there's a local band that I hated on for like 3 years on the basis of an interview full of scare-quote references to how like "get crunk" and "drop it like it's hot" and then finally saw them live and was like, OK, they're actually a good band, it doesn't matter.

i recently attended an event with a bunch of older upper-class liberal granola types, where the younger people thought it was really funny and cool to make tongue-in-cheek references to certain umm.. urban/hiphop culture expressions or w/e (think "bling", throwing one's hands up, etc) and couldn't believe there were people out there who still find this funny. that's all this is, except maybe these guys are less than 10 years behind in their chosen target terminology.

Someone in my work went to see Jay-Z last night and so the first five minutes when everyone had come in was like a barrage of questions about the level of BLING and did the crowd look like GANGSTAS etc etc. I dunno, those are maybe reasonable talking points on one level but it never threatened to get out of snicker country

Personally, the "Crunk" tags don't bother me as much as the "Christian Rock". Same witlessness, other direction.

The monstrous keyboard player in the Shins still does this. His wacky between song banter is comprised almost entirely of saying things like "Yeaaah, dawg! COMPTON in the HOUSE!" and "Shinz is CRUNK, Yo!" and things like that. It's a nightmare.

Edward III, I know you were just making an off-handed reference, but I've known Frank Kogan for twenty years, never heard him utter a pervy word. For him and the other Rolling Teenpopsters to go on about all that stuff is no worse than any other subgenre or genre specialist conversation on ILX, and smarter than some.

Smarter than lots, probably, but I don't read as many threads as I used to, so can't say for sure.(Hoping I'm not missing too many Tim Finney posts, or nabisco either, but seems like they aren't around so much any more...)
