The canon regards it as his finest post-Beatles work. Now let's see what the Ilxors have to say.

Great title track, but I am a sucker for "Blubird", really.

1900 and 85

"Band on the Run" is one of those rare classic-rock songs that I've heard a thousand times and still won't turn the station if it comes on the radio.

"Jet" has that fuckin' intro though.

And I used that piano riff from "1985" on a million station bumpers. Can I pick that one since it technically includes a "BotR" reprise at the end?

"Band on the Run" is one of those rare classic-rock songs that I've heard a thousand times and still won't turn the station if it comes on the radio.

TRUE DAT. It also benefits from its multi-part thing, where even if I'm not entirely in the mood to hear the main body of the song, I'm always in the mood to hear the "If I ever get out of here" part - plus there's just the whole Bohemian Rhapsody thing of getting psyched that the change is coming up.

That said, "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" has that piano line (so simple and SO GOOD) and a much more intelligible premise. Plus it's as close as McCartney ever gets to a kind of "hope I die before I get old" sentiment. Still - the wordless chorus, while giving good atmosphere, feels a little unfinished and the song never quite knows how to start back up after it.

Actually, right now the one I most want to hear is "No Words," which is basically a Denny Laine song...but that's where I think I'll place my vote.

btw next we need to do "Venus & Mars" or "London Town" please

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 26 July 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

The only good album my parents played to death when I was little.

Bluebird cannot be beaten.

xp oh yes London Town! Never ever got into Venus & Mars, despite trying.

Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 26 July 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

I went with "Let Me Roll It", for that riff.

So wait a minute. No "Helen Wheels" on the UK release? (Like DC said in the other thread?)

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 26 July 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

Just read the wikipedia entry. Not unusual, but still kinda weird.

It's like hearing that "My Wife" isn't on Who's Next or something.

I can kinda understand leaving off "The Song Is Over" off of whatever that thing is, but no "Won't Get Fooled Again"?

Any love for "Mrs Vanderbilt"? I've come to regard it as being a bit on the genial side, but when I first heard it, it was one of the standout tracks on the album - it's just kind of a weird song, and I love the way the melody of the "down in the jungle, livin' in a tent" part clips along.

"What's the use of worrying" indeed.

No "Helen Wheels" on the UK release?

Not until the remaster, no.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

How can I vote for "Fox on the Run?"

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for "Jet," of course.

I have to say I have never been much of a fan of "Jet". Cool Moog for certain, but I prefer McCartney when he does pop rather than when he does "rock". Plus the production on "Jet" is annoyingly muddy, as opposed to the clear sound on the rest of the "Band On The Run" album.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

ah, i like mrs. vandebilt
