All power to the revolution. Do your thing and get yours, nothing but love. One thing though. You know how a lot of you seem to think it's totally hilarious to use "crunk" in your genre tag? It's not. It makes you look like douches. Yours most sincerely,

J0hn D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

are you going to yell at the kids for playing on your lawn next?

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

I actually have a weakness for this kind of tag, it's specifically "crunk" that makes me go "shut up indie douchebags"

J0hn D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha "crunk" isn't that funny!!1! go back to prep school Muffy

J0hn D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

crunk, no, but sometimes the not-entirely-accurate tags appeal to something deep inside me. but usually not. I'm not sure what my criteria are.

Th3 M0unta1n G0ats are punk, not rock!

^^^was going to start a thread about this

omar little, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

worked out my criteria. saying "lol that kind of music is stupid we are above that let's say we're that" vs. other motives. i guess that was pretty obvious.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

shut up old man Que! these are the children and they're the future!

J0hn D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

there's a local band that I hated on for like 3 years on the basis of an interview full of scare-quote references to how like "get crunk" and "drop it like it's hot" and then finally saw them live and was like, OK, they're actually a good band, it doesn't matter.

some dude, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

xeni jardin? xpost

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

uh oh I'm having a fantasy, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

i keep meaning to put info on my myspace page, but i'm too lazy. and i never go on myspace except to listen to music. i feel like i've missed the boat. my only friend on myspace is pappawheelie.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

scott seward do you have a neopet

uh oh I'm having a fantasy, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

maybe I should think about getting a crunk change

Edward III, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

i like getting e-mails from facebook: "so and so says she used to do you, please confirm."

scott seward, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

the thing here is that crunk is a feeling, if someone says that's what they are you can't really argue.

some dude, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

i recently attended an event with a bunch of older upper-class liberal granola types, where the younger people thought it was really funny and cool to make tongue-in-cheek references to certain umm.. urban/hiphop culture expressions or w/e (think "bling", throwing one's hands up, etc) and couldn't believe there were people out there who still find this funny. that's all this is, except maybe these guys are less than 10 years behind in their chosen target terminology.

rockapads, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

Someone in my work went to see Jay-Z last night and so the first five minutes when everyone had come in was like a barrage of questions about the level of BLING and did the crowd look like GANGSTAS etc etc. I dunno, those are maybe reasonable talking points on one level but it never threatened to get out of snicker country

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 17 July 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

muriel spark is totally crunked out

myndbloom, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

So the term CRUNKS NOT DEAD is symbolic of combining PUNK ROCK with HIP HOP.
and in a larger sense, combing things that might not appear to go together.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Personally, the "Crunk" tags don't bother me as much as the "Christian Rock". Same witlessness, other direction.

bendy, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

Just as bad as all the kids in girl's jeans in 2001 saying "my nigga" all over the place. Things just stay the same, don't they.

burt_stanton, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

more, more old out-of-touch-with-this-very-edgy-humor old dudes for my army of old dudes

J0hn D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

The myspace tags are pretty silly in general. Kind of reminds me of Hotornot.com "This guy looks like a loser, but it says here he likes crunk too. Guess I'll match him."

myndbloom, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man the Crunks Not Dead label. The rappin' cowboy Sandman. Wow. Just listened to a few of his songs. Wow. ha

The monstrous keyboard player in the Shins still does this. His wacky between song banter is comprised almost entirely of saying things like "Yeaaah, dawg! COMPTON in the HOUSE!" and "Shinz is CRUNK, Yo!" and things like that. It's a nightmare.

Dear Music Reviewers Trying To Make A Name For Yourselves Reviewing Music,

Stop starting reviews with "When you go to [bullshit band's] MySpace page it says ["hilarious" fake genre]/["hilarious" fake genre]/["hilarious" fake genre]. But really, when you think about it, it's not too far off from the truth."

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 17 July 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

As an editor, I've deleted more of those ledes than serial commas.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 17 July 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT AGAINST SERIAL COMMAS? I'LL CUT YOU, FOR REAL

jaymc, Friday, 18 July 2008 05:53 (seventeen years ago)

Serial commas are the only thing keeping this world together.

burt_stanton, Friday, 18 July 2008 05:56 (seventeen years ago)

what have you got against serial, gay, awful, house, commas?

The Reverend, Friday, 18 July 2008 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

The next thing you know you'll be complaining about people saying they're 100 years old when they're, in fact, only sixteen.

I miss the days of pre-hype myspace when you could find Rivers Cuomo being emo on his little page and Hayden Panettiere was just this former Disney actress who liked to post camera-phone pictures of her slumber parties on a PUBLIC PAGE. Those young and innocent days...

Cunga, Friday, 18 July 2008 07:15 (seventeen years ago)

kogan?

Edward III, Friday, 18 July 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

back to talking about CRUNK because I'm too lazy to look for a more appropriate thread for a stupid anecdote: when I worked in a secondhand shop there was once a CD that came in called CRUNK FOR CHRIST

I ended up selling it to a ridiculously conservative Christian whose 'church' was founded by a member of the Righteous Brothers, apparently

salsa shark, Friday, 18 July 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

The monstrous keyboard player in the Shins still does this.

the same one who beat up his girlfriend?? i remember him!

stephen, Saturday, 19 July 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

Edward III, I know you were just making an off-handed reference, but I've known Frank Kogan for twenty years, never heard him utter a pervy word. For him and the other Rolling Teenpopsters to go on about all that stuff is no worse than any other subgenre or genre specialist conversation on ILX, and smarter than some.

dow, Saturday, 19 July 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

Smarter than lots, probably, but I don't read as many threads as I used to, so can't say for sure.(Hoping I'm not missing too many Tim Finney posts, or nabisco either, but seems like they aren't around so much any more...)
