Hah, remember when last.fm tried to make these dudes succesful?

trans am: 534 plays.

don't get me wrong. i love trans am. i'm just constantly surprised by how *much* i love trans am.

next is new order (380), which doesn't surprise me at all.

other surprises: yo la tengo (28). i don't ever remember listening to yo la tengo.

soft cell (23). is that all? i listen to soft cell all the time. don't i?

Counting the number of tracks you listen to isn't a very accurate way of measuring how much you listen to something.

How come? 15 minutes of Naked City counts for a day's worth of William Basinski on a straight track count.

Last.fm Normaliser to the rescue! Just put in your username, and it will rank your last.fm user chart according to average song length.

A lot of these chartings usually benefit bands that have songs short enough to count for last.fm but can log in 3 or 4 times more songs than even 3-minute-and-20-second pop artists.

Brainiac and Mountain Goats, for example, happen to highly benefit from this (on my playlists) because avg. song length is around 2-minutes-and-something.

Steve Reich's a big beneficiary for me too, up 29 places to 15th. Probably not fair, since my Music for 18 Musicians is split into individual tracks for each movement.

Poor Maher Shalal Hash Baz, down 31 places.

i think last.fm beta is kinda cool-- my big issue with it mostly is that it cuts off artists @ 15 so you kind of get confined to displaying someone you might've listened to a lot 3 years ago (lol fiery furnaces for me). i do think it's cool that they added tabs for 3 month/6 month/12 month becasue thats usually a better indication of what someone is listening to. putting shoutbox all the way at the bottom sux though and it reeks of them copying facebook.

I can never believe how boring my taste seems on last.fm... I think it reflects my girlfriend's taste and my buddy who checks his email on my computer's taste more than my own, but oh well it's just some big brother shit anyway.

Actually, has Last.fm made it any easier to scrobble what you listen to on your iPod? When the site first debuted, you had to sync your iPod to your computer before you listened to anything on your iTunes or else your iPod plays wouldn't register, and so I basically said eff that, because I didn't want to be that anal about it. But so now Last.fm really only shows the stuff I listen to at home, which I'd wager is no more than 20-30% of my total music-listening.

Actually, has Last.fm made it any easier to scrobble what you listen to on your iPod?

i still use iScrobbler on the mac because when i signed up for last.fm there was no support whatsoever for manually managed iPods in the official client. that might have changed, but i doubt i'll go back. seriously: if you've got a mac, iScrobbler rules -- the iPhone workaround is a little clunky at the moment (you have to fool it into thinking there's another iPod attached or it won't scrobble yr iPhone plays) but i'm confident that'll be fixed before too long.

i've used iScrobbler for years now. occasionally there's a hiccup, but no more so than with anything else.

can't comment on iPhone 'cause i live in Russia one of the only two countries in the fucking world where Apple won't sell the phone legally!!!!!!!

I have a PC and use iSproggler because it syns my iPod plays without a hitch. You do have to sync before listening to anything on iTunes though, whereas the last.fm client (thoughh extremely erratic) doesn't have this problem. Until the client scrobbles 100% of the time though, I'm sticking with iSproggler.
