release:

On August 8th, 2008 [8.8.08], Nike Sportswear will present Boredoms' 88Boadrum - an unprecedented aural and visual experience, on the same day in New York and Los Angeles.

Boredoms, the seminal Japanese noise band, will build on their legendary and lauded reputation for mesmerizing sound installations hosting 88BoaDrum - LA, on 8.8.08. Commencing at precisely 8:08 PM PST the 88-minute experience at the historic La Brea Tar Pits will feature 88 drummers selected by Boredoms and 88BoaDrum artistic director, Hisham Bharoocha of Soft Circle [formerly of Lightening Bolt, Black Dice].

88BoaDrum - NYC will take place at 8:08 PM EST in New York City, conducted on behalf of Boredoms and Nike Sportswear by Brooklyn's Gang Gang Dance. Set on the Williamsburg Waterfront, 88 drummers will perform the same 88-minute piece, newly composed by Eye of Boredoms and interpreted by Gang Gang Dance.

Each experience will be commemorated with a very special Nike Sportswear 88BoaDrum NSW Tee collection. The NSW Tee's will be hand-screened at each location with an original graphic of choice, including designs created by Eye from Boredoms. This collection will be available exclusively on 8.8.08.

88BoaDrum is the natural evolution of 77BoaDrum, one of the most talked about and critically celebrated music events of the past years. Supported by Nike Sportswear, 77BoaDrum took place in Brooklyn Bridge Park, where Boredoms and 74 hand-selected drummers from New York's underground brought life to Boredoms monumental vision through an original 77-minute composition.

Nike Sportswear presents Boredoms' 88BoaDrum will be free and open to the public. Tickets are required for entry and are available on first-come-first-served basis starting Friday 18th from www.brownpapertickets.com, Amoeba Records and LACMA (88BoaDrum - LA ) and Other Music and Sound Fix Records (88BoaDrum - NYC). Tickets are limited to one per person. For further information, www.nikesportswear.com

Nike Sportswear presents Boredoms' 88BoaDrum is produced by JellyNYC.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

so no Boredoms members in NY, and the band is at least "hosting" in LA?

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

The 7/7/07 show in Brooklyn last year was probably the best concert I've ever been to. If the drummers keep time as well as they did last year--and if Eye cranks out some ridiculous invention like the guitar necks wall that he was smashing with a trident(!)--then it's definitely worth going to.

talrose, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

so how crazy will getting tickets be for this?

if it's at the tarpits do you need tickets? it's kind of an open space, i missed ny last year did you have to pay or was it some kind of public event?

san frandisco, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

there was an elderly Japanese gentleman who was dancing over by the Wilshire side of the crowd. He was totally into it and smiled at all the passerbys.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

BTW Ian, the event was only right next to the JAPANESE PAVILLION OF LACAMA. But NYC would be better off without all those office buildings anyway.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway being able to walk around was U & K. Lots of different acoustic spots to check.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, ML Compton mentioned doing that as well -- part of me wanted to but I was more intent on sitting and chilling...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

a cute cat followed a. and me back to the car, literally. it was waiting by the car door, intent on coming home with us. we named it lacmakitty.

jeff, Sunday, 10 August 2008 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

>>I'd say this only compares to chatham or branca live, but boadrum was free and more kid friendly.

Not to take away from last night because it was pretty amazing, but I saw Branca's 100 Guitars at Disney Concert Hall last year and it was one of the greatest things I've ever experienced. The sheer number of guitarists accomplished something that only 100 guitarists could. Last night didn't really need 88 drummers.

pgwp, Sunday, 10 August 2008 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

seeing chatham's 200 gtrs on friday so I will compare and contrast

That was totally fucking sweet even though I didn't get together with any of the people who I knew who said they'd meet me there.

Though if Ned took those shots, I think he was about ten feet to the left of us.

It was not nearly as crowded as I feared, though I was annoyed at how many people came there and just wanted to chit chat through the whole fucking set, including one dude who had a volunteer badge and some chick who was up for a promotion and "Like, I totally deserve it." I felt like such an old man telling people to shut up, but Christ, during that tickety-tockety quiet bit, I wanted to hear the music, not the 15-year-old dollar-store Adrock behind me.

I eat cannibals, Sunday, 10 August 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

Ah, I'm a bit pissed that I missed this...but then I was one of the lucky few who actually made it into the one last year. I wonder if they'll do a 9/9/09 one? That'll fall on a Wednesday or something though.

Shit, they should just do a variation of this EVERY summer. But maybe that would get stale after a while. I dunno.

telepathy_rock!, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

1010 drummers in 2010.

(And on second look, I think those pictures were actually taken from across from where we were.)

I eat cannibals, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

Though if Ned took those shots, I think he was about ten feet to the left of us.

Hahah! Well, I did in fact take those shots I posted, so there you go. (xpost) Although as you say maybe opposite -- were you facing Eye at all?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

I just realized that the pics of the stage setup remind me of Close Encounters--they should do next year at Devil's Tower.

telepathy_rock!, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

BoaDrum was very original. I had never heard the Boredoms but the music was much prettier than I expected and I got a sense of sonic waves.

It is still above me but I can imagine why people get so into it.

felicity, Monday, 11 August 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

i am also going to murphy/mahoney/etc

i went to this and it was really poorly organized. the space was way too small for the number of ticketholders, thus packed crowds inside and long lines outside and not very much room to dance after 1am or so. the line was so long for the bar that it took over most of the dance floor. lincoln heights is a great area to hold a party like this, but next time they should take over a disused warehouse instead of a tiny studio.

get bent, Monday, 11 August 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

xpost, true about the size of the space, but i liked the small sweaty atmosphere. there are better venues, but the sets kept me there til the party was over

san frandisco, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

Marty, that was very interesting music

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Now that it’s all said and done and there’s been some distance, I listen way way way more to the rock band version of bore more than the sun cult drums and guitar wall version.

Canon in Deez (silby), Saturday, 13 March 2021 00:13 (four years ago)

That 77 Boadrum show was so intense live, it's hard to explain! The first time they all did the improve freakout I had to try really hard to hold it together just watching from the side.

Evan, Saturday, 13 March 2021 00:23 (four years ago)

several of my friends played the 88 L.A. one ... they had section leaders and there was definitely a, uh, diverse range of aptitudes represented. My friend whose husband played got to meet Kevin Haskins from Bauhaus so that was cool.
