A Man and a Woman, '60s Europop

I picked up a record recently of the mid-'60s French film "A Man and a Woman" by Francais Lai and... Wow, this album is cool. It's very mid-'60s in a Euro kind of way: low tech organ sounds, lots of timpani and strings, jazzy bossa nova influences, male/female vocals kinda like the Getz/Gilberto album...

Can anyone recommend any other albums or artists which evoke a strong mid to late '60s Euro flavor? I don't mean Austin Powers soundtracks or pseudo-retro artists like The Tindersticks; I mean the original artists and albums which were released at the time. (My knowledge of '60s Europop pretty much consists of Serge Gainsbourg and the above mentioned soundtrack album.)

Thanks!

Don't know much about this myself, but check out Reel Love: Great Romantic Movie Themes. Lovely (and slightly cheesy) music from Francis Lai, Michel Legrand, Henry Mancini, and others. Also, have you heard the Lai soundtrack "Live for Life." It's in the same vein as "A Man and a Woman," a bit repetitive, but it does feature the very nice "Now You Want to be Loved" with French and English vocals. I also like Michel Legrand's "Windmills of your Mind" (as heard in "The Thomas Crown Affair" and also splendidly covered by Dusty Springfield). Anybody know of a good Legrand comp?

It's very mid-'60s in a Euro kind of way: > Wow Avant Garde Poop! We were still using the Frank then.

Pierre Barouh's Samba Saravah on the Man and a Woman ST album is gorgeous. If you like it you can try other samba/bossa efforts, such as Domingo by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa, Jazz Samba by Stan Getz, anything by Baden Powell, early Jorge Ben, Luiz Carlos Vinhas, etc.

The blog "Delicado" focuses on this stuff very often; check it out: http://www.psychedelicado.com/blog/records.php

My collection of 60s Europop with exquisite orchestral arrangements includes albums by Francoise Hardy, France Gall, Gainsbourg, Bardot, Lai and Legrand. I'd like to own more records of this type but I don't know which artists to look for. The 60s Frenchpop records that I've bought more recently (Jacques Dutronc, Pussycat, the "Wizzz" compilation) have had a harder sound similar to freakbeat and garage rock. I like these harder-edged records a lot too but I prefer the orchestral pop sound.

The best Europop record I've heard recently is "Polnareff's" by Michel Polnareff from 1971. Can anyone recommend any of his 1960s albums?

I wish I knew about Italian pop and soundtracks from the Sixties. Obviously Morricone was an important figure in this field. Which albums should I look for?
