Couldn't find this one in the archives.
I can speak for maybe 10 percent of what's been released on Important Records, most of which is fantastic. Myself, I'd say they have a pretty good hit-to-miss ratio. Still exploring what I haven't heard, though, bit by bit.
Any recommendations? Albums to hear/check out? What's their best stuff? And of course, what's overrated?

Merzbow releases are solid.

AXOLOTL - Memory Theater is gorgeous.
― Mark Rich@rdson, Monday, 14 July 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)
the last 2 Beequeen albums The Bodyshop and Sandancing are great.
― nerve_pylon, Monday, 14 July 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)
Birchville Cat Motel - Seventh Ruined Hex Astral Social Club - Neon Pibroch
I would consider these two plus the AXOLOTL to be in the same vein and all are great, exactly the kind of noisy drone I really love, where it's really intense and overdriven and mean while also sounding pretty and blissed-out at the same time.
― Mark Rich@rdson, Monday, 14 July 2008 04:08 (seventeen years ago)
the two Christina Kubisch albums they put out last year are really good as well
Axolotl yeah, didn't really love that Birchville Cat Motel though.

Doesn't really fit in with most of their catalog, but I love that Ocean record.

yay for Important!
― Dominique, Monday, 14 July 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)
important is great because they have a nice eclectic roster that seems to be unified in some way that I can't really discern other than that I like almost everything they're released. I'm a label purist in the sense that I loved 4ad and like it when the label is a hallmark of quality and aesthetic; there have been a bunch of indie labels I can think of that just seemed to put out whatever the fuck and as a result I don't think very highly of them. Important seems to put out important records; they don't all sound the same, but they've all sounded good to me.

I definitely agree, the quality/quantity ratio is very high on Important, and it does have a certain "aesthetic" to it as well.
Dominique, what can you recommend?

That Ocean album is one of the best blind purchases I have ever bought. They were selling the cd thru the list and I liked the description and bought it. Got the ltd vinyl that is a ltd ed of 50 i think with that cover

Flaherty/Corsano/Yeh is good, yeah? And I really like O True Believers by James Blackshaw, not sure if he's put out anything else on Important.
― sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)
He hasn't but he does have a new album out.
― Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)
xpost that is indeed Blackshaw's only release on Important.
― stephen, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 01:21 (seventeen years ago)
really like:
both the Pauline Oliveros reissues, particularly The Wanderer, with the ensemble pieces
the newest Acid Mothers Temple
the XBXRX album
Fe-Mail - Syklubb Fra Haelvete
most of the Hafler Trio stuff (not sure I've heard some of the later ones, but all the early ones are good)
also, haven't heard the vinyls, but all the Angels of Light and Mars stuff
and haven't heard, but the Conrad Schnitzler Trigger Trilogy cover is awesome!!!

New Ocean and new Conifer both out on Important by years end!
I like what I've heard (sadly only a relatively small sample), but they released some Kimya Dawson which is definitely a black mark from me.

I almost picked this up in my last order. Looks so pretty...

I'm kind of interested in that Fe-Mail album. Been listening a lot to Spunk lately and they are great.
― sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)
True about Kimya (WTF?), but most recently, Citay, Vanishing Voice, Grails and the Sic Alps single have all been getting tons of play here
