So wait, you're asking if you should go for totally creepy reasons, but you won't go if it'll be a 'creepfest'?

Creepfests are ok

He doesn't want to be out creeped at the creepfest. Or out creped.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 17 July 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)
the album is pleasant but dull. the melodies seem a bit aimless; i can tell with they're going for, and they're close enough to be kind of satisfying, but they miss by a bit--just aren't well-constructed enough. her voice has a nice "grain" and she does some neat things with it but maybe too laid-back?
anyway just sayin'. can't find a thread on the SHE & HIM LP.

Biracial hotties! "Exotic" "immigrants" in places you'd never expect them!
― Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)
The first thread was, in retrospect, not the best idea I've ever had. I'm not sure why you've mentioned the second, though, unless you're another person who has a problem with the word "unlikely," in which case I think I explained myself pretty well on the thread. Or is the very topic of the thread somehow out of bounds? Because however inarticulately I may have expressed myself, I still think it's a pretty fascinating subject.
― jaymc, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)
xp I never used the word "exotic."
― jaymc, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)
I mean, suggest how I might've approached that subject differently. I don't think I was being any less sensitive than a PBS documentary would be about the same topic.

And yeah, I don't know that we would really get along, primarily because your taste in music fucking SUCKS! BIG TIME! stop being a frickin follower-boy ILM hiveminder and get one taste for chrissakes. try listening to some records made before the year 2000 once in a while. jesus.

Yes!
But no seriously, would you say the same thing about Matmos, Momus, or MtnGos or some other band you're "down with on the NET!"? No, because I think you are polite.
So be careful who you talk shit about because you could appear to be impolite (like me). Learn from my mistakes.
Steve Shasta
PS: Dude is a great musician and I'm deeply sorry that all that heavy-handed B&S pabulumic tripe that you listen to has made you a cloth-eared naif.
― Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 July 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)
btw Stormy Davis OTM
What are you even talking about? Oh wait, M. Ward? Haha, I didn't even realize you'd gone back to what this thread is about. I dunno, man: I've heard a few M. Ward songs and they didn't really do much for me, but I kind of like the She & Him record.
But that's sort of a weird comment to be making re politeness, because if everyone on ILM held their tongues about bands they didn't like, the board would be doomed. And your comparison to Matmos, Momus, and the Mountain Goats doesn't really hold up, because M. Ward doesn't post on ILM.
I like some Belle & Sebastian stuff but certainly not all of it and I wouldn't even say that they're a fair representation of the kind of music I like. Still, even if they were, I'm not too bothered: I get frustrated when people misconstrue my intentions (as with your calling me out on the immigrants thread), but I'm not so insecure that I'm going to care how you feel about the music I like.
― jaymc, Thursday, 17 July 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

I think the new She & Him single, "In the Sun" was made for people who found "1-2-3-4" by Feist too hard-edged and ominous. It has a nice arrangement and subtly diverting MOR melody though.

Never heard a note of hers, but I assume she was named after the JD Salinger book, "Frannie and Zooey"

I saw something in Mojo (or somesuch) where she lists her favourite music.
"Odessey and Oracle", and such like.
She has very similar tastes, it seems, as our Alice.
― Mark G, Monday, 7 June 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)
Her name was made famous by author J.D. Salinger, who wrote the classic Catcher in the Rye and the best-selling Franny and Zooey. But frisky young actress Zooey Deschanel is refreshingly defiant about how it’s pronounced. I told her I always thought it was Zooey as in “zoo.” Yet she pronounces the “oo” sound as in “oh.” Maybe we should ask Salinger, I suggested. Zooey wasn’t having any of that! “I don’t really care what Salinger says about my name,” she said. “It’s my name.”
Going to see this chick 2nite.
― jaymc, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)
Also, Slate suggests that Salinger's Zooey was meant to be pronounced like Zoe:http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/browbeat/archive/tags/zooey/default.aspx
― jaymc, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)
ok i looked up some talk show appearances on youtube and the hosts all said it like 'zoe' so i guess it was just people IRL saying it like 'zoo-ey' after all. go fig.

i apologise, zooey deschanel!
It's a shame that Ms. Deshanel can't sing on key to save her life.
― Darin, Monday, 7 June 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)
Saw She & Him in Cleveland last night. Good show, Zooey and M. Ward have lots of onstage chemistry and the audience obvs loves her. They've got a crack band with them too (Dan Horne, Louie Stephens, Aaron Sperske, who have been in bands like the Lilys and Beachwood Sparks). Don't know where this "can't sing on key" stuff comes from -- she came out and did a couple songs with openers Chapin Sisters, who also backed up her set, and she was fine. They did some fairly sophisticated 3-part harmony stuff and I never heard anything that made me cringe.
