hafez on the same label, more or less.

"So I bought it for my major label"

whatever.

These are really bad news. It´s the fucking music industry invading our world. Dome, Barry Adamson, Diamanda Galas, Pan Sonic. I´m sure they won´t be supported by EMI yuppies. Can anyone imagine "The Grey Area Of EMI"?

I'd like to remember that last April 3rd, Frank Tobey a.k.a. Fad Gadget died of heart failure. Fad Gadget was the first signing to Mute. Maybe he died in the right moment. He hasn´t had to see Mute´s final.

What's the source of this? I haven't been able to find corroboration anywhere, and you'd think this would be considered fairly big news. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places...url pliz?

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

his name's FRANK TOVEY, which may help google-corroboration, and i *think* i remember a (micro)thread about it

mark s, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

actually we had TWO, but this one has links, and more than two posts

mark s, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh oh, just in case there was misunderstanding, there's a pop-up on Mute's site about Tovey, so that's already well-confirmed. I was talking about the EMI purchase.

An intruiging move by EMI this, in the context of what happened a few months ago. Are they banking heavily on Miller's nous to help save them or something?

This is truly saddening news. Daniel Miller is one of the great figures of the story of indie labels in my lifetime, and his continuing independence -- huge success allowing personal idiosyncracy, artists with huge audiences subsidising artists with tiny ones -- was a beacon. I can't tell you how many times Miller saved Rough Trade distribution and protected other labels with his clout. He was legendary for never dropping a single artist. I'm sure that will be difficult to justify to EMI. So what now for a low- selling, yet brilliant, artist like Holger Hiller?

EMI is positioning themselves for the total mainstreaming of electronic music (re: Electro-Clash & Electro-Punk + hundreds of kids with cheap keyboards etc...) much like what has happened to Hip-Hop. The control of MUTE and its back catalog is essential for this to happen. Will probably take less than 3 years.

Late out of the gate, but under the wire: Wilco, Mould, next Neil Young release, and recent Iggy synth pop project with that guy from YAZ.

nine months pass...
just a quick note, Mute records have abandoned their independent distributor, Vital and from now on new releases will be distributed via EMI.

[Source: Chunky Records]

This goes back on their original statement that they would remain being distributed by the Independent sector.

seven years pass...

Mute has been unbought by EMI. Depeche is sticking with EMI, though.

And more specifically:

EMI Music and Mute found Daniel Miller have reached an agreement over the future of the label, which will once again be independent - albeit with a label services deal with EMI, who will also take a minority stake.
