No more of this flowery boring Islands crap! yeah, an album that sounds more like Jim Guthrie's solo stuff (so far).

theres only a current singers/bands that I constantly look up for new material. 1.) Jim Guthrie 2.) Jim O'Rourke 3.) The Sea and Cake 4.) Tortoise 5.) Archer Prewitt 6.) Quasi 7.) Robert Wyatt 8.) King Crimson
I would look up a few others if they weren't so undependable in the past and/or they had one truly outstanding album without having a bad album streak that lasted what seems like forever.

9.) King Creosote 10.) Belle and Sebastian

wow, jim guthrie. loved his solo record "now, more than ever"
is this similar?
― cutty, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)
this is nowhere close to "noe more than ever" quality. thorburn is dreadful as usual.

His solo record "A thousand songs" is great as well (despite the obvious klunkers) - I prefer it to "now more than ever". Jim Guthrie's other solo albums are definitely not as great as though two but they had a couple real nice songs.
Yes, it looks like Human Highway has at least 50% of Guthrie's genius being put into the music. I hope the Islands guy doesn't stop him from being himself.
I'm reminded of Loose Fur where most of the songs weren't as good as Jim O'Rourke's solo stuff. So hopefully, Human Highway won't be like that. There are still a good little bit of great Loose Fur songs so I'm not too worried about the Human Highway duo. It's about time Jim Guthrie comes out with some original stuff anyways.

I remember listening to this once a week ago and thinking it a major letdown, I oughta give it a try again, (I dont have it with me).

Eh, you'd be better off trying the Dodos' Visiter (sic). A bit wordy, but a lot more creative spark, even when they're depressed.

Maybe its just me, but this Pitchfork review really doesn't seem to match the score at all.

"the sound" is still a excellent song - I think the whole album is on their myspace to preview

i liked it as well. i like a lot of the stuff thorburn does...i've still gotta hear that other project he's got...reefer. wasn't a huge fan of this year's islands LP but they did kill it in concert
― k3vin k., Monday, 24 November 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)
he's got reefer?...well then, a friend with weed is a friend indeed!
― henry s, Monday, 24 November 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)
i think it's mediocre. jim guthrie's solo stuff is much better.
