I should I feel about recognizing that RW painting?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah - Marti Klarwein is the king of poorly painted hippie psych alb covers, surely! 'Live Evil' - wot a rec, wot a cov.

Andrew L, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

poorly? what mean? entire surface even covered: no patches or splotches = perfectly well painted!!

also where is mati klarwein's SINISTAH GIANT RED oKTARpUS eh? EH??

mark s, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(even = evenly)

mark s, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And he doesn't go over the lines when he colours the bits in, either. Some of us had to live through years of this kind of horrible cover, and I for one am not teribly keen to be reminded of Roger Dean or Gentle Giant.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh stop yr whining martin, TWO yrs if that and then 25 yrs w/o!!

mark s, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MARK, DIDN'T YOU HEAR ME ON ILE?! RUN AWAY!!!

jess, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, it didnt even dawn on me that this was a dean until right now. that either makes me very stupid or very sane.

jess, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i find these sleeves even weirder when the music isn't the expected prog rock - like Afro-rock (Osibisa had Roger Dean sleeves) or the second 20th Century Steel Band LP which has a scary strange flying pterodactyl skeleton.

actually i think the first Osibisa album may predate the Roger Dean Yes covers, so maybe these sleeves aren't a result of prog rock as assumed?

michael, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think it's fair to blame the africans for gentle giant.

jess, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At the Record and Tape Exchange they used to have Grade One recs (primo LPs to be put out at full price), Grade Two recs (common or garden mung that wld be flogged off at 2 quid in the bargain basements) and Grade Three recs (worthless horrors that were sold in 'sight unseen' job lots.) Ancient graffiti in the R+T staff toilets: "Gentle Giant rule Grade Two"! Since the great prog revival (??) this is prob. no longer true...

Andrew L, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the problem with philly used cd stores is that all common mung is sold at the same 6.99, despite contents. if that thing (not "octopus", the first album, and the start of all this nonsense with the pictures) has been 1.99 i would have bought it immediately, if only to have in the house to ward off vampires and zombies!

jess, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's true, Mark, that it was not a lot of years when these abominations were so pre-eminent, but they were very formative years for me, and therefore disproportionately traumatic.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Jello Biafra coined my favorite pejorative for this album cover style: "Fantaisy-poo". I think he was referring to his made-up prog rock band name, "Earth Fart".

But hey, how 'bout that Pedro Bell?

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

?brain salad surgery = frankenchrist?

mark s, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The song 'Think of me with kindness' on this album is lovely. Its a good example of why prog rock bands would have been much better if they had to try to do 3 minute pop songs.

Alexander Blair, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Earth Fart" was surely Jello Biafra's Invented Windham Hill-style new age band, yes? I am rather fond of roger dean also, I like the cover for "Badger" best (tho it is a crap album.)

The worst kind of mid to late 70s album sleeve is the kind churned out by the Hypgnosis (sp?) design house. These usually took the form of a stylised photograph attempting a tedious visual pun on whatever the album title was. Unfortunately I can't think of any examples but Mark S will know what I'm talking about.

This photo of melting ice (from an article on global warming) looks disconcertingly like a Roger Dean.

Corky McCoy (Miles's On The Corner, In Concert, Big Fun and Water Babies) is my favorite album cover artist of all time.

"The worst kind of mid to late 70s album sleeve is the kind churned out by the Hypgnosis (sp?) design house."

Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson of TG and Coil was an active part of the Hipgnosis team. While I tend to agree about their output - I'd actually prefer Dean - they did do a lot of the 'classic' Pink Floyd covers.

Not Roger Dean, but I'm interested in checking out 20th Century Steel Band.

Did that Avatar/James Cameron lawsuit ever get going?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 01:12 (eight years ago)

tbh one of my least favorite Deans because of the lack of back, fore or midground.
