"almost paradise" is the only one of these that didn't hit #1 or get nominated for an oscar.

jennifer warnes can be so schlocky. but i love her leonard cohen album.

i guess i vote "endless love" by default. i don't think i really like any of these. but they're embedded so deeply in my brain that i'm not sure it matters whether i like them or not.

time of my life seems the least lyrically creepy

i was in "jazz band" in high school (the only chance drummers got to play the trap set), and we played "almost paradise" for some reason. i think maybe some kids from the choir came and sang it with us. hoo boy.

has this particular mode of hyper-emotive balladic gloop just disappeared? i can't think of anything even in nashville in recent years that seems comparable.

Isn't this genre at least one of the parents of American Idol?

dad a, Friday, 25 July 2008 07:04 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah. that's where it went.

I thought this poll would include lots of songs featured in John Hughes movies (e.g., Pretty in Pink; Sixteen Candles; Breakfast Club).

OTOH, I didn't go to my HS prom, so what do I know? (Ans.: nothing.)

no it just struck me that there were all these (well, four) big ballad duets from movie soundtracks. they form a mini-genre of their own.

If John D. is out there, I want him to know that these all suck and I want them removed from the 80's immediately and put in another decade. Thank you.

Bimble, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

but they suck in a very era-specific way. the '80s wouldn't be the same without them.

My only concession is that I enjoyed Endless Love at the time. But for god's sake I was ten years old and sometimes that's just not good enough.

I DO NOT LIKE SAPPY BALLADRY DUET LOVE CRAP

no offense, but thanx

Peter Cetera & Amy Grant- “The Next Time I Fall” - should have been in a movie if it wasn't.

ILX System, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Yuck, "time of my life" is by far the worst of these.

Mark Rich@rdson, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:36 (seventeen years ago)

Wait a minute...what about "Islands In The Stream", Dolly Parton w/ Kenny Rogers? Written by the Bee Gees! Wow, I never knew that.

But it wasn't in a soundtrack, so it doesn't count in this thread, I guess.

Plus, possibly skewing a little old for prom night.
