Norwegian duo, doing a jazz-meets metal/noise act. I've been picking up their last couple albums, Metal Music Machine (yes, it's a Lou Reed reference) and Art Breaker.
Not going to make this into some quasi-intellectual "what is music?" debate, but I'd like your opinions if you've heard them (they have a meagre one song here: http://www.myspace.com/jazkamer), and your recommendations for this type of noise and noise rock.

I saw them at Colour Out Of Space last September. I remember liking them a lot. Uh. I'll make my way back to this thread sometime when I've got my head together and I don't have to be leaving so immediately.

I've got Metal Music Machine, which I'm pretty sure isn't entirely indicative of their general sound, being as it is a form of distilled black metal. I'm not a big noise fan (that is, if one takes noise to be Wolf Eyes and their ilk) but I can dig it.

Listening to MMM now. It's not bad; first track reminds me of Francisco Lopez's Untitled 104 but not nearly as complex. The second track is somewhere between Sunn O))) and Naked City's Leng T'Che. Not bad, but if this is some kind of overwhelming revelation to you, you haven't been paying attention...it's one of those records I can listen to and realize I already own, if not all the albums they're being influenced by, at least the major ones.

wait, did jazzkammer shorten their name, or is it a translation thing? love em live, haven't heard anything on record, or if i have, i've forgotten about it. 'distilled black metal' is pretty indicative of their sound, from what i remember! i should check out MMM, sounds fun.

I've got the Ground Fault CD. There's a track called Improvised Guitar for Chicken Diet Dish, but I can't remember how it sounds.

Jazkamer sure isn't the first band to apply an extreme-metal noise formula; as MMM's title suggests, Reed did it as far back as, what, 1975? (Regardless of whether he did it as a serious effort or as mockery.) Not sure if I agree with the Lopez comparison - the point with MMM seems to be boiling metal down to its bones, as MacDara suggested, rather than to play with sound-and-silence interaction. I especially like the title track, which removes any attempt at a melody or distinct instruments, and rather adds "layers" of sound to create progression. Again, it's been done - but I think Jazkamer does it well.
As for Art Breaker, I've had a lot of fun with this album. Broken into fifty-something tracks, it's largely a series of quick bursts of noise; but the weird thing is I find it very accessible. Read reviews and talked to friends who agree on the matter. It feels like a noise-pop record to me, with a very interesting catchiness which I find hard to pinpoint.
